Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

I am not happy about the inability of Norton to resolve this issue with Norton ID Safe and Google Chrome v32. I rely on ID Safe EVERYDAY. I have resorted to writing all my logins and passwords on a piece of paper and have to enter sites with keystrokes my passwords the old fashion way... ID Safe is such a fantastic product when it works properly. But I have never had to wait so long for a problem to be resolved with Norton. What is the deal here??? When will this problem be fixed??? Is this a nail in the coffin for Norton!

Hi ADM14, and welcome. I'm sorry you've had a frustrating time.

Symantec advised last month of the fact that they were working on a fix for this, but we have no time frame as yet.

Hopefully, soon !

Please have a read through this post by Bgriego with a work around you can use.

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

I used the back door method to get into ID Safe via NIS... still ID safe would not fill my log-in and did not appear at all. I have an old computer 2003... windows xp pro... It's not in the budget to get a new computer so I have to make this one work. I know I have until April when MS pulls the plug on XP. It is what it is. But I am beginning to think there is a larger more sinister issue at work here... that Norton and Google are oil and water.... I am reading everywhere on this forum... people with new better machines still having problems with Chrome and Norton so its not all my computer's issue here.

I might have to can chrome entirely and go back to unsupported ie8... not the solution I am looking for. What is Google doing to help remedy this problem with Nortone ID Safe?

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

Hi, ADM14. I stopped using Chrome because of the privacy concerns, and unwanted extensions being downloaded into Chrome.

However, I believe a lot of the problems have been attributed to Google's acceptance of third party extensions, in that they were said to be restricting them from being downloaded from the Google store, only.

Hence the problems with incompatibility, until Google sorts itself out.

So it seems as if one will be needing to choose to use either Chrome or Norton?

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

Not necessarily. Stick with Norton, and use a Chrome derivative like SR Iron if you want to retain a Chrome style browser.

Do you happen to know if  the Norton extension (for Chrome, I'd assume) works with that derivative browser?

Kind regards,

John

Hi, John. Last time I used SR Iron, the Google extensions DID work. That may have changed, given that Google has been moving the goal posts !....

"Hence the problems with incompatibility, until Google sorts itself out...".

 So, now I'm really confused.

If the issue is with Google, why would Tony Weiss post "our team is working hard to resolve this issue quickly?"

Another round of finger pointing that is ultimately a waste of everyone's time.

It's time to look at different security software

Hi, jswynd. Don't forget that Chrome is based on open source code.

Can you imagine how difficult it must be to make things compatible ?

I don't think you can blame Symantec, who ARE working towards a fix.

I hope if you choose another security program, that it will work flawlessly with Chrome........

Tapping foot...   I haven't had a single crash with Chrome since it came out of beta... in fact it seems to be working better than I can remember of the recent past. Wonder why? Still no ID Safe access or Norton tool bar.  Why can't Norton at least give folk an update or at least say what they've identified as the problem?  At least there would be a sense of good faith this is being worked on... really come on!

Agreed ADM14,

No communication on a product that is completely non-functional.

I'm done.

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

I believe this a Google Chrome problem, not a Norton one, even though I imagine they are working on it, too. My Norton ID Safe disappeared the other day and made me none too happy. Looking further into it, I found that Chrome had upgraded to V32 from V31. I did a system restore, which brought back V31 and the Norton Toolbar with the ID Safe as well. Everything worked fine for several hours, until Chrome did an automatic upgrade which left me with V32 and no Norton ID Safe toolbar, again. I can still open the Safe/Vault in IE- 11 as it still appears on their browser. Once opened, it also fills in the login information in Chrome, even though it does not appear on their V32 browser. That is a work around, but it is not convenient. I will probably use IE-11 until the situation is hopefully fixed.

Hi Litchfield,

If you want to still use Chrome while waiting for the fix, you could try the workaround suggestest by Bgriego.

ADM14:

I agree. It seems like there must be something more than the Norton techs to resolve this issue in a timely fashion. Do these organizations not have legal agreements and liaisons which could facilitate a smoother transition to new releases? I'm not normally one to dream up conspiracies, but the time-line of this issue seems to be following the NY Diplo-wannabe that has been in the news. Maybe some subterfuge from Google's or Norton's Indian counterparts? I would hope not. I also wonder if there really is an articulation agreement at the corporate levels between these two which has expired during negotiations; If indeed one ever existed. As we all know its money that makes the world go round.

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

I couldn't agree with you more. The announcement that there is a compatibility issue dates from 1/8. Today is 1/18, 10 days later and it still does not work. We are not talking Mom & Pop operations here, this is Symantec and Google!

Come on, you guys - the solution to this cannot be that hard. It seems to me that this rather is a question of priority, and regrettably this issue does not seem to have any!

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

I have a bad feeling about all this silence. I suspect the next release of Norton IS or 360 will not include ID Safe. The only fix I can see is either they completely redesign ID Safe and Norton Tool Bar or they get rid of it entirely with only background work keeping users protected like to very old versions of Norton. I also suspect that Google is going so far flung as to out pace Norton which can not keep up... You'd think there would be cooperation and agreement as both organizations and the the rest of the internet could benefit.

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

So maybe it's best I use IE for my passwords for now on? Norton doesn't show up in my google extenstions at all and I just reinstalled it, I'm not going to keep installing over and over again. As long as Norton is on my computer I should be safe when I browse with google chrome right?

There was a similar issue some time back when Mozilla made a significant change in the code of Firefox. It took some time to get the final solution out to the users.

The main issue falls on Mozilla and Google who have decided to make version changes every 5 or 6 weeks. Each time this happens, the add on developers have to test for compatibility. When a major code change is made, it takes that much longer to identify what the change was, and then develop new code to address the changes. Then it has to be tested against as many PC configurations as possible. But with millions of combinations of hardware and software used by Windows PCs, this is impossible, and there will always be someone who has problems with the updates.

My take on this is that I would rather wait an extra week or two to receive a product that has been as thoroughly tested as possible so it does not cause more trouble than it solves.

My 2 cents.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

Correct, Mel. As I said in your other post, you ARE still protected by Norton and until they sort it out with Google, you will have the Toolbar available in IE and Firefox.

As yank has indicated, a patch has been issued, and this is partly why it's taken so long to fix.

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

REALLY FRUSTRATED NOW!!!!!  I have updated to NIS to 21.1.0.18 and have Toolbar 2014.6.2.3. I have Chrome v32.0.1700.76 and THERE IS NO TOOL BAR!!! I have reinstall the toolbar but still it does not show up. I logged out of my gmail account  and brought the log in screen back but the Tool bar did not appear. NOW WHAT?????

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

Hi, ADM14. This is probably a silly question but have you gone back into Chrome to check if the extensions again needs to be re-enabled ?

Because of other considerations regarding Google, this has only been released as a partial fix forthe time being.

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

For me everything is updated/enabled and I'm on the latest editions of Chrome, NIS and Identity Safe.  The only way I can get the toolbar to display is to resize the Chrome window, the bar is there but blank until the window is resized.

I take it that this is a partial fix?

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

It is enabled... I have updated my computer, renewed my subscription to NIS so I have the most current version. I would love to trash the tool bar but I am afraid I'd have to resintall NIS to get it back... Maybe thats the fix as it was for another member.  Not sure thats the route I want to take because the last time I had to un-reinstall NIS I had bigger problems than when I started out. I guess I have to wait for the rest of the updates to occur... I was so hopful yesterday when the announcement was posted but alas I have been defeated. NOT HAPPY

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

I got home from work tonight with the phone ringing. It was Norton customer service. I kid you not. Earlier this morning I went to Norton Support Chat and logged in but since I was # 16 in line I canceled. So it was someone from the Norton Chat Group who was calling to see if they could address my concern. They told me to run Live Update and that should fix my problem. I had the older version of ID Safe 2014.6.2.3 or something like that... So after I ran Live Update and went to log into my email... THE ID SAFE and NORTON TOOL BAR WAS THERE!!!!!!!! I am so ecstatic! IT WORKS!!! Let's hope it stays that way!

Re: Norton ID Safe and Chrome v32 Frustration!!!

Maybe it is overkill - but it worked!

1. Deleted the old extension registration in Chrome

2. Reinstalled Norton 360 Premium

3. Ran Live Update few times

4. Took the new Chrome.crx file from ProgramFiles(x86)/Norton 360/ Engine/21.1.0.18/Exts

- file was dated 1/19/2014

5. Dropped the Chrome.crx file into Chrome's extensions window

6. Installed fine - and I have both, Norton icon and the toolbar.

I wish I was done automatically, but unfortunately it wasn't.
