Norton extension for Chrome cannot communicate with Norton Security application

I'm running Windows 10 with Norton Security installed and the Norton Security extension for Chrome browser installed and enabled. Every once in a while, Norton displays this message in a new tab when I open Chrome:

"Error: The Norton extension for Chrome cannot communicate with the Norton Security application" with a link that says "Please contact support for help resolving this issue"

That link just takes me to a page with another link to a forum thread that has nothing to do with the error I'm having.

I've searched Norton Community for this error, but don't see any reports about it. Would appreciate Norton's help in resolving this, as it seems that my browser is not protected now. The standard Norton Security Windows app shows that my subscription is active and everything is green, i.e. I'm protected and the app is up to date.
