Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

This happened over the last couple of days. When I opened a new Internet Explorer 8 browser,  it would open (took a long time) and a small window popped up with error message saying, "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close...". If I moved this winoow off to the side, the IE8 browser still worked fine. (Took me a whole day to narrow this problem down to Norton Antivirus updates interferes with IE8.) Here is what I did:

I completely uninstalled the Norton Antivirus program using the removal tool provided by Norton. I reset my IE8 browser. Everything worked fine after that without the error window. Then, I restalled Norton Antivirus again. Everything worked fine for most of the day. Then the same problem occurred again a few hours ago. At this point, I am pretty sure if was not interference from my other programs or I got viruses. I only use my browser to go to MSN, Yahoo sites, etc and check my emails. Also this exact same problem just occurred on my laptop with the same set up. This problem has to be caused by Norton Antivirus automatic updates. (Up until now, everything has been fine for years for my computers since I always use the proper virus/utilities protections and do routine scanning all the time.)

As I typed this message from a newer computer using IE10, I removed the Norton Antivirus once again from the older computer that is using IE8 on a Window XP, everything seemed to run fine again as it did the first time. I have not reinstall the Norton Antivirus yet!

Please help! Thanks!

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

Hi, Byron. Welcome. If you have a problem with an installed Norton product we normally suggest the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool, which is designed to clean up a damaged install.

It is a different tool than the Removal Tool you used.

http://www.norton.com/nrnr

If you use it, please read the Before you begin note and run Live Update after until no more are found, rebooting when required.

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

FE4,

Thank you for attempting to help. Let me restate my problem.

I do NOT have problem installing any program. The problem was that things were going fine and suddenly my Internet Explorer 8 began to display error everytime I open up a new browser as stated in my original post. I finally traced the problem to the Norton Anitvirus updates.

I uninstalled the Anitvirus program and reset my IE8, then reinstalled the Norton AntiVirus. Things were going fine for most of the day then the problem came back. I uninstall the Antivirus program again, then reinstalled it and also disable the Norton Browser helper on my IE8 browser, things have going fine for the last 10 hours without the popped up error message. I'll see if this took care of the problem tomorrow.

I have been using this same set up for more than 1 year now, i.e., Norton Antivirus with the IE 8, without any problem. The problem started a couple of days ago. Also, the exact same problem just started on my laptop computer this morning. So this is not an isolated instance.

I am hoping someone from Norton/Symantec will look at this problem/issue.

Thanks!

Byron

Hello BWong

Which Norton BHO did you disable.

Recent Norton updates to the way Vulnerabilty Protection is handled has Disabled Norton Vulnerabilty Protection BHO as NVP is not handled as a BHO but directly to the browser.

Norton Identity Protection should still be Enabled

Same problem here:
Running Norton Internet Security latest version with all the updates.
Windows XP all the updates, now is blocking Internet Explorer and Firefox. Forced to use chrome until is fixed.
I have an FTP Server and is also blocking all by listening Ports in all my server software. Disabling Norton Internet Security will not help at all. It feels like they completely replace winsock.dll with new corrupted one.
Removed Norton Internet Security and all the browsers work again (IE, Firefox & Chrome), but still blocked all listening ports on my PC.
Re-install Norton Internet Security  works OK until live update run the latest updates. It must be and update via liveupdate.

From what I see the person trying to help don't understand the details. I hope with this post helps so they can see and fix the problem.

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

Same problem. I am using windows XP and after recent auto updates Firefox and Internet explorer no longer work. They use 96% of the CPU and never open , I removed Norton using the removal tool and both browsers worked. I then reinstalled Norton and both browsers worked initially but after Nortton did it's automatic definitions download both browsers stopped working.

My only option now is to uninstall  and reinstall and set norton to stop auto updates and hope there will be fix. If there is no fix then I will cancell my subscription and find another anti virus.

Same problem with me with Norton Internet Security.

Old computer running Windows XP Home SP3 fully updated with Windows Update and Norton Internet Security 19.9.1.14

Switched on my computer this morning and Norton Internet Security and Internet Explorer both crash.

When I try to load Internet Explorer it comes up with "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close".

Event Viewer gives:-

Event ID: 1000

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 8.0.6001.18702, faulting module ipseng32.dll, version 14.0.0.431, fault address 0x0008c97a.

ipseng32.dll is a Norton file.

Norton Internet Security keeps crashing and the NIS icon disappears from the system tray.

Event Viewer gives:-

Event ID: 1000

Faulting application ccsvchst.exe, version 11.2.3.6, faulting module IDSxpx86.dll, version 14.0.0.431, fault address 0x00013cef.

Everything worked OK yesterday so I don't understand what has happened.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

Update 8-30-2014, 2:30pm California time.

Tentative conclusion: I am pretty sure the problem I described was caused by Norton updates.

Current status:

1. For my desktop with Window XP and Internet Explorer 8: (Problem started two days ago) After I reset the IE8 browser and deleted/reinstalled Norton Antivirus for the second time, everything has been fine for about 24 hours now. The difference between the second time and the first time was that I also disabled all Norton Antivirus browser helper on my IE8 browser. At this point, Norton Antivirus is running so presumably is protecting my computer. I stopped Norton Antivirus from doing any updates. The last update was done about 2 days ago before the problem occurred. I want to wait another day or so before I do the Norton update to see if things still work. I'll probably clone my drive/system the way it is now before I allow the Norton Update to simplify restoration. So far so good.

2. For my laptop with Window XP and Internet Explorer 8: (Problem started yesterday) After I reset the IE8 browser and deleted/reinstalled Norton Antivirus for the first time, everything has been fine for about 24 hours now and I also disabled all Norton browser helper on my IE8 browser as I did with my old desktop. Norton Antivirus is running so presumably is protecting my computer. I stopped Norton Antivirus from doing any updates. The last update was done about 1 days ago. I want to wait another day or so before I do the Norton update to see if things still work.

Based on the results and my investigation over the last three days, I think the problem seemed clearly created by Norton updates. The true test will come when I turn on the Norton update tomorrow. IF

a. The system/IE8 browser bombed, then it will clearly indicate that Norton updates created problem in the last 2/3 days and turning off the IE8 browser helper did not help. Norton need to issue correction/updates ASAP.

b. The system/IE8 browser runs, that means turning off the browser helper on Norton Antivirus fixed the problem. Norton still need to issue correction/updates.

Will provide more update tomorrow or so. Have a great long weekend.

Hi Byron

The problem is obviously the same with me with Norton Internet Security running under Windows XP.

There must be thousands of people still using Windows XP and running Norton, so surely Norton must issue a correction to fix this problem soon or they will lose a lot of customers.

Have a great weekend yourself.

To all users still having problems with their browser:

The ipseng32.dll file is the IPS Script Engine DLL for Symantec's Intrusion Detection.  As bjm_ noted in message # 4, Symantec started rolling out an updated protection engine on 27-Aug-2014 that removed/disabled the Norton Vulnerability Protection add-on for browsers (see Symantec employee miket's post here) but several problems were reported by Norton v. 21.5.0.19 (2014) users after that update - see M84's thread An intrusion attempt by locahost was blocked for one example.  I use NIS v. 20.5.0.28 (2013) and only received this update today, 30-Aug-2014.  If you received this protection engine update your NVP add-on should either be missing (Firefox) or disabled (IE).

According to miket's post here, a second Intrusion Prevention update was released via LiveUpdate to fix these problems late Friday 29-Aug-2014.

Has anyone run a manual LiveUpdate and re-booted their computer to see if the bug fix resolved their problem with IE?  If not, post back with your Windows OS, the type of Norton product you use (NAV, NIS or N360), Norton version number (which can be found at Support | About) and your default browser.  If you are not running the latest v. 21.5.0.19 it's possible Friday's bug fix hasn't been delivered to your system yet or actually created new and unexpected problems on some systems.

Hi, Byron and others. As Imacri says a fix is being progressively rolled out, but the reason I suggested the NRRT, is that it will clean up a possibly corrupted copy.

Patches apart, this is usually the best and quickest way to ensure a clean reinstall.

OS XP SP2 IE8 Firefox 28 No problems until manual Live Update today. I never use automatic update.

NIS 2013 ver. 20.5.0.28 Manually Live updated a few days ago.

I manually ran Live Update on 08/30/14 5:45 PM CST. Just before running Live Update I had been browsing.

Immediately after the Live Update I tried opening Firefox browser and it would not open.

It did not show on the applications list, but did show on the processes list and had high CPU usage.

I then tried Internet Explorer and that opened without any errors, but would not load any web page.

Stuck without a browser, so I couldn't even access Symantec online help.

I phoned Norton and they were of no help other than to suggest uninstalling Internet Security, or disabling the firewall.

Finally support acknowledged a known issue with XP after repeated questions of other reports.

First I uninstalled Firefox then re-installed it and it worked. I closed Firefox and when I tried it 1/2 hour later same problem.

I tried uninstalling IE and re-installing, but it would not re-install after finalizing and throwing out a bunch of errors.

I then uninstalled Norton Internet Security and both browsers worked properly again.

I re-installed NIS from disc (version 20.2.0.19) skipping the update before install,

and did not have the balls to download any other updates.

Both browsers still work and so far, no other known related issues.

What a humungous snafu !!!!!!

Should I ever trust Symantec again?

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

To all XP/IE8 users still having problems using their browser:

It looks to me like most users with this issue are also running older versions of Norton (i.e., v. 19.x, v. 20.x) or have unpatched versions of XP/IE8 or Firefox on their system.

I might be wrong, but I am not aware of any widespread problems with v. 21.5.0.19 on XP3 systems since the patch for the Intrusion Prevention engine was released late Friday on 29-Aug-2014.  I would suggest that users first try an upgrade to the latest v. 21.5.0.19 using the Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool as F4E advised in message # 2.  Just note that the NRnR tool will remove all Norton products like Norton Ghost and Norton Utilities off your system before it installs a fresh copy of your Norton product so please read the warning at the top of the instructions if you use other Norton products besides NAV/NIS/N360.  Be sure to follow the instructions and ensure that v. 21.5.0.19 is fully patched after the reinstall by running multiple manual LiveUpdates until it reports that no further updates are available and then re-boot your computer.  It might take several cycles of LiveUpdates and re-boots before your Norton product is fully patched.

If you don't want to upgrade to the latest v. 21.5.0.19, then please post back with your Windows OS (including service pack), the type of Norton product you use (NAV, NIS or N360), Norton version number (which can be found at Support | About) and your default browser as previously requested.  If last week's Intrusion Prevention engine update and subsequent patch have created further problems on XP SP3/IE8 systems running older versions of Norton this information will be helpful to Symantec employees.

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

The problem is not fixed - I'm still having the same problems on my home "server" running XP and NIS v. 21.5.0.19.

NIS first crashed a some days ago with an error message needed to close. Norton's recommended solution to the error message was to reinstall it using the NRnR tool, which I did.

A few days later NIS started crashing again and would only run for a few minutes. NIS would just vanish, sometimes after generating an error message saying it had to close.  I was no longer able to get access to the internet from this computer - unless running in Safe mode. I have continued manually running LiveUpdate over and over - some updates would install but it would always leave four patches uninstalled.

Hearing there was supposed to have been a bug fix I carried out another reinstall this morning using the NRnR tool. Internet access was OK with NIS removed and with the fresh new installation of NIS.

NIS was reporting that hadn't been updated for one day so I ran LiveUpdate and found there were 14 patches to install. NIS crashed again at the end of LiveUpdate but had, on restarting and running LiveUpdate again, appeared to have installed all 14 patches. It was happily installing all updates (ie it was up to date) but still refused to run for longer than a few minutes and would not run a scan (except in safe mode). Again there was no internet access, IE just hung and could only be stopped via Task Manager.

I have now reinstalled NIS again using NRnR and turned off automatic updates. I'm able to access the internet and NIS appears to be stable and will run scans without problems. The only problem I now have is that I can't keep NIS up to date. If the problem was fixed on Friday then it looks as though one of the latest patches has reintroduced the problems that the earlier bug was causing.

3. The NIS icon in the system tray keeps disappearing. If I then open NIS the icon reappears for a short while and then again disappears

4. When I run LiveUpdate
Checks for updates - Completed

NIS icon in system tray disappears

5. Have set Google Chrome as my default browser and it has made no difference

Hi retlaw:

Thanks for the information regarding XP and NIS v. 21.5.0.19.  I noticed a post here by sewing1234 in the thread titled Is NAV 2014 Incompatible with XP Pro SP3? which states the following:

"I'm told that a recent update is causing the problem and that engineering is working on a "fix". Friday evening I was told it would be 24 to 48 hours before the patch would appear via live update. Once the patch arrives it will be fun getting the update to install since NIS keeps crashing. I finally got all current updates to appear to be installed by rerunning live update between the crashes. Still no fix yet."

Unfortunately, I have no idea if the patch sewing1234 is referring to is the same patch described here by Symantec employee miket and it just hasn't been rolled out to all users yet (or if that Friday patch simply doesn't work with XP3), or if Symantec is actually working on a second patch over the weekend that hasn't been released yet.  Norton Customer Support might be able to clarify the status of these patches for the Intrusion Prevention (IPS) engine for XP3 if you'd like to contact them via Live Chat at www.norton.com/chat.

Per sewing1243's post here, has anyone tried temporariy disabling Browser Protection (Settings | Web | Browser Protection)?  This would not be a permanent solution if it works but might allow you to use your browser while you're waiting for an update on the status of the patch.

You would not be protected from drive-by downloads if you visited a malicious web page with Browser Protection disabled but other layers of Norton protection like Download Insight, SONAR realtime heuristic protection, etc. would still actively protect your computer.

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

Update: 8-31-2014, 3:00 pm, Pacific time

(My earlier update, 5 hours ago, disappeared while I was editing it.)

Current status: The Norton Update did not work. It actually made my problem a little worse.

Briefly:

(Continued from my prior posts...)

My computer has been running fine for more than 24 hours after I delete/reinstalled Norton Antivirus for the second time without updates. The last update performed was more than 3 days ago.

This morning, since things had been fine, so I decided to run/install the update. Right after the update, my IE8 Browser froze with a blank screen. (When this problem first appeared about 3 days ago, at least I could still use the IE8 Browser even with the Error Message window.) Then, I restarted my computer. After the computer restarted, a Norton AutoFix window popped open. It was running/searching for solution because the Norton Antivirus was not running properly. After about a couple of minutes of searching for solution, it reported failure. The error code was 8506,421. At this point, Norton Antivirus did not run/start even though it was running fine before I did the update. So I reverted back to my cloned drive. Hopefully Norton will fix this problem soon.

Conclusion: Norton updates that happened since 3 days ago until now had big problems. It caused IE8 on a Windows XP machine to freeze and also caused the Norton Antivirus program itself not to start/run normally.

I have Window XP, SP3 machines with Norton Antivirus version 21.5.0.19.

I'll provide more update if something new happens.

Hi BWong:

I'm not certain, but your AutoFix problem might also be related to the Norton Vulnerability Protection update per miket's post here.

One message that I have not seen reported is the "N360.exe Application Error, An attempt was made to execute and illegal instruction (0xc000001d) occurred in the application at location 0x6de43cef"

Otherwise, my situation matches what JohnuPing reports with respect to the offending modules.  I cannot get into the security suite to modify the browser protection setting, as recommended above.  The suite simply no longer responds.  I have also let the "Autofix" run for 45 minutes.  Autofix seems to be performing some I/O, but if it is using the browser for communication to Symantec, it may be a long wait.

I have Window XP, SP3 machines with Norton Security Suite version 21.5.0.19.  I recently downloaded 300 MB update, which I hoped might be the fix.  I rebooted the machine and checked the version, and the version had not changed (!??)  My default browser is Firefox 31.0.0.5310.

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

This is copy and pasted from the other forum that I posted in because it is regarding the exact same issues. Please see below

2004 year computer Windows XP SP3 all up to date on windows updates. Started receiving Ispeng32.dll errors after the recent Live Updates were installed on or around Aug. 29 to Aug. 30. 2014. Message indicates firefox.exe must close because of ispeng32.dll which is a norton file. I ended up eventually receiving IDSxpx86.dll errors in addition to those erros. A quick search determined ispeng32.dll to be norton related. I removed norton from Centurylink and when using the internet browser with firefox and ie8 the errors stopped. I did a fresh install of norton antivirus via. centurylink installer for norton antivirus and it was fine until I completely updated all the live updates and once doing so I was back to the original issue in addition to receiving notifications that now nav.exe has encountered an error. I determined the errors only happened when the most recent up to date version of norton was installed. This is happening on three computers and I have the same result with each; ie., if I remove norton it runs flawless.

Temporary Fix: I followed the suggestion of other members in this thread and completed a fresh install of Norton, then DISABLE Auto-LiveUpdates and did not complete any new LiveUpdates. Leave Browser Protection ENABLED as it should be and every other setting the same and thus far have not encountered the previous errors any of them mentioned for a few hours now of heavy internet use. I also completed a scan and no threats were found. For now this is a temporary fix and took me a couple days to figure this out but after a some internet searching it appears I am not the only one encountering this issue here. This is definitely a Norton issue related to Ispeng32.dll in my particular case on all three computers in addition to the IDSxpx86.dll and nav.exe errors seen previously but so far making these changes and NOT running the live updates at all and disabling auto updates seems to for the time being stop the annoying errors I was previously receiving. Hope this helps someone.

I imagine my norton definitions are certainly out of date but until there is a noteable fix this seems to be the only viable solution. Good Luck. There are two forums about this. Please correct me if I am wrong by posting this link but I have found two forums related to this same matter figured one might be helpful to the other or vice versa so here it is. Hopefully we can get some sort of an update from Norton asap without having to update to Windows 7 because that is not possible with the software I am running and will make some of the software obsolete which I cannot afford at this time. Hopefully this helps someone who needs it. I will vouch the above suggestion has worked for me so far going on day three and found this thread so tried it and it worked and it has been about 8 hours and working good.

Hi Sirjaded1:

If the information that Norton Customer Support gave to sewing2354 here is correct, this might not be a problem with Win XP per se but with the type of CPU (central processing unit) found in some older computers that would typically have Win XP installed.  If the CPU in your computer is the actual culprit then an upgrade to Vista or Win 7 might not solve the problem.

If I'm not mistaken, Sept 1st  is Labor Day in the U.S. so the long weekend holiday might delay an official response from Symantec.

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

I'll keep this short as others have already posted my exact problem.

System is XP SP3, clean and uncluttered, everything up to date.

Using the Comcast version of N360. Working fine until 8/29/14. On morning of 8/30/14, Firefox 30.0 failed to open and gave error. I was able to verify that I was at N360 version 21.1.0.18 prior to problem, and problem started after patch to 21.5.0.19. I have removed and reinsatlled the 21.1.0.18 and all is well. If I run live update, I get a bunch of updates and my version changes to 21.5.0.19 and my system breaks. The N360 service starts, then stops. It will restart if I start it via services console, or if I open up N360 application, but will soon stop again. At that point I can't do anything with N360, not even another live update. I have reverted back to 21.1.0.18 and am limiting my browsing to my wife's laptop.

Fed up with Norton, as I usually have to reinstall it every 12 months for some reason or another. Only use because Comcast gives it for free. Sure wish someone would have given me a heads up if they were going to crash my XP system.

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

If Norton is not testing the update that enables SSIE2 instructions (what ever that is) which is not supported by some older CPU's mostly found on Win XP systems then how about a product update announcement informing users before the fact.

Who is still using Win XP  April 8th

quote: Turns out, a lot of people. While estimates vary, XP consistently ranks as the second most popular operating system worldwide. Analytics firm StatCounter says that nearly 17 percent of desktop, tablet, and console users are on XP, while Net Marketshare puts the desktop use even higher at nearly 28 percent.

Maybe Norton is not aware that XP was a huge success in China, despite the country's issues with software piracy. According to StatCounter, some 44 percent of desktop, tablet, and console users are still running the operating system as of this month. It's the most popular OS in the country, even beating out Windows 7.

Maybe Norton is not aware StatCounter shows over 13 percent of U.S. computers, tablets, or consoles were still running Windows XP as of this month. end quote

Hi bjm_:

I suspect the Norton Customer Support rep meant to say SSE2, not SSIE2. I ran Piriform's free Speccy utility and the CPU section shows that my Intel Core2 Duo T5550 CPU supports SSE2 instructions.

I strongly agree with you that Symantec should have posted something in the Product Update Announcements board about this IPS engine update.  The fact that they released a patch on the Friday evening before a long weekend doesn't help matters either.

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

Thank you for those stats. I am a [very] small business user, and as much as I'd like to upgrade, it is difficult. I have something that works for what I do and changing over is going to cost me about $4,000 all said and done. I let the wife and kids have the latest and greatest stuff. I do plan to upgrade soon, but this is not the way I needed to do it. Besides, I remember my dad (who passed a couple of years ago) using an XP system, and I know that he didn't have an extra $600 bucks laying around to buy a new system and all the incidentals. He just wanted to play around on the web and balance his checkbook and know that he was protected. Thanks again for helping the XP users feel wanted.

I have Window XP, SP3 machines with Norton Security Suite version 21.5.0.19.  I recently downloaded 300 MB update, which I hoped might be the fix.  I rebooted the machine and checked the version, and the version had not changed (!??)

Hi mschilm:

Welcome to the Norton forum.

Thanks for letting us know you're using Comcast's Norton Security Suite (NSS), which is Comcast's own modified version of Norton 360 (N360).

If your virus definitions are out of date by more than 5 days or so, the Norton icon in your system tray should change from green check mark to a red "x" to show your system protection is at risk.  I'm guessing your AutoFix is trying to download a full virus definition set to update your virus definitions, and this full set is > 200 MB in size and might take some time to download.  Since these are virus definition updates, and not product updates, they do not change the version number of your product.

I don't know a great deal about Comcast's NSS, but according to the NSS support article here you can use the same Intelligent Updater as NAV/NIS/N360 users to update your virus definitions without using LiveUpdate.  If AutoFix keeps failing and you want to try this Intelligent Updater, just note that there are separate offline installers for 32-bit vs. 64-bit operating systems.  This Intelligent Updater will only update your traditional file-based antivirus definitons used for system scans and will not update other network-based (IPS) and behaviour-based (heuristic) security updates listed here, since these last two updates can only be delivered via LiveUpdates.

Thank you, Imacri.  Actually, I had Live Update set to automatic, and I have never seen the red X, except perhaps months ago when I was on vacation -- Certainly not recently.  It is helpful to learn there may be other ways to perform updating, nevertheless.

My solution has been to jump ship.  Malwarebytes has been my go-to solution for troubleshooting friends' computers, and their real-time alternative is quite affordable.  AVG also gets high marks.  Malwarebytes is running without incident and found a few minor things that evidently got past Norton.

Best,

Michael

I also completed a scan and no threats were found. For now this is a temporary fix and took me a couple days to figure this out ...

Further to suggestions for a temporary workaround by Tainted, retlaw, Sirjaded1 and others, Ribeye has posted step-by-step instructions on how to perform a reinstall and disable automatic updates here in the thread Most Recent Updates Crash NIS.  These instructions should prevent the reinstalled NAV/NIS from downloading the 27-Aug-2014 protection update that still seems to be causing problems on some machines and might keep you up and running until Norton releases a bug fix.

There is growing evidence that this problem only occurs on machines with older hardware (older CPU microprocessors are still the most likely culprit) and not the Win XP OS itself, but we'll have to wait for a status update from Symantec to confirm.

I will admit I am running a different CPU as the original stopped working and so the CPUs were changed to all be the same. Everything in these computers have been changed. At this time they have "AMD Athlon XP 3000+"  which are all running at about 2.1 MHz. I ran CPU-ID and have show Core Speed 2174.51,  Multiplier x13, Bus Speed 167, Rated FSB 334.51 all +/- as system changes. In the Instructions I only see 'MMX(+), 3DNow(+), SSE." If what stated above is true then this could be the final issue and unless it's rewritten to support SSE than I will have no other choice then to switch to a alternative antivirus program. Thanks for your input guys.

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

Hello,

Another user with the same problem. Using XP SP3 and NIS 21.5.0.19. Computer is 10+ years old, and no I don't want to upgrade. CPU details according to Speccy is AMD Athlon XP Palomino Socket A, MMX(+), 3DNow (+), SSE.

Last Friday NIS just crashed after an update. Wasn't too bothered, but on reboot, NIS still kept crashing, lasting just a couple of minutes. It also took down IE8 (would start, but not load anything. Had to kill with task manager) and Firefox (most recent version - this lasted less than a second before crashing). Thought I might have a root kit, but MalwareBytes found nowt.

Anyway, another reboot, same sympton. So I did a System Restore to middle of last week ... everything working A-OK (once I managed to get to the NIS settings long enough to disable tamper protection, else System Restore fails).

Then NIS updates, and same problem re-occurs. So another System Restore, and it works, etc.

At least I have now found I am not unique. But there must be multi-1000's of non-computer savvy peeps out there who have no idea where to even start.

In a nut-shell .... FIX IT !!

Twas brillig, and slithy toves did ....

Hi Tainted:

One working theory is that older CPUs that do not support the SSE2 instruction set are the cause of the problem (see sewing1243's post here on information relayed to her by Symantec tech support), but I've noticed a few users like rowantree posting here that they have SSE2-compatible CPUs.

There are instructions in message # 30 on how to use Speccy to test if your CPU can process SSE2 instructions, but based on the article here your Pentium 4 processor should support SSE2.

Again, it would be greatly appreciated if someone from Symantec could post a status update in the forum or at least acknowledge that they are working on the problem.

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

After doing the NIS manual live update, I did not receive any error or fault messages (SSE2 fault) when trying to use IE8 or Firefox 28.

They just didn't function. Firefox didn't open and IE opened but was dead.

Some also reported Norton error messages. I didn't receive any from NIS either.

I received error messages only after trying to re-install IE8 during the finalizing.

Hi Tainted:

Could you clarify what you mean by "trying to re-install IE8 during the finalizing"?  Do you mean you only noticed problems with IE8 and Firefox after you re-started (closed and reopened) your browsers, or did you actually try to reinstall your IE8 browser?

Are you still having problems using IE8 and/or Firefox?  If so, disable the Browser Protection setting in NIS as described in message # 22 to see if that helps with either browser.

"Could you clarify what you mean by "trying to re-install IE8 during the finalizing"?"

After doing a routine manual live update that didn't require a restart  (I don't ever use auto update) I immediately tried opening Firefox 28 and noticed the issue. I then tried IE8 and had the similar issue.

Before contacting support and uninstalling the tainted NIS, I reinstalled Firefox (v26 from old file) and it worked OK the first time it was launched and I closed it after some use. I tried doing the re-install with IE8 and it would not install and reverted to the previous install after getting errors when finalizing the install. (Not sure if that issue was related in any way to NIS since I had not previously tried a re-install of IE8.)

After talking to support and before uninstalling NIS, Firefox did not open a second time.

I then uninstalled NIS using the uninstall link on the programs list, and saved my Norton settings. ( I did not use any other removal tool)

Re-installed from disc (skipping the update that is looked for before the install) and did not do any other live updates.

Both browsers worked again and no other known related issues.

So I am currently using an out of the box NIS 2013.

Hi Tainted:

The product update announcement Firefox 32 Support for Norton Toolbar states in part:

"Please note: We now only officially support Firefox 30.0 and above. Firefox 29 and older are no longer supported."

Norton only supports the three most recent versions of Firefox.  When FF33 is released on 14-Oct-2014 Norton will only support FF31, FF32 and FF33.

Here's what my NIS 2013 Norton Toolbar extension looks like in the latest Firefox 32:

I have a fully updated NIS v. 20.5.0.19 (2013) running with Firefox 32 and have no problems on my computer.  However, my 32-bit Vista computer has a slightly newer Intel Core2Duo CPU T5550 that is SSE2 compliant, which likely explains why it was not adversely affected by the 27-Aug-2014 update for the protection engine announced here.

It sounds like you tried to run an old FF26 installer without removing FF28 first.  If you go to Help | About Firefox and see that you still have FF28 it's because the installer tried to prevent a roll back to FF26 when it detected you already had a newer (and more secure) FF28 on your system.  I have no idea if the protection engine update of 27-Aug-2014 is solely responsible for all your past browser problems but your unsupported Firefox browser might explain some of the odd behaviour you've been seeing.

Hi Imacri,

First of all, I don't use the Norton toolbar or Indentity Safe in Firefox, so I am not to concerned about Norton support for Firefox.

I have used newer versions of Firefox in my other PCs.

This PC happened to have FF28, the last version before they ruined it with v29 to cater to moble devices.

I did uninstall FF28 before I installed FF26 (which is currently installed). The only reason that I installed FF26 was because it was the newest version of an offline install file that I had. Since the recent Norton LU took out my browsers, I could not install Firefox from the Mozilla website while I still had the tainted NIS installed. I had not yet determined what was at fault that caused the issue.

Finally, the manual Live Update that I ran Aug 30th in my opinion was solely responsible for taking out my browsers.

No problems ("odd behavior") browsing for a decade before the LU and the problems started immediately after the LU.

I re-installed NIS without any LU and no problems since.

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

Dear BWong,

You are not alone on this issue.  Many people including my mother is suffering this problem.  What the problem is Norton released a update last week that caused Norton Internet Security as well as probably some other Norton products with antivirus/internet security to have some problems with older PCs' with older CPUs'/Processors'.  I had the same kinda issue on my father's PC (who is now deceased) with Turbo Tax.  Turbo Tax wouldn't run on his PC cause it was a older PC with an older CPU/Processor.  They released a update for Turbo Tax that fixed that problem of course with them I had to call to find out what was going on first and then where to get the fix.  Once I installed the fix Turbo Tax worked fine on his PC.  Both my mother and father's PCs' are using Socket 462 Processors'.  This is why Turbo Tax wouldn't run on my dad's PC and this is why Norton Internet Security won't run right on my mother's PC.  Until the patch is released Norton Internet Security and other Norton products with antivirus/internet security will NOT run right on older PCs' with older Processors'.  Newer PCs' with newer Processors' seem NOT to be affected by this issue.  My PC I'm using a AM3+ Processor and not having any issues with my Norton Internet Security and my Norton Internet Security is the same as what my mother is using.  This issue seems to be only affecting older PCs' with older Processors'.  I have been talking to Norton through phone and chat about it and this is how I know so much about what's going on.  I also know there is no estimated time it will be fixed, but when I asked the guy to maybe take a guess he said maybe a week or two.  I know they said 24 to 48 hours, but something this complicated looks like it would take a while to fix.  I'm sorry for your frustration as well as everyone else out there.  My mother including.  Let's just pray it gets fixed soon.  The fix I was told will be released via Live Update and Intelligent Updater.  I have found a few secrets playing around with the Norton glitch as well as Firefox (Note: This may not work for everybody).  I noticed on my mothers PC if I open her Norton and it actual crashes with an error and just doesn't close with out the error if I don't click close Norton continues to run as long as you don't click close.  I was able to do a Live Update and a successful one by doing this as long as I didn't click close to the Norton error the Live Update continued to run and complete!?!?!?!  Now if it closes without warning or error then I had to try and open Norton all over again and try again until I got the error finally and was able to complete the update.  This was only with the latest Norton Internet Security 2014 older versions you probably won't be able to do this as before 2014 we had 2011 and once it closed it closed and couldn't be reopened without resetting the computer, but 2014 seems to come back up over and over as long as you keep clicking the icon on the desktop.  As far as Firefox I noticed if I received an error when starting it as long as I didn't click close it would allow me on the internet, but with Norton not running I was unsure if I was protected or not so I just totally disconnected my mother from the internet till the fix is released cause why take a chance of getting a virus or spyware!?  I hope this helps alot of people out there as well as you.  O yea the Firefox issue has to deal with the Norton issue.  Reason Firefox crashes is cause it's trying to find the Norton Intrusion Prevention Add-On for Norton, but when Norton's not running it can't find it so it crashes Firefox.  This may also be affecting Internet Explorer as well.

Re: Norton antivirus update interferes with Internet Explorer 8 on window XP (new issue?)

Chipmunkk0405 and others,

The temporary work around as most of you had discovered was to unintall then reinstall Norton without live updates from about 8-28 on. Everything has been fine for the last few days for me. (I cloned 2 copies of my main drive to make sure I'll be fine for a while just in case.)  I do not visit exotic sites so I am kind of safe for now but there is another small wrinkle. Because I have not updated my Antivirus program, the program is giving/showingg me warnings for not keeping my virus definitions up-to-date. I just ignored it.

The frustrating part since I first reported the problem about 6 days ago was I haven't heard any official response or help from Norton. Most of the "troubleshooting/fixes" were done by the users/customers on this forum. Some of the suggestions were helpful while others were misleading, wrong, repetitive.

A few more days of silence like this, I will be incline to install other Antivirus software, some are free, and not worry about Norton. To me, it seems Norton should just issue a temporary fix(update) immediately that basically undid what they had done between 8-29 and 8-31 so all custoners can at least get their machines going, until they can come up with the final solution. Some(temporary) vulnerability to virus is still much better than not having a functioning computer. I bet a lot of customers that are not technically oriented or do not have the patience are having big problems with their machines and wasted a lot of time trying various things without knowing Norton was the one messing up their computers, not "protecting" them.

Morning all,

I'm having the same issues as all of you. Spoken on the phone with Norton this issue will be resolved in 24 hours or less which is what I've been told. I raised my concerns Friday and after spending 11 hours trying to resolve the issue I gave up. I was passed to the level 2 team at the time. They are well aware of the problem, however the speed in which they are addressing it is what concerns me.
