Norton Family Not Blocking Sites

Hi,

I have just installed Norton Family on two machines and trying to get it working.  One machine has worked successfully from the testing so far.  However the second machine will not block sites.

I have confirmed Windows Updates are up to date.

I have Uninstalled and Reinstalled the Norton Family Application.

I have attempted to add the site to the blocked sites list.  However the site is not blocked.  If I complete a search for "porn" the browser returns no results as expected.  However if you type the address of a known porn site say pornhub.com the site is not blocked and all content is displayed.

Norton Family Version 3.4.0.43

Norton Online Framework Version 6.5.0.14

Norton Online Datastore Version 6.5.0.14

Search Signature Version 3.4.0.43

Social Networking Signature Version 3.4.0.43

Windows Version 8.1 64 bit

Both Chrome Version 46.0.2490.71m which shows as the latest version and IE Version 11.0.9600.18053 Update Version 11.0.24 give the same results.

Please advise how this can be corrected.

Thanks

Kevin

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites

Hi Devin,

On the second machine, please let us know if you see a pop-up message at lower right hand corner saying you are being monitored after you log onto your PC as the child.

Do any other functions in the program work at all on the second machine?

Thanks

Katie

Yes the pop-up appears and says it is monitoring.

Safe search appears to be working as a "porn" search on Google returns no results.  I do not use the time limiting side of things.

An update on the issue:

The issue was corrected for the user.

The root cause for the issue was the internet set up was connected through proxy.  NF doesn’t block sites if the internet connected through proxy.  After the settings were changed, websites got blocked.

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites

That seems like a gross oversight of the product.  A child, and their laptop, might travel to numerous network locations and require a proxy connection.  As a parent, I expect the logging and monitoring of the device and the activity of the child to be captured REGARDLESS of what network infrastructure they find themselves in.

I think product development needs to go back to the brainstorming board and determine what they are trying to accomplish.  They are grossly missing the mark.  Some homes may even have a proxy server.  Not supporting various browser settings is unacceptable.

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites

Just a question for "The Wraith", We use Norton Family for Android Tablets and we also find that - without exactly knowing what adult content with explicit images means - that certain videos aren't blocked that are clearly not safe for children to use. Could it also have something to do with proxy or is it different for a tablet? Thanks

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites

"hey there",

Possibly, both.  Per Norton's documentation their product doesn't block sites when browsers are configured to connect to a proxy server.  Further, you have to use the tablet-specific browser in order for the product to function.  Even on Windows PCs, you have to have a 'supported browser' that has a plug-in for that browser.

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites

hey there,

Thanks for the post.  What you described it's probably not related to proxy.  Actually no one in US has reported to me with proxy issue. The original user in the thread is from a different country.

The program currently blocks forbidden websites (domains), but doesn’t block individual videos or images.  For now, please select the option “Use strict filter” for Google’s SafeSearch Filtering under “Search settings” link at Google page http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=en(link is external) to see if it helps.  If the child tries to click on the link to the website domain which is categorized as Pornography (or any one of the forbidden categories), the child would be blocked.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Thanks

Katie
