Norton disk optimizer defragments ssd drives

Hello all,

Some time ago i opened this topic here

https://community.norton.com/en/forums/norton-disk-optimizer-defragments...

As this has been closed here i come again this time with relevant proves.Unfortunately you have to be very careful as the disk optimizer really damages ssd by defragmenting  it.See screenshots.

Re: Norton disk optimizer defragments ssd drives

Looks like you were getting a trim with Windows defragger via the Norton utilities. Are you running the Norton utilities optimizer on a schedule? Why not just stop the Norton utilities if it is on a schedule? You do not need to defrag an SSD drive as their is virtually no benefit in read speed.

That being said, the Windows 10 defrag tool knows the difference between solid state drives and mechanical drives. Instead of automatically defragmenting an SSD, it instead uses the “TRIM” command, which is a specialized SSD optimization command, as well as some measure of fragmentation management, but nothing like the brute force defragmentation used on traditional hard drives.

Re: Norton disk optimizer defragments ssd drives

Your screenshot appears to show the Windows defrag dialogs as is shown in this article. Norton doesn't have anything to do with those settings. You can disable defrag within those settings and not worry about the SSD getting defraged. As was previously posted there was an issue with Windows 10 version 2004 causing retrim and defrag of SSD's. If you are still on that version that may be causing the issue. This article will assist you with how to permanently disable dfrag within Windows 10. Standard HD's don't need to be defragged either as you can manually check them at your own leisure.

Check the settings in your Norton product as shown in the screenshot below to disable disk optimization as well. Reboot the machine.

Re: Norton disk optimizer defragments ssd drives

Hello,

With all due respect SoulAsylum. But the defragmantation happens only when i start it from the Norton performance utilities. When i start it from the windows 10 HD tools menu it does the trim as it should. As to your statement Norton does not have anything to do with this - wrong , it does it the wrong way, so yes, disabling it from the automatic tasks is a good idea. By the way, i use windows 10 20H2 NOT 2004.

Re: Norton disk optimizer defragments ssd drives

Likewise with all due respect. Norton ONLY uses "calls" from Windows to perform the defragmentation processes, disabling it within Windows settings will stop that. I don't allow Windows nor Norton to defrag or optimize any of my machines, either with an SSD or standard HD as the boot drive. Disabling Windows settings WON'T prevent a manual launch from any utilities / aka 3rd party software installed on the system. Additionally, if your Norton settings are set NOT to perform it in the first place the run won't take place. I have multiple machines with SSD's on Windows 10 Pro 20H2, these are my settings, it works for me.  I'm glad you are interested in disabling it as well. SSD's aren't as expensive as they once were, the replacement and OS reinstalls can be. Thanks for the feedback as well.
