Norton is crashing google chrome when intrusion prevention pops up

Whenever I open google chrome within minutes I get an Intrusion attempt error.  The IPS Alert Name is Fake App Attack: Misleading Application File Download 3 and that is what is crashing my google chrome.

Re: Norton is crashing google chrome when intrusion prevention pops up

I've been having the same problem since last night (December 31, 2013) and I tried several things. I tried using the Norton Power Eraser, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and deleting my temporary internet files with TCP. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Google Chrome, but nothing seems to work. Google chrome always seems to crash and then I get the same pop-up. Is it worth calling the Norton Live Expert service even if my computer is being attacked from another computer?

I have done everything you have as well any news on how to fix this?

I replied to another user having similar issues to you but using Firefox.  See   http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Norton-crashes-Firefox-when-Intrusion-Prevention-pops-up/m-p/1071877/highlight/true#M251389

Can you tell us what web sites you are trying to visit when this happens? Do not post live links as they could be infected?

I tried the same "fixes" as mentioned above.  Both Firefox and chrome crash after a few minutes of operation.  So far, explorer seems to work.  The norton note is the same as shown above.   I don't know what websites have been visited by my son since one of the first solutions was to delete browser history, cache, etc.

Re: Norton is crashing google chrome when intrusion prevention pops up

Hi everyone!

I was also having the exact same issue with both Firefox and Chrome and was able to resolve it by doing a System Restore to a previous time when my computer was working correctly. Hope that works for you all as well!

Re: Norton is crashing google chrome when intrusion prevention pops up

As silly, irresponsible and embarrassing as this will sound, my girlfriend was surprised when she heard that I hadn't seen the infamous "2 girls 1 cup" video and wanted to get my reaction out of it. I then proceeded to google it and click the first link. I'm guessing it was on the page for the video itself that caused it for me, because I started to have the problem right after that. Otherwise, I didn't browse or visit any sites that I don't normally go on (i.e. facebook, youtube, etc.). Seeing how another user is suggesting a system restore, I am considering it. acc

I also forgot to mention that I'm also experiencing the same problem on FireFox as well. I'll follow the other thread in case a solution is found over there.

Re: Norton is crashing google chrome when intrusion prevention pops up

If you take the System Restore route, be sure to uncheck Norton Tamper Protection, and then re-enable after the restore.

Normally we wouldn't recommend System Restore, as it can be a bit flaky at times.

Let's see if we can fix the problem, as System Restore is normally a last resort option.

Try running a Full Scan with Norton, and see what it finds. You could also try MalwareBytes Free as a passive scanner only, and see what IT finds.

If you are unable to resolve the problem, you could use one of the free malware removal sites, listed here by delphinium.

From Quad's comment in the other thread for Firefox here  http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Norton-crashes-Firefox-when-Intrusion-Prevention-pops-up/m-p/1071885/highlight/true#M251392   it would appear to be an infected file on your computer.

You should go to one of the sites F4E linked to for some free expert malware removal.

Re: Norton is crashing google chrome when intrusion prevention pops up

It would be helpful to users if Norton differentiated between an incoming intrusion and an outgoing connection attempt.  It is confusing to most users trying to read the file info to figure out what is happening.

It is not Norton shutting down (kill process)  Firefox or Chrome.

I'll try some of the links you sent me, but for example, I've already tried Malwarebytes, Avast and Spybots. I'll try another full scan with Norton, but if the problem still exists, I'll try a system restore. What do you mean when you say that it can be a bit "flaky" though? Is it bad?

Hi,

Continuing to do it yourself without knowing exactly what the results will be can create more problems than it solves. Please go to one of the free malware removal sites listed above and AFTER reading the directions for that site follow them and get the help you need. All of them are staffed by trained volunteers so be nice.

Re: Norton is crashing google chrome when intrusion prevention pops up

I have a solution, that worked for me at least. I've been able to use chrome for 40+ minutes now when I couldn't use it for longer than 5 minutes.

Downloaded adwcleaner from bleepingcomputer.com, ran, and scanned.

Look through the Folders, Files, Shortcuts, etc etc to make sure you're not deleting anything important.

Then click clean.

The PC will reboot and fixed.

Adwcleaner is one of the advanced tools used by the experts at malware removal sites. As you noted, you have to verify what you want the program to fix. If you are not sure of some fixes offered, you could make you could make your system unbootable.

This is why users should sign up at the malware removal sites and work with a removal expert.

Re: Norton is crashing google chrome when intrusion prevention pops up

I was having this same problem & I think i found the solution.

- First  I ran the Norton 360 Power Eraser, which deleted 3 of the main viruses. This process will restart your computer.

 - Next uninstall & reinstall Google Chrome. All your bookmarks & such are linked to your Google+ account so you dont need to worry about losing bookmarks & such.

- After I reinstalled it, google notified me of two seperate programs that are known to conflict with Google Chrome. One was called Vaudix & im not sure the name of the other but I know it has the word "Safe" in the name.

- They will be located In folders under C://Program Files (x86)/

- looking inside the folders there is usually an uninstall function that will not work & another file which is what your looking for.

- i took the most basic approach and deleted both folders & then completely deleted them from my computer by going in the Recycle Bin & deleting them from there as well.

- dont think you have to, but I restarted my computer after this process to make sure they wouldnt just download again once i opened up the browser.

Hope this works. Sorry no screenshots to contribute.

Well done and thank you SamuraiKatana - this worked for me, you're a star! A shame Norton failed to pick this up and respond to it a bit quicker, very disappointing.

PS I'm trying to post the quote from SamuraiKatana's post but smegging Norton forum control system won't let me and I keep getting a really irritating comment in red saying 'Please click Accept as Solution the post that best answers your question' ...I'd love to but I see no option anywhere that is accept as solution and I'd love to pointout to others stuck for hours trying to resolve this problem that SamuraiKatana has proved the solution. So anyone reading this goes to page 2 of this forum and read what SamuraiKatana posted. I worked for me.

Only the original poster in a thread can mark a post as the solution.

As you have not said what was removed, no comment can be made about Norton missing anything.

It may have been a PUP, which is a Possibly Unwanted Program. While they are annoying, they do not cause damage to your system. Some people actually want the 'Features' offered by these programs.

Norton products concentrate on malware that can damage your system, that is why PUPs are not detected.

Re: Norton is crashing google chrome when intrusion prevention pops up

From what I've been seeing, these systems that are affected already have the issue on board that is causing the browser crashes.  Most if not all of the systems have a ton of PUPs, browserhelpers, pc speed'em ups and all the junkware imaginable. Users really have to take some responsibility for what ends up on their machines.
