Norton Core Questions

Hi all, just got a new Norton Core - I love the design but the limited settings are frustrating and I'd like to ask if anyone here could help me with this:

1) Wake on LAN for my server has stopped working. Previously, I'd bind the mac address to a specific IP and then set a port forwarding on the router. In the core, i have bound the IP and set port forwarding (internal and external port 9) but it does not work. Does anyone have experience with this

2) I don't intend to install Norton core / security on my devices. I found out after purchase that I'd have to pay every year to get access to Norton Core -  I'm not too sure about paying 120 a year to renew it. I'm curious if it will function fine after the license lapses - specifically, do basic security such as firewall work or does it drop every security measure it has. (to be clear, I don't need the DPI, Parental control, website blocking or other non standard security functions). I just want to make sure its not leaving the ports open

Any help would be appreciated

Re: Norton Core Questions

Hello CD99. Trying to answer #1 for you, when you said

Wake on LAN for my server has stopped working

Are you running an actual server ?

#2 - If the Core Security Plus subscription expires, your Core router will continue to functions as any other high speed router. Please refer to this article for specifics.

Cheers

Re: Norton Core Questions

Hello CD99

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum.

If you do  not renew the Norton Security plus license, then the Core will operate like a normal router. For the first 12 months, the license is free and you are allowed to install Norton Security on as many devices as you want. Devices where you can't install the program will still work like smart TV's and printers.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

Hey, thanks for the speedy reply - I'm running a custom NAS build and set it to sleep when idle. I could previously send a magic packet from a WOL software on my Windows machine to wake it up. I've reconfigured the software settings and set the settings on the Core but I can't get the NAS to wake up. The only change in this case is that I have replaced my modem-router with a Core (modem set to bridge mode with Core the primary router and wireless router). The NAS is on wired connection while the other PCs are via WiFi

Hey, thanks - just to confirm I understand your reply, there are no security issues with running it in normal router mode? Again, its more an understanding that the ports are not left open and that I still have access to basic functions of the router.

Re: Norton Core Questions

Hello CD

This is copied from the KB that SoulAsylum has mentioned.

f you don't renew the Norton Core Security Plus subscription after your complimentary term, Norton Core will continue to function as a high performance router. Because the subscription is integral to the router's security, all network, IoT, and device level security, plus parental control features will be unavailable if the subscription is not renewed.

Any further security would have to come from what ever security program you are using. I believe you mentioned that you don't intend to use the free Norton Security Plus security program now. I have been using Norton Security products for years before I got the Core.. From personal experience, I couldn't tell you how it would work without the Norton Security Plus program attached to it.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

Re: Norton Core Questions

The Norton Security Premium subscription is what ties Core to all the cloud based telemetry and protection services that keep the Core network, iOT devices and internal Core functions active. Not having an active subscription you will see Core function as a regular router, IE: Assigning DHCP IP addresses, Wifi will work. NONE of the built in protection features will function to protect the Core and devices attached to it. Packet inspection, stealth ports, UPnP, static IP assignments, parental controls, website categories, will not work. NAT transition I cannot speak for since I don't believe Core when functional with an active subscription will allow that outside packet due to the DPI settings. You can try to temp disable DPI and recheck.

Re: Norton Core Questions

Just adding on - does anyone know the solution to the first question? Has anyone set a Wake on Lan setting successfully on the Core?

Re: Norton Core Questions

I just created a port forwarding rule on my Core named WOL for a device, internal port 7 / 9 external. Core immediately deleted the rule. It appears Core will not allow WOL or anything related to VLAN across its subnets.

Re: Norton Core Questions

I just received a bill from Norton for Norton Security Premium ($3.32/mth) & Norton Core Security ($6.67/mth). Both Headings say they protect MS Windows, Mac OS, iOS, & Android. I purchased my Core directly from Norton directly while they were on backlog (For full price of over $300). They informed me that the security software provided through Core could be downloaded to all my devices (I get a Product Key for the Core). The Charge for Core says "Unlimited Licenses". The Charge for Security Premimum says for "Unlimited Licenses". I got on the "Computer Chat" with someone (?) from Norton who says the $6.67 is a monthly renewal charge for the Router (Which I paid full price for) and the $3.32 is a charge for Security Software (No Key noted) installed on my devices. I'm now not certain what Security the Core provides (I already have a Router I must use from U-Verse (AT&T)? I came to the Blog and Now read the Core is no longer being sold. Can some smarter person explain this to me.

Re: Norton Core Questions

Hello Michael. I have flagged your post as "escalate" to a moderator for review since it is a separate issue from the one the original thread poster has. Hopefully an admin will tag you here or send you a private message to assist with the billing issue. Your product key should be visible within your Norton account under subscriptions for Norton Core Security Plus subscription which IS for Core and the unlimited devices.

The Norton core security plus subscription is billed at the rate of 9.99 monthly AFTER the initial free 1 year subscription has expired and you renew it. Without that subscription Core will still function as any other high speed router will, but without most / all of its cloud protections.

As for Core being discontinued the OFFICIAL announcement has not been made as of this posting. An Admin has posted here with the information she can disseminate at the present time. Support end dates are stated in the admin posting.

Cheers

Re: Norton Core Questions

CD99. Do you have the "magic packet" enabled on your ethernet adapter in its properties? Note: I am on Windows 10 Pro x64 version 1809.

Edited: Also check your "shutdown wake on LAN" setting.
