Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

Having a problem with the Norton Core losing internet access to all wireless devices even though I have a strong signal from the router.  This is occurring every day or two requiring a restart of the router.  Cabled systems are not losing internet access.  I am using the Norton secure DNS setting but don't believe that is an issue since not having problems resolving addresses on the wired side.

Aside from wanting this issue resolved, I need to be able to access the router via computer since I need internet connectivity to restart the router using the Norton Core App.  For now I have to power cycle the router which is a pain, especially since I am unable to access it remotely.   If I am not a home when it fails, I cannot restart it remotely.

I need this resolved because we travel and have wireless systems that need 24/7 access.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

You can use your phone's cellular connection to restart your router with the Core App.   Just disconnect/turn off the wifi connection and use the cellular connection.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

As a add-on to MannyT's post. Core doesn't support "browser" access in its present form.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

I've attempted to use the cellular side with the wifi off and get an error.  I'm not recalling the specific error, but its a short message that indicates something "unknown or not available" yet the ethernet side is up and functional.  I wouldn't have a high level of concern if I could access it using cellular.  I upload weather imagery every minute and Wx station data ever 3 seconds so downtime I can't remotely reset is a serious problem.  I've been doing this for 12 years with low end equipment without any issues.

kit54 Update your app to version 1.27.2 and restart your smartphone. Recheck your connectivity. Let us know how that works out.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

  - iTunes App Store only has 1.27 posted which is the version I'm currently using.. I did delete and reinstall the app but it is still 1.27.  The firmware version is 171218_223

Where can I find 1.27.2 ??

I have been away from home, on cellular, on company wifi, irregardless the app will still report to me upon trying to restart the core the core can not be reached because it doesn't have internet access.  The only way I've ever been able to rectify is a physical power cycle of the Core itself.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

My experience is exactly the same.  Physical power cycle of the Core is the only thing that works.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

All: The app DOES work off site, I have personally tested it. That being said until Norton resolves this DNS issue a physical power reset will be the rule of the day. Waking this morning I found my app showing as "no connection" once again, with no access to the Core via wifi, cell data, nor Bluetooth. I'm seriously considering removing Core and falling back to the FIOS router until this mess is corrected. Sigh!!

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

Indeed it is for Andrioid, I don't see any new release notes for it nor the latest version for iOS either. iOS is still version 1.27 in the ITunes Store. Have you changed your DNS settings to ISP? Until Norton resolves this DNS issue a physical power reset will be the rule of the day unfortunately. Nothing we can do that will resolve it here.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

Yes, I've been back on my ISP's DNS for about 24 hours.  I agree Norton needs to resolve this fast.  I'm finding fewer reasons on the benefits on going with this router with the buggy firmware and limited app capabilities.  I know the intent of this product was to keep it simple for the average user, but so far they haven't found success and didn't realize we'd become involuntary beta testers.  I know various configurations across the user base may be bringing up new issues but folks tend to remove the barriers to keep malicious activity out to get their network back to a working state.  Not a good result from my experience.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

I started to look on here for a solution to this. None of my mobile devices will connect correctly. They connect but with No Internet and yet the desktop and laptops and surface pro are fine!  I'm not technical but not sure what else to try. I have powercycled, forget networks on devices. I am going to try App upgrade. What is even more weird is Norton Security shows that my current desktop is not protected and Ive downloaded the security software twice !

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

I am still having problems with internet dropping on my  wireless too, especially my cell phone. I don't use a laptop or tablet at home enough to tell if it's an issue across all wireless devices or just my phone.  So far just toggling wifi off and of on my phone has caused the connection to reset  so I haven't had to resort to power cycling the core.  It's not a DNS server issue, I have been using my ISP's DNS since the initial issues with that  before Christmas.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

Kbennett65 This issue with Core presently IS with cloud DNS. Although you are using your ISP domain name servers Core uses other cloud based services which connectivity to is the issue. Perform a DNS check here and see if your ISP shows in the results. https://www.dnsleaktest.com/

If selecting Core DNS and running the DNS test you will see Neustar returned as the domain servers being utilized NOT Norton. Just a heads up.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

I ran the DNS leak test again and confirmed that yes, all ISP connections point to my ISP's DNS . It's not a DNS issue this time, unless somehow my ISP DNS is also having a problem which would be decidedly strange.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

Sounds like possible interference.  Have you tried changing the wifi channel?

Change Norton Core network band settings

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

SendofJive, Not sure who you are addressing this to, but my wifi signal is strong and interference is not an issue.  I did have a marked improvement changing DNS back to my ISP and have changed it back to Norton's cloud DNS this morning. Waiting to see if the problem reappears.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

I have the same problem with wifi dropping out.  But another problem I try to go to a website and it never loads.  I check the wifi by trying another website and it is working.  The websites that don't load, just as soon as I turn off the wifi on my phone it loads right away.  I also use Pocketcast to download podcasts.  A problem started up where some podcast would not show up to be downloaded when I was connected to wifi but others would.  Now none will show up.

My solution to this problem is I disconnected my Core and put my old reliable router back in until Norton get the bugs out.  Can I plug the Core into my old router, turn the wifi off on the Core so the Core can get updates?

Have you tried changing to one of the other DNS servers besides the CORE DNS servers. There is also a suggestion by Gayathri

rlbeetle Just connect your Core to LAN port 1 on your router and setup in NAT-NAT mode. When firmware updates are released it should download them as it normally would.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

I have been experiencing similar issues:

  • I lose connectivity on devices connected via WiFi, e.g. mobile, PS4, Fire TV, etc. At these times, restarting the Norton Core - by unplugging & then plugging it back in - seems to be the only option. Even Norton Core app shows no connection when using WiFi!
  • Often connectivity is not available for specific websites or domains, e.g. www.schaumburglibrary.org, daily kos - the message I get is "Server not found". There are several other websites for which this happens as well. And it is not the ISPs problem. I'm able to connect to this via Ethernet connections connected to the Norton Core. On my mobile, as soon as I disconnect from WiFi and connection switches to my mobile carrier, I'm able to access the sites. Connection is refused even for the Wikipedia app!

I have the latest firmware version (171218_223) and Norton App version (1.27.2). I always make sure that all my software is up-to-date.

This is very frustrating. On my old router, a Linksys, there was no such issue. I'm really having a lot of bad experiences with my Norton Core (I was an early adopter and had preordered the Core, so have had it from the day it came out) and am seriously thinking about not renewing the Norton Core Plus security subscription.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

In a previous post I stated that I switched back to my old router because of the Wifi problems.  I was having the same type problems as user "Everybody" was having.  After reading some of the replies to my post I swapped back to the core last night.  So far I have not had any WiFi problems.  Maybe Norton did fix the problem.

Thanks

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

Yesterday WiFi worked without any problems.  Pocket Cast was bringing in new podcast and downloading them.  Today a different story.  Pocket Cast does not find any new podcast when on WiFi even when I manually search.  Switch WiFi off on my phone the new podcast come in.  Other than that the WiFi is working.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

rebeetle Change your DNS setting to ISP. Core will put the values in for your automatically and may reboot. The cloud issues with Core HAVE NOT been 100% resolved therefore I too see certain URL's as not even loading when on my smartphone as well. SPECIFICALLY news feeds with the Core DNS settings. Time will tell whether Norton gets this right or not.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

Hello rivers2

Have you changed the CORE DNS servers to your ISP DNS servers? Doing this may restart the Core. I would keep them at that setting until the CORE DNS servers can be stable for at least a month. The CORE can determine your ISP DNS servers on it's own.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

It's kind of a misnomer to say the Norton Core is working correctly when you have to disable functions and restart daily even using your local ISP.  Remember, this thread is about wireless connectivity issues but we still note that certain well known trusted websites get blocked on wired connections where it's necessary to restart the router to access them.

All the features one may have considered when making this choice are null and void if it's unreliable.

Re: Norton Core Dropping internet on wireless devices

kit54 Core firmware updated overnight to version 226. It specifically addresses the issues you are seeing.

Everyone: If you have not done so already, separate your wireless networks, name separate SSID's and separate passcodes for each. Restart the Core and move your gaming/streaming devices onto the 5.0 GHz network where you can then assign QOS as needed.
