Norton Identity Safe extension for Microsoft Edge now Available

My heart leapt when I received the notice ref  Norton Identity Safe extension for Microsoft Edge now being Available, Whoopee! I thought  at last we can use the Norton Vault in an efficient way

I should not have bothered. If you guys want to go ahead in supporting Microsofts objective of controlling the web -go ahead.

I want to control how my  computer operates, who controls how / when and where updates happen and what programmes I have to use.

Check out the web for comments on   Windows Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.953) & the Windows Insider Programme.

If I am over reacting - please give me your views. If not please give me your support in halting the progress of software suppliers who sell us software and then want to dictate how we use it

Kind Regards

@weeshus, that train has left the station.  Remember Lotus 1-2-3, WordPerfect, Netscape, OS/2, et al?  Gone.  Crushed by Microsoft.  We lost control long ago.

@American Eagle - yes I do remember them well. Used Word Perfect and loved it - hated MS Word! Much preferred Borland Quattro Pro to Excel, used Lotus 1-2-3, Netscape etc etc .Norton Disk Doctor, Norton Utilities MS Dos et al

But you are right, those trains have left the station - not only that, most of the stations have been closed.

It is just a pity that Norton have not been able to sort the problem with Mozilla and The Vault - again which I loved! Guess it will have to be Lastpass.

As the song says "Fings aint wot they useta be". I shall now go and get back in my box "

Re: Norton Identity Safe extension for Microsoft Edge now Available

Hi bjm,

check with Sunnil GA - but I think you will find that to be able to install the Vault for Microsoft Edge you will need to be a member of the Windows Insider Proramme. Please accept this warning - if you join the insider programme you must do a complete backup before you join. The caveats given by Microsoft are real as are the dangers. If you have a spare PC do it all on that so that your IT world does not come crashing down around your ears.

I think  but do not know that Sunil GA my well have had to jump through hoops to satisfy Microsoft - why we (the Norton Community) could not sort the Mozilla problem I do not have the faintest idea.

No problem bjm you are more than welcome.  I agree with you whole heartedly. I am sick of outfits like MS dictating what we do, when we do it and how we do it. My wife has an iPad Air and all her photos have been algorythmed into "Memories" by Apples latest update to iOS. - Ugh

Yes. right in the product announcement.

The new Norton Identity Safe extension is available ONLY for Windows 10 Creators Update Insider Build 15025 or higher.

At this time, the insider preview is the only way to be on that version. Apparently it may be released around April 11. Until then, Norton is using the insiders as beta testers.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

FWIW ~ KeePass works for me.
YMMV

Hello

LastPass has security issues now I have heard. I thought that the new extension for Firefox  and the I D Safe works. I don't use the Vault. I thought that the latest Norton HOTFIX fixed the issue for many? Have you tried it? I may be wrong though.

Thanks.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.17.3.50 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

I finally to it to work.  (A few hours ago I was unable to log into my Norton account,)  I was able to sign into my Norton account and into Identity Safe in Edge.  It is similar to Firefox (my preferred browser) where you need to log into Identity Safe when you close and then reopen the browser.

Hi floplot

The Vault and Firefox worked brilliantly and seamlessly initially and then we went through the Mozilla raised security issues of ID Safe. Now it works but is clunky, clumsy and not a good experience, for me that is. Can't comment on any other experiences.

Did not know about the LastPass security issues, bmj uses KeePass which works for him he says.

To go back to my original post - Pity about Microsoft & Appple trying to rule the world though.

.Personally for security inter alia - I use Identity Cloaker with maximum encryption to keep my traffic safe, Who Is On My

Wifi to protect my WiFi network - passwords are on paper in my safe - at least I will know if anyone has them - even if only by the smell of dynamite!

PaulGo, thanks so much for that info,

Did you have to join the Windows Insider Programme?

Did you sign into your Norton Account before opening The Edge?

My preferred browser is Firefox - I am afraid I am a little paranoid about Microsoft and I really dislike The Edge

Let us see what tomorrow brings

You sign in (hopefully only once) to the Norton Account. After that the only sign on is to ID Safe.  I have the Windows Insider version on a Virtual machine, but I was able to upgrade my laptop and desktop via Microsoft Upgrade Assistant which was accidentally available, and will be officially available on April 5.

Re: Norton Identity Safe extension for Microsoft Edge now Available

There are three important reasons why I have started to use Edge:

1.  When I'm using my Android phone I often use Google Voice search, and find that it is way, way faster than trying to enter requests by typing in my inquiry.  More important still, the Google AI has advanced so much -- and is so well integrated with apps installed on my phone --  that I get better results using it than trying to open most apps manually and then use it.  For example, instead of opening Google Maps or Navigator manually, then trying to look for or search for a nearby parking garage, and then navigating to it, I can simply say "navigate to nearest garage"  -- and I will get a list of nearby garages that I can then simply click on and automatically be navigated to.   I want to have the same desktop user experience (on my PC with Windows 10) that I am currently getting when I'm mobile; and believe that eventually Cortana will be able to give this experience.  I've tried Google Voice on my pc and it doesn't work well at all.  So Edge and Cortana seem to be the only way to go.  Is it as good as my mobile Google Voice experience?  Not yet.  But it has been getting better.

2.  The second reason for using Edge is that IE, eventually, will not be supported.   So there will be no updates to correct faults, security vulnerabilities, etc.   We are all still free to use Chrome or Firefox which will get regular updates; in fact I have them pinned to my Taskbar as well.  But, if you're going to have a default browser that integrates seamlessly with Windows 10 apps, and are trying to choose between IE and Edge, the only long-term choice will be Edge.

3.  It's easy to add notes, sketches or highlights to any webpage using Edge and the MS Ink utility.  Since my PC has touch capabilities, I can use a finger, pen or stylus to do so.  I then can save the marked up page, or share it.

Re: Norton Identity Safe extension for Microsoft Edge now Available

Having given the reasons why I want to use Edge, I also want to be able to use Norton Identity Safe with it.  But, I've found I can barely do so.  I just installed the Windows 10 Creator Update and was able to install the requisite extension.  It works -- but there are several deficiencies:

1.  Every time I close the browser, the Vault closes.  So I have to reopen it every time I want to use the browser again.  This may be safer, but I already have password protection that puts my PC into hibernation if I walk away from it, leaving it running (requiring a password to wake it up).  So why do I need this extra layer of protection?  It is a pain in the neck to have to open the Vault every time.  This was not necessary for IE, so why is it necessary for Edge?

2.  By default, the NIS extension for Edge does not make changes in your password or user name for a site if you change it.  You need to go into settings, and make sure the box is checked, for it be provisioned to automatically update the password or user name.

3.  Moreover, in IE you can manually edit the password or user name for any site.   There is no means for manually updating user names or passwords for a site with the Edge Extension.  This feature should be restored in future versions of the extension.

Re: Norton Identity Safe extension for Microsoft Edge now Available

1) This has been discussed with Norton on other posts and they are looking at future options.

2-3) If you open the Online vault through the Norton GUI you have all the options as before just not through the Extension.

It's still a work in progress and it is usable but not great.
