Norton Firewall now blocking email and calendar (possibly others) after 4.1 Update

After installing the updates vai AutoUpdate I can no longer access my email or Calendar servers. Disabling Firewall (an undesirable step) addressed this but the issue did not exist prior to the update. Attempting to allow application and service connections ( which were not required before) had no effect. I'm currently obliged to run without Firewall in order to be able to work.

Is anyone else seeing this\have a solution?

Could you add some specifics - what does the log in Norton Firewall say?  A screen shot of the log would be a good starting place for more info.  ( Norton Firewall -> View history...) Logs...

Re: Norton Firewall now blocking email and calendar (possibly others) after 4.1 Update

I'm afraid there's very little information. No message is given by FW and the logs only indicate that CIFS and Windows File Sharing are\were previously blocked. Disabling FW cures the immediate problem.  Interestingly, the logs stop at 13:27 today, the time of the update, and nothing new seems to have been logged since when Firewall has been active.

Adding attachment as it wasn't preserved in the body of the last post. Extension changed from .tiff to .txt as this is apparently the only extension supported

Re: Norton Firewall now blocking email and calendar (possibly others) after 4.1 Update

Some addiitonal info that might prove helpful:

• I'm using a late 2009 MBP with OS 10.6.2. Safari and Messenger still work fine.  I'm using Eudora 6.2.1 on a POP/SSL server which is outside our corporate firewall. Calendar is Oracle and is also outside the corporate firewall. In both case, the applications indicate that they can't contact the server. I've tried to enable by all routes possible including trusted IP but to no avail. With FW enabled, Norton LiveUpdate still works as well.

It seems that something in the update has broken prior behaviour.

Let me know if you need any more info

Re: Norton Firewall now blocking email and calendar (possibly others) after 4.1 Update

Any fix for this? I have the same problem as Andrewcw. As of this morning when the update auto-downloaded, Eudora is blocked from checking any mail accounts when either 'connection blocking' or 'application blocking' (or both, obviously) are enabled in Norton firewall. I don't think I've made any changes to this since I installed it (other than updates etc) and have had no previous issues

Details are: iMac 2.8/OSX 10.58 on a home connection via a Netgear router with no changes to the firewall settings. Eudora is v6.24.

This only seems to be affecting Eudora - using Apple mail to check one of my accounts causes no hiccups.

Nothing in the logs at all to suggest Eudora has been blocked - very little logged at all in fact. I switched on logging for 'allowed' items briefly, and it quickly filled up, but again no mention of Eudora.

Any fix for this? As of lunchtime after an automatic live update and restart Entourage is unable to connect - get error -3211. Switching off the firewall solves the problem (not a permanent solution!).

Mac OS 10.5.8

Entourage 2004

via BT broadband - airport connection - no changes made

Can collect mail via Apple's Mail app

Carrot or chemdoc

We are trying to figure out this issue.  We know the problem goes away if you completely turn off the firewall.  Please run the following test if you can:

Make sure Application Blocking is off.

Go to Firewall ->Configure...

Click on the "action button" next to the question mark icon in the lower right hand corner and select "Advanced settings..."

Test having these setting off:

1. Turn off "Enable Application firewall" - wait about 5 seconds and try to connect. does the problem go away? - then hit Reset to Defaults

2. Turn off "Block outgoing suspicious and illegal IP addresses"  - wait about 5 seconds and try to connect. does the problem go away? - then hit Reset to Defaults

3. Turn off "Enable AutoSetup" - click "Save" - click "Done" - then turn "Connection Blocking" off.  wait about 5 seconds and turn "Connection Blocking" on.  wait about 5 seconds and try to connect.  Does the problem go away?

Do not forget after all these tests to go into "advanced settings..." and hit "Reset to Defaults"

Thanks

Re: Norton Firewall now blocking email and calendar (possibly others) after 4.1 Update

Thank you andrewcw, Carrot63, and chemdoc for your help.  We know what the problem is and are currently evaluating a fix for  it.

This occurs only for older( 2004, 2006) Macintosh applications which depend on the Code Fragment Manager to launch them.

Immediate work around for this problem:

1.  Go to Norton Firewall.app : Connection Blocking ( Configure... )

2.  Click on the action wheel in the lower left hand corner of the menu next to the question mark icon and select "Advanced Settings"

3.  Turn off "Enable applications firewall"

CFM ( Code Fragment Manager ) applications which access the internet will now work correctly.

Limitations caused by the work around:

The "Applications firewall" is a convenience feature and does not reduce security.  Your Mac is still protected.

With "Applications firewall" off you will not be able to write rules to the firewall which make exceptions to block or allow specific applications.

Re: Norton Firewall now blocking email and calendar (possibly others) after 4.1 Update

OK, thanks, thats a start. I take it when you refer to "Applications firewall" no longer working, you are referring to the "Application blocking" item in the main window of Firewall settings, and this should be set to Off in addition to "Advanced Settings" > "Enable applications firewall"?

Re: Norton Firewall now blocking email and calendar (possibly others) after 4.1 Update

Thanks for asking for the clarification.  Two part answer.

1.  Yes Application Blocking should be kept off ( default setting ) or else CFM applications which access the internet will be blocked.

2.  To clarify further, there is a difference between the "Application firewall" and "Application blocking".

"Application firewall" is more flexible and allows the user to insert into the firewall rules for a specific application, and even to add specific exceptions that to block a certain IP address.

For example, if you want to block almost all incoming connections, but only allow incoming connections to IncredibleOnlineGame.app except from IP xx.xx.xx.xx you can write a rule for that.   Rules for the Application firewall are displayed in the Connection Blocking -> Configure... Applications Tab in a simple to read format.  The convenience is that you don't have to know what ports IncredibleOnlineGame.app uses in order to write a rule for it.

Application Blocking is a feature which allows the user to completely restrict certain applications from using the internet at all. It is off by default.

Thanks for asking.

Re: Norton Firewall now blocking email and calendar (possibly others) after 4.1 Update

I have the same problem: my Entourage stopped working this morning though Mail and internet access work fine. But I don't have Norton Firewall so the work around doesn't work for me. I have Norton Antivirus 11.1. Can you tell me what I have to do?

Re: Norton Firewall now blocking email and calendar (possibly others) after 4.1 Update

I have a MacBook and am running Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and Entourage 2004. Norton Firewall started blocking Entourage this morning (11/21)  after the latest update was downloaded. Somehow I was able to figure out how to disable Firewall before I stumbled on this forum.

So: what is your timeline for a fix? Thanks

Re: Norton Firewall now blocking email and calendar (possibly others) after 4.1 Update

Took the weekend off and only just got back here. I was hoping Norton would have solved the problem over the weekend. My email is still blocked. My timeline is that I really want to use my email right now!

Can anyone help?

Re: Norton Firewall now blocking email and calendar (possibly others) after 4.1 Update

Dave -

I know how important it is to send/receive e-mail.  I can understand your frustration.

For right now we have found an immediate work-around that allows your e-mail program to work and still keeps your computer protected.

1.  Go to Norton Firewall.app : Firewall . Turn off Application Blocking ( This is off by default )

2.  Go to Norton Firewall.app : Connection Blocking ( Configure... )

3.  Click on the action wheel in the lower left hand corner of the dialog next to the question mark icon and select "Advanced Settings"

4.  Turn off "Enable applications firewall"

Then you should be able to send/receive e-mail.  For more explanation about what the "Applications firewall" does, please read the posts above.

Re: Norton Firewall now blocking email and calendar (possibly others) after 4.1 Update

Oops.  Sorry Dave  It pays for me to read a little more  before I write a reply.

You say that you only have NAV 11.1. ( not NIS ) and that it is blocking your Entourage email.  We have not heard of this previously.

Could you please try disabling "Auto-Protect"  (  Symantec logo in menu bar -> Norton AntiVirus -> Disable Auto-Protect ).

( You will have to authenticate ).

Does you e-mail work after that?

Thanks.

Terrific! Thank you so much. I didn't even know I had Norton Firewall.app on my system and couldn't find it previously. Now I have found it and followed your instructions and all is well.
