Norton Confidential Toolbar for Firefox is incompatible with Firefox 5.0

I'm running Firefox 5.0 on Mac. And Norton Confidential version 1.3.14 (15).  I've run live update, but that didn't seem to help.

What's the fix to make the toolbar compatible?

Thanks, Vince.

There is no Firefox 5.0-compatible toolbar available yet. We'll announce in this forum when there is one.

Ok, thanks for the feedback!

I don't routinely monitor these forums, so is there  some other way to notify users when the updated toolbar will be available?

You should see something about it in your Live Update summary when it gets downloaded.  I can't think of any mechanism that's in place, offhand, sorry.

It would have been more impressive if Symantec had worked with the developers of Firefox 5.0 to have a toolbar ready before its release.

I certainly hope that this will not repeat when OS X Lion is released.  I am sure that Symantec will work closely with Apple to ensure that its product will be ready BEFORE Lion has been released.  I had abandoned Symantec before for this exact reason.  Please do not repeat the mistakes of the past.

Lee_G,

RE MacDevil's comments - something I hadn't thought of.  Thanks Mac!

is there any way you can find out if Symantec will have their major update available when Apple releases their new operating system in a few days? Who can we talk to about that?

This is a MAJOR concern!

Vince.

Vince,

Let's see if "Lee_G" responds.  If he doesn't than possibly they either A) Don't know the answer; or B) Knows the answer is "no, the product will not be compatible with Lion"; or C) Same as B, but their boss strongly suggested that they keep quiet about it.

It would seem that others have a concern as well.

In one of the posts, the "mac software" person at Symatec says that it is their policy not to divulge any information piror to the release of a new product.  If they were ready with a Lion compatible product, then I would think it would be better PR to say so.

One would think that Apple supplies beta versions of their OS for developers to work with to ensure that their products are as compatible as possible once they are released.  In fact, I would hope that those who develop anti-virus, firewall, and spyware protection software would be the first to get their hands on any such beta versions of the Mac OS.

Bear with me, I'm waiting for some further internal guidance here.  As mentioned previously, there are restrictions on what we can say about unannounced products, particularly as they relate to testing against products under NDA with other parties.  I'll just say that ignorance is not the issue, and hope to follow up with more info in the not-too-distant future.

Re: Norton Confidential Toolbar for Firefox is incompatible with Firefox 5.0

Hi Lee,

I have a windows 7 desktop computer that I have had the same issue with the norton toolbar and firefox 5. I worked yesterday with tech support for a couple hours and when I was done I still had no toolbar. We went thru all the updates and they removed and reinstalled both programs and still no toolbar. When I got off the phone, i discovered that my laptop aready the toolbar working with firefox 5. So it does work, but they didnt know what to do. I discovered that if you have an old version of firefox 4.0 or earlier with the toolbar and then run all the norton updates then install firefox 5 that the toolbar will work.

I tried to contact tech support but they didnt seem to want to know what i found so i thought I would put it out here so someone else could use what i found..

Wish they would have been a little more accepting of my idea. Just thanks for using norton is all they said.

Re: Norton Confidential Toolbar for Firefox is incompatible with Firefox 5.0

Thanks for the info.  Unfortunately it's not going to help for Mac users until the Mac product is updated. In our case it's a known incompatibility with Firefox 5 that the update order won't address.

I'm sorry you didn't get a better reception from Support, if you haven't already you may want to share your solution under the Windows forum, hopefully other users with the same problem may benefit.

Re: Norton Confidential Toolbar for Firefox is incompatible with Firefox 5.0

I would anticipate Norton NIS 4 for mac will have compatability issues with the initial release of osx 10.7 Lion. There are 30 outdated 'help scripts' from 10/27/07 that LiveUpdate has not brought current. These Power PC apps are listed once the system profiler opens after clicking the Apple icon on the top left bar; clicking 'about this mac', then 'more info'. Under 'contents' on the left, scroll down to software / applications then click. You will see these outdated Power PC apps listed on the right. Mac osx 10.7 Lion will no longer support Rosetta which allows Power PC apps to run on Intel machines. Until these 'help scripts' are updated, I would anticipate this would be the culprit of NIS 4 for mac not being compatible with osx Lion. I have contacted Norton support regarding this 1 month ago, & one rep commented these will be updated. As of today, they still have not been updated. Also, I too am growing impatient with the slow hotfix patch for Norton Confidential Phishing Protection toolbar for Firefox 5 on mac. This is rediculous.

FYI, Product Manager Mike Romo has made a statement about Lion support on this thread:
