Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

I have the category "webmail" as well as specific web addresses such as "mail.google.com" and "accounts.google.com" set to be "blocked".  However, they are not being blocked on my child's PC (running Norton Family 3.0.0.61, Windows 8.1 and IE 11).  The worst part of it is that Norton Family notifies my via email every time that the "blocked site" was visited.  This gives a false sense of security!  I have tried uninstalling and re-installing Norton Family and updating house rules with no change.  Before uninstalling Norton Family, the alerts in the account stated a visit to a blocked site was attempted.  After re-installing the alerts changed to "restricted" site was visited.  I selected "block site" and saved it and it still I not being blocked and my child can visit the site.  I am also still receiving emails stating my child attempted to visit the specific "blocked" sites.  What is causing this issue and how can it be resolved?  I'm concerned what else is not being block that is supposed to be blocked.

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Hi darthdada,

Thanks for the post.  I tested it myself and was not able to reproduce it.  mail.google.com was blocked as it should.  I've reported this to the Norton Family team for further investigation.

Do other forbidden websites get blocked besides mail.google.com?

Thanks

Katie

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Katie,

Other sites on specific blocked list are successfully blocked (such as http://www.gmail.com) .  However, I noticed these are not "secure" websites (http).  The mail.google.com and accounts.google.com are "secure" websites (https).  Could there be an issue with Norton Family blocking secure websites?

Thanks.

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Katie,

When I manually enter the following web address to block (https://accounts.google.com and https://mail.google.com) all that is shown in the list of blocked websites is "accounts.google.com" and "mail.google.com" so it appears the issue may lie in the secure web address.  Does Norton Family automatically default to the http rather than https address and is this why it is not blocking secure website visits?

Thanks.

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Hi darthdada,

In the latest Norton Family 3.0.0.61, which you are on, we have addressed the secure web address issue, so it should work.  Our QA team as also tried to reproduce the issue with the same settings you have, but had no luck so far.

I'd like to have a remote session with you.  If you are interested, please send a private message (by clicking Inbox at upper right hand corner) for details.

Hi jrdeo,

Please let us know

1. What version of Norton Family you have

2. What operating system is running on the monitored device, Windows, and/or Android?

3. If it's happening to all websites, or the websites with https prefix?

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

1. I have the latest version of Norton Family (downloaded yesterday).

2. Windows 8

3. These are the websites I am trying to block: accounts.google.com, gmail.com, google.com/voice, mail.google.com, plus.google.com. Some of them have https prefix, but when we copy them into the sites to be blocked, the prefix are dropped. In the end, you can still access these websites...

Hi jrdeo & mommyabm,

Can you please let me know what browser(s) the child uses to be able to access the websites that are on the block list?  Or these pages load for a few seconds, then get blocked a little later?

Hi,

Can you please check if you have  Norton Internet security installed in the monitored machine.  If so, please check Norton Family browser plugins and IDsafe plugins are enabled.

To find Norton Family browser plugins: clicking Tools in browser -> Settings -> Extensions if the child uses Chrome.

Katie,

I am using Norton Security Suite v21.6.0.32, instead, and can't find any Norton Family plugins in it. Also, I am using Internet Explorer  v10.0.9, and chrome is not installed.

jrdeo,

Did you try to find the Norton Family add--on at Internet Explorer?   You can find it by clicking Tools ->  Manage Add-ons in IE if IE is being used.

Thanks

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Katie,

Below are the Norton add-ons I found in IE. They are all disabled. BUT none of them are Norton Family related.

Name: Norton Toolbar | Publisher: Symantec Corporation | Status: Disabled | Architecture:32-bit and 64-bit

Name: Norton Identity Protection | Publisher: Symantec Corporation | Status: Disabled | Architecture: 32-bit and 64-bit

Name: Norton Vulnerability Protection | Publisher: Symantec Corporation | Status: Disabled | Architecture: 32-bit

Name: Norton Family BHO (Browser Helper Object) | Publisher: Symantec Corporation | Status: Disabled | Architecture: 32-bit and 64-bit

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

jrdeo,

The last one you listed "Name: Norton Family BHO...." is the add-on for Norton Family.  Please enable it.

Thanks

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Katie,

I have enabled "Name: Norton Family BHO...." but we can still get thru Google related websites (i.e., google.com/voice for example). So it's still not blocking Google related websites.

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Hi jrdeo,

Can you please let us know if the blocking function works at all?  In other words, does the program block any websites at all (except the ones you listed)?

Do other functions work in the program at all (I am trying to know if you have Norton Family installed & configured correctly)?

Thanks

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Hi darthdada, mommyabm & jrdeo,

The Norton Family team has released a new patch for NF Win Client build 3.1.0.17.  The update has corrected the issue.  Please check it when you get a chance and let us know if the issue is resolved for you.

Thanks

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Katie,

I have removed my existing Norton Family client today, logged into the Norton Family website and downloaded/installed the latest version available there. I have verified that Norton Family BHO is still enabled in the IE manage Add-ons window. The About Norton Family window now says: Norton Family Version: 3.1.0.10; Norton Online Framework Version: 5.2.1.3; Norton Online Datastore Version: 5.2.1.3; Search Signature Version: 3.1.0.10; and Social Networking Signature Version 3.1.0.10.

Wasn't this latest NF client supposed to be version 3.1.0.17? IF so, how/where do I get it/install from? Also, another quick update. The following blocked URLs: accounts.google.com, facebook.com, gmail.com, google.com, instagram.com, mail.google.com, plus.google.com, and tumblr.com are being blocked only if you type them in the URL field directly, BUT if you do a google.com/voice search, or facebook, or plus.google.com, on BING, for example, then you can still access those websites, even though you have most of the Google related URLs blocked. It looks like if you do search these websites on a search engine, like BING, you can access them easily. Thanks for a all your help and patience. Please help us fix these problems.

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Hi jrdeo,

The latest version 3.1.0.17 is released to users via Automatic LiveUpdate.  You might have not received yet as the patch is sent to users in groups, not all at the same time.   When you get the latest version, please check again to see the existing issue is resolved or not and let us know.

Thanks

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Katie,

I confirmed we have 3.1.0.17 installed and I added a number of Google sites such as "accounts.google.com", "gmail.com" to specifically block and updated the "House Rules".  I confirmed in Windows 8.1, IE11 that the sites are NOT blocked on my child's computer.  I do receive an email that my child attempted to visit the page, which is not useful if the site is not being blocked!  This makes me wonder how many other sites Norton Family is not blocking out there.  It's obvious the issue in not with my child's computer and it is an issue with Norton Family.

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Hi,

Hope this is the right place to post.

I'm finding problems with some things being blocked and others not when I have that category blocked. For example;

try blocking the Lingerie category and as expected it does a reasonably effective job at blocking most of it however some seems to slip through...

Note that the rest of the Debenhams site is un-affected by the block which is in my opinion good.

Oh and try eBay?... I don't mind kids looking on there (i.e. shopping category) just as I don't mind them looking at other shopping sites so I don't want to have to block 'Shopping', but it won't filter the categories that I've selected like pornography, lingerie or mature content that is on sites like eBay.

Is there any fix for this?

Thanks,

Kirsty

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Hi Kristy,

For website http://www.marksandspencer.com, it's rated as Shopping, not Lingerie, Mature Content  as http://www.debenhams.com.  The Norton Family program categorizes websites by domain not sub-domain.  If a website is not rated correctly, you can dispute it if you don’t agree how it's rated.  Please check out the link below on how to do so:

Re: Norton Family Not Blocking Sites Supposed to be Blocked

Hi,
I have the same problem mentioned here.
I get notification saying a site is blocked e.g. wwww.facebook.com but actually it is not blocked on the device.
I have installed Norton Family App (just downloaded today 28/11 v. 3.1.1.26) on 3 devices:

Samsung TAB 3 SM-T311, Android 4.4.2, default browser - here it works.
Samsung Galaxy S Plus GT-I9001, Android 2.3.6, default browser - doesn't work.
Samsung Galaxy ACE GT-S5830i, Android 2.3.6, default browser - doesn't work.
