Norton Family Addon Can Easily Be Disabled in Firefox and Explorer

The Norton Family Addon can easily be disabled by my child in both Firefox and Explorer on my Windows 10 system running a local account. This makes Norton Family patently useless as an application to monitor a child if the child can just disable it at will. It's like building a top security prison and giving all the inmates keys.

I have been trying to find a solution with Norton for days and they cannot give me a solution. I have also found references to this issue being flagged 6 years ago so I cannot believe there is no solution for it after all this time.

It seems to me that this is some Windows Group Policy issue that Norton Family should sort out when installing. The Add On should obviously not be disabled or uninstalled at will on a local account for a child.

What solutions have those with an install similar to mine used for this issue please? I would really appreciate some help.

Re: Norton Family Addon Can Easily Be Disabled in Firefox and Explorer

Hi DonPisani,

Thank you for reaching out to us.
We have released a newer version of Norton Family(v3.7.3.55) which will provide second layer of protection to the child for Web Supervision feature. In the latest version, websites will get blocked even when the browser extension is disabled. Child will see browser specific Internet access block message instead of existing Norton Family block page for websites that are not allowed as per the house rules.

However, Browser extension is a prerequisite for the product to function completely and should not be removed or disabled. We always recommend to keep the browser extension enabled for complete protection.

You can upgrade to the latest version via Norton Family Portal(https://family.norton.com). Please also ensure to clear the browser cache after installing the new version.

Kindly reach out to us in case of further queries.

Thanks & Regards,
Bhargavi R

Re: Norton Family Addon Can Easily Be Disabled in Firefox and Explorer

Thank you for the update, Bhargavi R. I was just going to give up on Norton. The solution your helpdesk gave me was to ask my child not to disable the extension. I am sure we both would agree that is ridiculous. I might just as well as my child to behave online and not pay for Norton at all right?

So do I install the latest update on top of the existing Norton in Windows 10 or do I have to remove the existing installation first?

2. Select the child who uses the device.
3. Click on 'Add Device'.
4. Click on 'Add New Device'.
5. Download and install Norton Family App(NF_Installer.exe).

Re: Norton Family Addon Can Easily Be Disabled in Firefox and Explorer

I can confirm that this version (v3.7.3.55) works even when the Firefox addon is disabled.

Thank you Bhargavi R and Chandrakant who helped me install it.
