Norton Full System Scan not completing. Why???

3 times over the past few days I have attempted running a full system scan and neither time it completes. The first time my laptop froze so I had to shut it off and the second I got a blue screen message and my laptop shut down and upon starting up again it said "one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency". The check ran and my laptop started normally. Today, I tried a third time to run a full system scan when I went out, so I wasn't doing anything else on the laptop, I just left the scan running. I came home to my laptop restarted, so obviously the scan didn't complete for a third time. Why is this happening? Someone advised me to run Malwarebytes and I did, that scan completed and came up with Trojan.Hiloti which I deleted, ran the program again, then came up with nothing on my laptop...so why isn't this scan completing? It is also annoying because I have to wait hours for the scan to complete and it still doesn't.Message Edited by Ryan2009 on 08-04-2009 08:14 PMMessage Edited by Ryan2009 on 08-04-2009 08:33 PM

Ryan2009:

You may have a problem.

Please run a SysProt log for us so we can check your system for rootkit activity. You will need to disable Norton auto-protect while you run the scan.

Once it is downloaded to your desktop, right click on the SysProt icon, go to properties, and click unblock and apply.

Choose log, check all the boxes except show hidden objects only and scan.

You will be able to post the log here using the "add attachments" link just below the orange post button.

I will run that! But how do I disable the auto-protect? I'm not sure how to do that.

Okay nevermind, I believe I used it correctly. I looked in the log and it says No __________ found for every option.

Ryan2009:

We can't help you if we do not know what the problem is.  Did you find how to turn off auto protect?  Right click on the icon and choose disable.  If you did not do that, it will be necessary to run the scan again.

Do not check the "hidden objects only" box

We would also prefer to see the log ourselves, so please attach it as per the instructions once you have a scan that you are certain is done correctly.

When I right clicked the Norton icon, auto-protect was not an option...I had to go to the settings tab and turn it off there. Could that be a problem?

and okay here is what I got after running the scan

Ryan2009:

What other security software do you have on your machine now, and what software was on before you installed NIS/NAV.

If you had another product, or an older version of either Nis or NAV, how was it removed?

Re: Norton Full System Scan not completing. Why???

My laptop is pretty new, I bought it just last year, and I've only ever had Norton on it. Right now I have Norton, MalwareBytes's, and SysProt. But those were just installed within the past few days, the Norton wouldn't complete a scan before they were on my laptop...

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but, my touchpad broke so I took an old mouse I had and plugged it into my laptop, and before I did that I had no problems. After that I started getting the disc messages frequently and now I can't complete a Norton scan...that's the only thing I can think of that could have done something, if I don't have a virus or anything. I don't think I do, but I'm still not sure...

How did the touch pad break??

I have an older laptop with the touch pad turned off and use a mouse with  no problems...Mice are just plug and play so I don't think that would be a cause.

Ryan forgive me if it's been mentioned but what is your system, Norton version,Ram etc What version did it come with pre installed??

Also, see if a Hijackthis log will provide any insight.
