Norton Bootable Recovery Tool - Virus definitions not updating.

The Recovery tool says it's updating the virus definitions. It completes without errors, but when the scan starts the message "virus definitions current as of Sunday November 1, 2020" appears.

The network connections shows the wired connection is "active" at 1000/Mbs, and I am able to load google.com from the Opera browser.

I've tried this on two different computers both with their own ethernet direct connections to the router, and they both connect, but show "virus definitions current as of Sunday November 1, 2020".

I've burned the iso to a dvd, and also used rufus to create a usb boot, but still have virus update problem.

The internet works fine from windows 10 on both computers.

Have you manually done a LiveUpdate after the tool completed?

Re: Norton Bootable Recovery Tool - Virus definitions not updating.

Okay, I just ran the live update from windows 10, and it completed successfully.

To see if it would show that it really did update the first time, I ran it a second time, and it skipped ('not required') the protection and product updates that it had done the first time. So the virus updates (live update) seems to be working fine from Windows 10.

However, virus definitions still do not update from within the Norton Recovery Tools boot. They remain at November 1, 2020.

Learn more about virus definitions for Norton Bootable Recovery Tool

Norton Bootable Recovery Tool automatically downloads and updates the latest virus definitions from the Norton servers when you initiate the scan and connected to the internet. The latest virus definitions helps you secure your computer from the latest viruses and security threats.

If the virus definitions are out of date, Norton Bootable Recovery Tool may not detect and remove all the latest security threats from your computer.

If you use Static IP address to connect to the Internet, configure the IP address using the Network Manager to update the latest virus definitions. If you are using a proxy configuration or server you may not be able to connect to the internet.

Re: Norton Bootable Recovery Tool - Virus definitions not updating.

The Norton Bootable Recovery Tool, NBRT, starts its own OS environment on your computer. So the network connection has to be active within that environment. The OS on your computer, Win 10, is not involved at all. So running LiveUpdate in your Win 10 does nothing for the virus definitions in the NBRT environment.

Re: Norton Bootable Recovery Tool - Virus definitions not updating.

I am aware of this. In one of the replies I was asked if I had tried to do a LiveUpdate. I thought maybe they were suggesting, as a test of internet/update functionality, to see if the updating was working within windows 10. If it didn't work in windows 10, then that my have pointed to some problem outside the boot disc/usb boot media. But it updates fine in windows 10, and for some reason it doesn't update in the recovery tool boot.

Re: Norton Bootable Recovery Tool - Virus definitions not updating.

So if I have everything straight you do have virus updates in Windows current by manually using  LiveUpdate but updates in the recovery environment are only as of Nov 1 2020.

So maybe Norton only supplies a stock set of virus definitions for the recovery procedure that is maybe updated periodically? Doesn't seem to make sense to me. You did have network connectivity set when you ran the recovery tool boot?

Re: Norton Bootable Recovery Tool - Virus definitions not updating.

Before scanning, the booted Norton Recovery Tool does a virus definition update, but when the scan starts, there is a  comment that virus definition is current as of November 1, 2020.

Yes, after booting the recovery disc (or the usb), there is network connectivity (wired), and I can load google.com on the Opera browser.

Maybe employee @symc_Holt can add some clarity here???

Re: Norton Bootable Recovery Tool - Virus definitions not updating.

The rest of us can only guess. Here are my guesses:

1/ Bug in program that is reporting an incorrect date of Nov 1 2020

2/ Cloud based definitions used - no need for other update file if network connectivity is established

3/ Base file of virus definitions not being updated properly for the tool

There is a defect. Definitions are not being updated. We are working on a repair.
