Norton Family blocking Minecraft resources

I have seen several threads here saying that Norton Family causes Minecraft to fail the download of resources, resulting in the game running with no sound.

When I run the game as admin, it loads and runs normally, but not when run as a standard user.

If Norton Family is uninstalled, it will run normally without admin.

(All the game, Norton Family and Java are fresh installs.)

Re: Norton Family blocking Minecraft resources

Did you post on the Minecraft site? Sounds like it's something that standard user and admin are run differently.

Re: Norton Family blocking Minecraft resources

I have the same problem when Norton Family is enabled on my kids account. Minecraft does not work with sound, it does not connect properly to the mojang page to display news etc, it seems to fail downloads. Upgraded to latest java. Only thing that solves this is to disable the kid from family. Something the family control does when enabled prevents proper minecraft operation but nothing shows up in the logs as beeing prevented. Have tried entering the various domains and hosts on permitted list, but that has not helped either.

Obviously my kids run as standard user. So Minecraft is not to blame here methinks.

Re: Norton Family blocking Minecraft resources

Hi

Can you please check the signer name for java.exe and javaw.exe on the PC for the game?

To check the signer, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to this path “C:\Program Files (x86)\Minecraft\runtime\jre-x64\1.8.0_25(or what you have) \bin\”.
  2. Locate java.exe and javaw.exe.
  3. Right click the java.exe and choose Properties.
  4. In the properties window, choose Digital Signatures tab.
  5. Click on Details button.
  6. Check whether the signer name  is “Oracle America, Inc.”

Thanks

For both Java and Javaw.exe it says Oracle America. Date is October 7 2014. Countersigned by Symantec.

Re: Norton Family blocking Minecraft resources

Oracle America, Inc. is indeed the signer.

A simple solution is to uninstall Norton Family on the PC, install Minecraft, then re-install Norton Family.

However, you may have to do this again when Minecraft updates, this is something that Norton needs to fix, as it is now confirmed to be an issue with Norton Family.

I have this issue too.  Is there any sort of fix coming soon?  Its been almost a month...

Re: Norton Family blocking Minecraft resources

We have the exact same issue.  When run as an administrator we have no problems with MINECRAFT, when run under a profile with Norton Family all sound is blocked. From the looks of this, it is definitely an issue with Norton Family....Do we have any update on a fix?

Re: Norton Family blocking Minecraft resources

I have just met this problem with the upgrade to Minecraft 1.9 (Windows 10 64-bit, Norton Family 3.5.0.43).

Both monitored accounts are unable to download Minecraft resources: the Minecraft launcher generates repeated errors about failing to download from resources.download.minecraft.net.

I temporarily disabled Norton Family, and then the Minecraft launcher ran as expected, downloading all the new resources.

Adding resources.download.minecraft.net to the list of websites that are allowed for the monitored accounts did not seem to be sufficient.

Re: Norton Family blocking Minecraft resources

Hi John,

Thanks for the information.  Do you happen to notice the exact URL that is indicated on the error message screen, just resources.download.minecraft.net?

Also, can you find any blocked URLs from Activity -> Web in your Norton Family online account related to this?

Thanks

Katie

Re: Norton Family blocking Minecraft resources

@KatieQ: Thanks for the really quick reply.

The first reported error is

[07:42:48 WARN]: Couldn't download http://resources.download.minecraft.net/8a/8a1c9994a6f35371b8e776b262f36... for job 'Resources'

There are then lots more URLs of that form (the hex numbers change, but the domain remains the same).

I can't see any blocked sites in the web activity page on my Norton Family account. In fact, if I copy and paste that URL directly into Chrome running as the monitored user, it downloads the file.

Re: Norton Family blocking Minecraft resources

Hi John,

I checked the domain resources.download.minecraft.net, which is not blocked by us.  We check website domain, not sub-domain, so it shouldn't be the reason that you can't download the program.

Can you please let me know what security product(s) you use on the PC, for example, Norton Security.

Thanks

Katie

Re: Norton Family blocking Minecraft resources

@KatieQ: Other than Norton Family, the security in use is the Windows defaults (Defender and Windows Firewall). If I temporarily disable Norton Family but leave everything else as normal, then the Minecraft launcher runs as normal.

Could Norton Family be blocking the Minecraft launcher executable from opening an IP address? If so, is there a way to "whitelist" this executable with Norton Family?

Re: Norton Family blocking Minecraft resources

Update: Just tried again this morning with a monitored user, and everything worked fine. I haven't changed anything at this end, so I'm assuming that something has been fixed with either Minecraft or Norton Family. Either way, we have happy Minecrafters in the house again!
