Norton Firewall block Windows Live Messenger

Hello,

I'm unable to sign in to windows live messenger(getting error: 80048820 or 80048416) just after installing Norton 360 v3.0.

And I'm sure that it is allowed to access to the Internet, I've tried to disable the Firewall but it didn't work.

Please help

Re: Norton Firewall block Windows Live Messenger

Micrsoft gives two potion to solve this:

1. http://messenger-support.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!8B3F39C76A8B853F!12862.entry

2. Check the date and time setup, if it's not the same as on the server, it could not log you in to the services

If these can't solve your issue, try this:

Stop the Norton 360 pocess. Open Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services. On the list find Norton 360, and click on Stop (left panel). It will stop all 360 processes. Now check how WLM works.
If you can log-in, close WLM and restart Norton 360 on the same wind by clicking on Start. Open the Norton 360 main window, go to Options -> Firewall Settings -> Program Rules. Delete the Windows Live Messenger entry. Save settings, and close 360. Now start WLM, and 360 should reconfigure it's firewall rules. If it still can't log-in, delete the program rule again, and add WLM manually to the list, and set everything to Allow.

If you can't log-in when Norton 360 is stopped too, then it's not a Norton-related error, somwthing else is causing the problem. Restart 360, and try to find out which running program can cause it (maybe a WLM reinstall can solve it...)

Let us know the results.

Re: Norton Firewall block Windows Live Messenger

Hi Nidhal,

Check the System date set in your computer(Control Panel > Date & Time) and make sure that it is set correctly. Then try to access Windows Live Messenger. If the problem persists, try the following steps:

1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. On the Advanced tab, uncheck Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart) under “Security” section.
4. Click OK.
5. Exit Internet Explorer.
6. Sign in to Windows Live Messenger again.

Let us know the results.
