Norton AntiVirus 2009 conflicts with ZoneAlarm Pro 7.0.483.000

I installed Norton AntiVirus 2009 on my Windows XP (SP3) machine.  I had previously set ZoneAlarm Pro so it would not load at start-up, to assure that it would not interfere with the installation of NA 2009.  When I was sure that NA was working correctly and had the latest updates, I started ZoneAlarm.  It came up but when I attempted to have it check for updates my PC locked up.  I had to remove the power cord to shut the machine down (the shutdown button would not work).  I tried reinstalling NA 2009 but it locked up near the end of the installation.  There is definately a conflict between these two programs.  NA 2008 worked perfectly with ZoneAlarm Pro.

Have you installed Norton 2009 product now? Or are you facing installation issue?

If you are facing an installation issue, can you get me the installer log from the following location?

 XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton Installer\Logs

Vista: C:\Program Data\Norton Installer\Logs

You can see a URL.txt inside the folder. Open URL.txt, You can see a string starting with http://errors.norton.com

Please copy the error string and paste here.

This is not an installation issue.  If I disable ZoneAlarm I can sucessfully install Norton AntiVirus 2009.  After installation I ran Live Update to make sure that I had the latest updates.  When I enable ZoneAlarm the system locks up.

Hi w8sdz,

To help us diagnose the issue, can you tell us which version of ZoneAlert Pro is on your system?

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi kev_mo

"ZoneAlert Pro"???   haven't heard of that one

Is that a file within ZoneAlarm Pro??

Version for ZoneAlarm Pro is stated in the subject line as "7.0.483.000"

I like learning, so what is ZoneAlert Pro??

Thanks

No offense but why didn't you just go with NIS 2009. Why buy 2 different products.
Real Time Protection = NIS 2009 + NATBehavior Analysis = ThreatfireOn Demand = MBAM

Interesting point, NIS 2009 isn't that much more to pay compared with just NAV, should be cheaper to by one NIS, than, buy NAV 2009 then go and buy ZoneAlarm Pro.
Maybe already had ZoneAlarm Pro for months before going out and buying NIS

Zone Alarm Pro $40

NAV $40

Total = 80

NIS Total = 69

Real Time Protection = NIS 2009 + NATBehavior Analysis = ThreatfireOn Demand = MBAM

Hi w8sdz,

ZoneAlarm Pro 7.0.483 has known compatability issues with NAV 2009. During the NAV 2009 install, you should be alerted that ZoneAlarm is not compatable with NAV 2009. Please see the screenshot below:

Re: Norton AntiVirus 2009 conflicts with ZoneAlarm Pro 7.0.483.000

w8sdz,

As a recently disgusted and expired Zone Alarm user and someone quite pleased with NIS 2009 and it's streamlined performance, I can tell you that simply having ZAP not start up when Windows starts is NOT sufficient to keep it entirely out of operation.  Even though the ZAP gui interface hasn't loaded, the anti-virus engine itself vsmon.exe is still there running to protect your machine and I don't think it's realistic to expect it to play that nicely with NIS2009.  Simply turning off a number of ZAP's components does not take vsmon.exe out of the picture.  NOTHING short of an uninstall will prevent ZAP from interfering with NAV09.

I could be wrong and there is a work-around that I'm not aware of but I highly recommend that you do a "clean" uninstall of ZAP.  Navigate to the uninstall icon in your ZAP folder on the Start Menu, right click on that icon and then select "Properties". In the target field, after the command for uninstall which is enclosed in quotes, add the command parameter "/clean" - without the quotes.  On the other hand, if you want to leave the path a little easier for reinstalling ZAP at a later time, just uninstall ZAP without the /clean option.

If you're worried about losing configuration information for ZAP that you aren't ready to abandon altogether, you can always go to the same tab in ZAP where you unchecked the load at startup box and BACKUP the ZAP settings to a safe location (a subfolder in My Documents perhaps).

Good Luck
