Norton AntiVirus blocking SuperAntiSpyware?

I've had Norton AntiVirus for over a year and haven't had a probelem, but recently, I think it started blocking the SuperAntiSpyware Update application. I've checked Norton's Norton Product Tamper Protection and it has been blocking SuperAntiSpyware.exe

For about a week when I turn on my computer, I'm greeted with an error message that says: "SuperAntiSpyware Update Application has encountered a problem and needs to close". At the same time, I also lose my internet connection, but the strange thing was that it wasn't the regular "Cannot display this webpage" screen. It was my internet providers page, with my modem's logo, "Motorola".
It had my user ID and password entered with a button that said "Connect". The URL for the page was my IP address. I've never seen a page like this before. (anyone else seen this page before?)

I unplug my modem and replug it and my internet connection is back and I can update SAS's definitions.

Also...(probably not connect to this but would still like an opionion) a few days ago I head some strange noises from my computer's spekers (that's happened when my computer's been infected with a virus before) I scanned with SAS and it found a Trojan.Agent/Gen-Faker[desc]

Scanned with Norton, and Malwarebytes as well and found nothing else except for some adware.tracking cookies.

But Today I heard the same noise again and scanned, this time in safe mode with all 3 programs and found nothing else. No sounds so far.

So I wanted to know what I should do with my Norton blocking SAS problem. Is it just a mistake or is there a reason why Norton's been blocking it?

And any advice for that trojan? Anything else I could do to try and see if my computer's really clean?

Re: Norton AntiVirus blocking SuperAntiSpyware?

Hi,

I just updated SAS and ran a quick scan without any problems.  Do you have the free or pro version?  If you are using the pro version you should disable the real time protection component.

Since you have had a problem with that trojan I can only recommend you sign up with one of the malware removal forums.  Pick just one and stick with them.

I have the free version of SAS.

Is these any way of unblocking SAS in Norton?

Re: Norton AntiVirus blocking SuperAntiSpyware?

Hi ZKent,

Norton Product Tamper Protection only blocks an outside program from accessing Norton's files and processes - it doesn't block the program from running or accessing the internet.  Some poorly written programs may crash if Norton access is denied but I have never heard of this happening with SAS - and there are probably millions of PCs with both Norton and SAS installed.  The Tamper Protection events are quite possibly coincidental and something else, perhaps the malware, is crashing SAS and your connectivity.

oh okay

I've been looking through the Norton Product Tamper Protection  history and it has also blocked several other programs including,

SERVICES.EXE

DRWTSN32.EXE

MSIEXEC.EXE

Is this normal?

I installed SAS (free) last month and no problems at all. Ran a quick scan yesterday with no problems.

Yes, this is normal.  The Tamper Protection logs record any attempt by an outside agent to access Norton processes, and such attempts are very common.  As in the case of the three processes you mention, the "actors" are almost always legitimate programs or Windows processes.

I've also uninstalled/reinstalled SAS to see if it was just a fluke, but the same thing continued to happen. But if no one seems to be having any problems with SAS and Norton, then it must be something else causing the problem.

any other good free anti spyware/malware software I could download and check my computer?

Thanks for the help :)

Your best option really is to sign up for assistance from one of the malware removal sites I posted above.  They offer a free service and will work with you one on one to make sure your system is completely clean.

Hi ZKent,

I agree with Krusty13 to have things checked out by one of the malware removal sites as the best way to check that you are safe.

In answer to your question, I would suggest MalwarebyesAnti-Malware (MBAM) Free it is excellent when used as an on demand scanner and does not conflict with Norton.  Please decline the free trail.
