Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

Hello.  Whenever I do a search or view a product on eBay, I get the "Fraudulent Web Page Blocked" screen, claiming that "this web page is a known fraudulent web page.  It is recommended that you do NOT visit this page".  The homepage of eBay is not affected, only searches and items.  Does anyone know why a perfectly safe site that I visited just last night is suddenly prompting this reaction from Norton?

Thanks.

I can also confirm this.  I can only guess that the web protection definitions are faulty, but im not sure since I havent searched ebay for anything for a while prior to today.  Hopefully it gets worked out.

Welcome.

What version of NIS are you running? Support - About.

What operating system and service pack do you have?

Have you manually run LiveUpdate, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available?

Is the search you mention the search provided by the eBay main page?

Does this message appear for all pages on eBay except the main page?

I just tried a couple of searches on eBay.com and did not get any warnings. Can you tell us what search phrase you used, so we can try it for you?

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

This is confirmed.  It must have been a recent update (today) as I buy and sell on ebay a great deal.  Ebay will need to be notified as well.  Home page appears just fine...leave it to look OR search at another category and Norton jumps on it.

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

I can confirm this too.  Just for anything for the ebay site (enter search item and click search) will trigger the warning.

Those of you having this problem....

Are you logged in to an account, or just visiting the page?

Are you on eBay .com or .ca or other?

I am not having this issue with my NIS 19.7.1.5

I am logged into my account on ebay.com, using IE, and the main page appears fine but trying to look up anything gives me the fraud page alert.

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

I just got off of the phone w/ebay customer service and they are starting to get a steady flow of calls pertaining to this situation.  My best guess is some sort of anomoly was issued in the latest automatic update that caused this.  Ebay indicated that they were "on it" and thanked for the input.

ebay.com

After logging into account, all is well until you leave the "homepage" and go to a (any) specific category.

I'd hat to be bidding on or buying something of value (boat, car, etc) and have this happen.

Hello Everyone!

I am having the exact same problem as well. It started around 11am (pacific time). Any advice is much appreciated.

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

I can replicate this on www.ebay.com.

On the site, enter a search term and click "search."  Wait for the page to fully load and Norton will kick in.

I was just on ebay about 40 minutes ago and all was fine.  Then it looks like my nortons updated about 25 minutes ago and now every time i click on an ebay item it says it is a fraudulent website....

Those that are logged in to an eBay acccount, try logging out and see if you have the same issue.

I do not have an account so I cannot test to see if it is affected by being logged in.

I just checked my NIS and ran LiveUpdate, so I am up to date, and still cannot duplicate this.

I just logged out of ebay. Then searched, page still comes up. I also logged back in and still the same fraudulent page..

I am logged out.  I can easily replicate it time and time again.

  1. Go to www.ebay.com (NOT www.ebay.ca or www.ebay.co.uk).  Wait for page to load.
  2. Enter a search term
  3. Click search.
  4. Wait for page to load.
  5. Norton will kick in.

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

This started around noon today for me. I can go to the home page, but after that I get the fraudulent site warning whether I am signed in or not. I buy and sell on ebay so this is significant to me. I get the warning when I click on any item, even items in my watch list. I have Internet Security 2012, updated 6 hours ago. Pat

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

Guys. Don't worry. I am sure that ebay will contact Norton or that Norton already knows and is working on the issue. I read about this and it did happen before. Guess this glitch is back again.... I have the same issue by the way. Hopefully Norton is working on this andd will give an automatic update that will fix this TODAY or Tomorrow. I hope.

Just exclude eBay sites you're using in your Norton product...

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

I have tried turning the computer off then on, logging out of eBay and logging back in, and still every search item, even including my own listings (!) is blocked as Fraudulent.  Is this being caused by an update Symantec did or by an update eBay just did?  Does anyone know?

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

This should have never happened, especially with a website such as eBay.  This is uncalled for for a company such as Norton to release an update that had a bug in that will effect so many people.  Come on, and this has happened before.  I shouldn't have to click continue to web page anyway.  At the longest, it should have taken them 10 minutes to have the problem fixed.  I expect more from Norton.

Kudos0

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

How do you over ride it? When I click on continue to website anyway, it still just taked me back to Norton.

Kudos0

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

You click on enter site anyway. This is bad for business. Still not fixed. How do you if the site is really not being phished or scammed. Millions of bank accounts could be affected.

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

It works for me. I can override it.

Do you honestly thing that Norton would have released something they knew would cause this trouble? It amazes me that things work half as well as they do, considering the infinite number of hardware and software combinations that software must work with. Add in the infinite number of web sites with differing methods of displaying information, and I do not know how any of this works.

As I noted above, I do not see this issue, and Norton's systems must be more like mine than those of you that are seeing this issue.

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

True. It could be. If it is--Then maybe people would be more understanding when something like this happens. People get upset over nothing. Slow down and enjoy life. Take a deep breath. It will get fixed. If there wasn't so many hackers in this world this stuff wouldn't be needed.

Kudos0

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

I'm not upset, I just want to override it...I sell on Ebay and need to do some work. No biggie but hopefully it will be fixed soon. I clicked on the "continue to website anyway" and it goes back to Ebay for about 3 seconds, then goes back to the Norton page. Is there something else I can do?

Kudos0

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

Norton come on. This is getting a bit stupid already. Ebay is a big deal. Money is on the line as we speak...

Kudos0

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

Don't really know much about it. All I know is I'm out of ebay too. Till they get it fixed. I don't want to keep overriding it incase it is something bad. Don't really know. But whoever (if someone did) attacked ebay they are causing problems for a lot of people.

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

I have the same issue, but what's worse is that in Firefox 13.0.1 if I click on "Continue to web page anyway" it takes me to http://www.symantec.com/redirects/norton/norton_com/co/viewanyway/ so I can't even bypass the message unless I use IE.

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

It is happening to me, too.  I agree that it must be due to an automatic update.  Seriously annoying.  You can, of course, still go to the pages, you just have to click go to the page anyway.  But is really a pain in the neck because it pops up EVERY time you change a page.  After a little research I found out that this has been happening since at least 2009.  Get a grip Norton.

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

I just experienced it, but I see the first post is from four hours ago.

We sell lots of our coins on eBay, which means we have no choice but to just deal with it until Norton fixes it. I get the message whenever I try to view a coin that I have listed.

If you have google chrome, open a incognito windo. Works fine, even when signed in to your Ebay account.

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

If anyone has some critical EBay transactions to perform and are getting slowed down by the "continue to site" button clicks, consider temporarily disabling some features involved in this behavior:

- Norton Internet Security: open the main UI and click the Settings link, go to the Web category and disable "Antiphishing".

- Norton 360: open the main UI and click the Settings tab, go to the Identity Protection category and disable "Antiphishing".

You product may show an "orange state" and there may be a "fix now" option that will turn this setting back on.

Please do this only as a temporary measure if you are affected by this issue and need to get some critical EBay work done; re-enable the setting as soon as possible to return to the recommended protection level.

Matt Powers

Norton Support said that the problem has been escalated to Engineering and a fix will be available in 24 hours via Live Update.

eBay is aware of the problem but asks users to contract Symantec.

Re: Norton Claims eBay Is A Fraudulent Website

I do not have a problem with following these instructions to do the work which I need to do on eBay. My problem is that I am an eBay seller and our entire business relies on our customers being able to reach our listings unimpeded. You can have all the workarounds in the world, but if a potential customer sees a fraud warning they will most likely take that at face value. Any roadblock between my customers and my listings WILL impact my bottom line.

I have no doubt that Norton is trying to resolve this problem, and I am somewhat reassured that it will be resolved "shortly", but can we get a better handle on what "shortly" actually means? Is this likely to be fixed in the next hour, next day, next week? Having some kind of estimate will enable me to take some kind of remedial action in the meantime. This is absolutely time sensitive as I have auction listings ending on eBay within the next 4-6 hours.

I am sure I am not the only ebay seller who is facing a potential loss as a result of this "glitch" and a loss of several hundred dollars to a small business is not small beer!
