Norton ICON in Taskbar

The Norton icon on my taskbar is no longer showing the green check or yellow circle when I turn on my computer unless I click on it or click on the desktop icon------just a plain checkmark shows so I think it's not protecting me. Any ideas why this is happening?

Re: Norton ICON in Taskbar

Today the icon yellow color is gray, but the checkmark is green. It's usually black and gray for me and I have to click on it.

Re: Norton ICON in Taskbar

Other threads on this on issue of 22.17.2.46. Seems if you go to Settings, Anti-Virus, Boot Time Protection and set to Normal or Aggressive, may cure issue. I had set to Off and had same problem, set to Normal, issue solved.

Re: Norton ICON in Taskbar

It worked and when I did it 22-17-2-47 had been added. I don't remember ever changing it to OFF but  I guess things just sometimes happen. Thanks for your help. I put my setting to Normal too.

Re: Norton ICON in Taskbar

Please note, being forced to turn on an "Option" to get the progam to function properly is NOT a solution.

It is a workaround.

Norton should fix the bug problem.

There are potential downsides to using Boot Time Protection on some systems that is why it is an Option.

Re: Norton ICON in Taskbar

Hmmm. Off, Normal, Aggressive seem to make no behavioural difference on mine - reboot on each brings a grey icon which a few minutes later decides to go green. Confusing (and yes Fast Start is defo off) - I just let it all "settle" for a few mins now. And it often goes "red x" very very briefly just before green too.

And why (definitively) is BTP default OFF anyway? I'd have thought Normal might've been default? What issues does it cause? Should I put it back to Off? (Left it at Normal)

Any road, still grey icon, wait a few mins, green. Be nice to know when its "safe" to do work though. Reading the other thread on this am still none the wiser.

Re: Norton ICON in Taskbar

FWIW ~
Boot Time Protection is default Off because Norton cannot know every setup.  Norton cannot know what is optimal setting for every setup.  Norton cannot know what Norton might bump into on machine startup on every setup. User Norton experience and user setting Boot Time Protection has been discussed, before.
There was information posted years back that BTP is dynamic.   That even at default Off user is protected.  And Norton recommends Default for most users.
However >

Boot Time Protection increases security when you start your computer. A boot time scan is a virus scan that runs before the operating system fully loads. This allows Norton to scan files before they are used by another program or the operating system.

To fully protect your computer during start up, you must configure Boot Time Protection.

Maybe, BTP was before (or after - I forget) ELAM and I remember when Norton had an ELAM setting.
So, presumably BTP has evolved to current status... user adjusts BTP for what feels best on their setup.

Just saying.

Re: Norton ICON in Taskbar

BTP  at normal and aggressive settings can slow down the boot process on your system. Some users notice this difference and would prefer the quicker startup to the increase security.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton ICON in Taskbar

The times of each are much of a muchness whatever its set at + still wind up with a grey icon that eventually becomes green.

Default is OFF, just clicked on Use Defaults.

If Norton (or indeed any AV) is doing its job properly in real-time then why would you need BTP in the first place? Seems a bit odd.

Anyway, I'll take it it's paws off until it's green, whichever one you pick.
