Norton Confidential Toolbar no longer works with Safari 5.1

To Whom it May Concern:

I am running OS 10.6.8. The latest updates for Norton Security were completed this evening. ISSUE: The Norton Confidential phishing bar is no longer active while running Safari 5.1. I also noticed that after updating to Firefox 5.01 earlier this evening that the same issue was present with that application as well. After reading all the posts relative to Firefox 5.01, I understand that a fix is beng developed for that browser.

With that said, will you please provide me with some feedback regarding my issue with Safari 5.1. I do understand that Norton Confidential is incompatable with Safari 5.1 when running Lion OS 10.7.

Could the same issue have occured when I updated 10.6.7 to 10.6.8?

When have a moment, I would appreciate your advice on this issue.

Thanks for your attention.

Re: Norton Confidential Toolbar no longer works with Safari 5.1

As I read your comment, I freely admit, I may be missing the point, nothing new. You're running OS 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.  Now, you talk about your “ISSUE:   The Norton  Confidential phishing bar is no longer active while running Safari 5.1.” You also talk about Firefox 5.01.  You realize Firefox is also going through a major change. Are you saying the problem may be in the browser rather than the Operating System? This difference is not some major for the OS X 10.7 owners, but it is very important to the people who decided to wait on OS X 10.6.8 until this issue could be resolved. It also may give an insight to Symantec on the bigger issues.

Re: Norton Confidential Toolbar no longer works with Safari 5.1

Hi Gtumpy48 ~

Thanks for your quick response!

Sorry for any confusion! Let me give it another shot:

I am running Mac OS 10.6.8 which I updated/installed after it was made available on July 25th.

I also updated/installed Safari 5.1 after it was made available on July 20th.

So after installing Firefox 5.01 the other night, I noticed that the "phishing" toolbar for Norton Confidential had disappeared. Since I had had a similar problem when I installed Firefox 4.01 a month ago or so, I immediately searched the internet for any posts pertaining to this problem. Finding those posts, I realized that the folks at Symantec were developing a fix.

While I was in the process of dealing with the Firefox issue, I discovered that, when I switched back to using Safari 5.1, the "phishing" toolbar for Norton Confidential was not functioning there as well. I was surprised when I discovered this! Needless to say, I became very concerned, and I was unable to find any reference(s) to this ISSUE on the internet. So I posted the post that you kindly addressed. Thanks again for doing that!

Now, to respond to your inquiry:

I do not know what is causing the Norton Confidential/Mac OS10.6.8/Safari 5.1 ISSUE: the "phishing" toolbar's failure to function. The reason I say this is that I installed both the Safari 5.1 and the Mac OS10.6.8 update on the same day (July 26th). I had just returned from a trip to Alaska the previous day (Monday) and found that these updates were both available.

In the normal course of events, I would have done this differently. In other words, I would have updated Safari 5.1 on the 20th and OS 10.6.8 on the 25th. That way, it would have been possible to effectively troubleshoot this issue or at least have some clue as to its cause.

So, with that said, I am sorry to say that I have no reverence point from which to determine the cause of this problem. I have no idea whether it is the OS 10.6.8 or Safari 5.1 OR both in combination that has caused this problem.

Any ideas?

If not, I will contact Apple to see if they have heard about this situation. ...and if so, I will ask them if they have determined a fix.

Let me know what you think, and I'll take it from there.

Re: Norton Confidential Toolbar no longer works with Safari 5.1

Johnnb,

John, don't worry, I can get all confused just by myself, I don't need any help. Your input, to me, was very helpful. Let's try to get you some answers.

So you understand, let me explain something. I am primarily working with OS X 10.7 with Safari 5.1. So I can not verify everything I am saying to you right now. Sdnce you are using, OS X 10.6, Snow Leopard, I would suggest, first, go to “Finder/ Application/ Utilities”, make sure you find a folder named, “Java Preferences”. For the present version of “Norton Internet Security”, you need "Java" and make sure that JavaScript is checked. I have forgotten whether this function might be in "Safari/ Preferences". If you choose to upgrade to OS X 10.7, this will blow out the “Java”, which is a separate download. Then go to, “Finder/ Applications/ Utilities/ Java Preferences”. You want to check the “Java Script Box”. But you might be wiser to wait for the new upgrade because according to Symantec's technicians, we will not need, "Java” for the new version of “Norton Internet Security”.

In the final analysis, these are your choices and I will respect them. If you can learn from my mistakes, that will show your wisdom. Good luck, Sir.

Re: Norton Confidential Toolbar no longer works with Safari 5.1

Hi Grumpy!

Checked the  “Java Preferences” in Safari and made sure that the JavaScript(s) (found in “Finder/ Application/ Utilities”) were checked! Downloaded the latest Norton Security updates and found that the problem remains unsolved. Thanks for the "heads-up" and help. Much appreciated! My next step will be to contact the AppleCare folks and see what they have to say. I will let you know what I find out. Thanks again Grumpy!    johnb

Re: Norton Confidential Toolbar no longer works with Safari 5.1

Sorry for not chiming in sooner.  Safari 5.1 is not yet supported by NIS (this was mentioned in some of the threads about Lion compatibility).

Hi Lee!

So are you saying that Safari 5.1 is not compatible with OS 10.6.8?

Re: Norton Confidential Toolbar no longer works with Safari 5.1

No, I am saying that Norton Internet Security 4.1 is not compatible with Safari 5.1, so the AntiPhishing toolbar will not appear.  We are working on upgrading but I can't currently comment on availability.
