Norton Core configurable with a laptop?

While the FAQ for Norton Core states that a Smart Phone is required to d/l the apps to configure the Core - are there any thoughts on an firmware upgrade to allow a Wi-Fi laptop to configure the Norton Core. Thanks

Re: Norton Core configurable with a laptop?

From what my contacts have replied to a question I posed, there will not even be a way to log in using an Ethernet connection. So I doubt  there will be a wifi configuration option for PCs any time soon.

Thanks for the feedback, I guessed that was the case - seems like everything electronic is migrating to the smartphone platform.

I think this decision sucks. One would think that the most secure way to access the router for maintenance would be by a direct Ethernet connection. You have to physically be there to make any changes.

I agree - so anyone trolling the neighborhood - locally or transient - may be able to hack the configuration. For a smart company, Norton seems to have fumbled the pigskin on this one

True. But any secured router is going to have a non default password so the threat should be minimal.

Re: Norton Core configurable with a laptop?

If Norton Core is to be seriously considered an integral computing tool, its setup and configuration function must be controlled by a physically hardwired computer; not a Wi-Fi device. Wi-Fi devices come and go, but a real computer is where the real and tedious work is really performed.  I can't possibly consider this router device as a viable option until it can be controlled by an appropriate core computing computer (not a glorified telephone).

Just my 0.02cents. I was seriously considering buying Norton Core until I realized I couldn't configure it from my laptop. I have no intention of buying a smartphone anytime soon. Too bad Norton is cutting off a (I believe) large swath of consumers who care about security.

Re: Norton Core configurable with a laptop?

It would be nice to see an official Norton response on this thread. There was an official response on another thread (https://community.norton.com/en/comment/7304211#comment-7304211), but that was back in January. I'd love to know if this has changed. Besides the other issues raised here, I can't imagine having to browse through log entries on a phone. And the lack of web interface also answers my question about querying or configuring the router remotely, something I currently can do with my NetGear router.

My personal 2 cents: I don't have an iPhone or Android phone (I'm a Windows Phone holdout), so if Core requires one of these devices to configure the router, then I'm locked out of this product. Too bad, because I was seriously interested in upgrading to it.

Re: Norton Core configurable with a laptop?

I'm not sure what more you want another post from an employee to say. The decision was made to only have the Core device controlled by a mobile phone app. That has not changed.

Re: Norton Core configurable with a laptop?

I guess that's what I was looking for: Has it changed since the most recent official forum post back in January? Nope. So I'll keep my current router.

Re: Norton Core configurable with a laptop?

Norton Core:  This devices’ poor technical implementation development methodology, inadequate marketing strategy and its assumed insistence of going down this path of ignoring Norton’s longtime customer base reflects a new product development process that will cause loss of potential revenue for the company.  Corporate leaders usually don’t like the forfeiture of prospective real dollars.  Once this product hits the market there will be competitors with similar products that will chose a more appropriate and complete course of implementation that will encompass critical needs of established and tangible computing strategies.

Too bad; it was a good product idea with potential - not implemented well.

Re: Norton Core configurable with a laptop?

I would like to see the Norton Core App programming eventually be incorporated into the Norton Security (Premium) Software as part of the Security Block or Section. So the Security Block would contain the menu entries of "Norton Core", Scan, Liveupdate, History, and Advance.

The Norton Core App would still be in existence for tablets, smartphones, etc.

Just my 2-cents worth. (g)

Re: Norton Core configurable with a laptop?

Not sure it would be a good use of resources to code this functionality into the Norton Security line. The number of users of the Core device would be quite small compared to the number of customers using the Norton Security products.

Better they just allow Ethernet access to the interface on the device.

Re: Norton Core configurable with a laptop?

Good point.. But look on the other side of the coin. (g) Might be good PR work if the user, who did not have the Core package when choosing the "Norton Core" selection or icon in Norton Security, was instead sent to the Norton Website advertising "Norton Core". I would bet that Norton could reach more prospective buyers of "Norton Core" through Norton Security as via other types of advertising. Let's advertise the package by any means that we can.

Again, my 2-cents worth. (g)

Re: Norton Core configurable with a laptop?

I'm afraid it's going to have the Android version of Idiot lights. I just returned the BitDefender Box. That was one of the reasons why, an Android app with WAY too little info. People like me want to trust but VERIFY.

Re: Norton Core configurable with a laptop?

Norton is promoting the app for smart phones. I bet there is a web based to log into the router. Example; http://192.168.1.1. There is nothing that indicates otherwise.

JamesP

The setup instructions in the FAQs here, make no mention of a web interface.

Also, see the post from Norton Employee Gayathri_R  here.  https://community.norton.com/en/forums/norton-core-and-webbrowser-interface

There will be no web interface for now.

EDIT

I see you already saw Gayathri's post.
