Norton Inability to detect some threats

Dear all,

I am facing a problem with Norton security 2015 since it can not detect some viruses and malware like Trojan.Agent-PUP.Optional.OpenCandy-PUP.Optional.Softomate.A-Trojan.ClickBot.

These virus turns files in USB storage device to hidden state, and slow down my computer

Note: These threats are identified by another software that clean malwares.

Find attached results about scans on three infected laptops with Norton security installed.

Please find a solution to this thread.

Sincerely

Re: Norton Inability to detect some threats

Hello assaadj

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

Norton does not concentrate on PUP's (potentially unwanted programs) because they don't really damage your computer. They are usually found bundled with free programs and get installed when you don't uncheck them.  To get them cleaned up, you can go to one of the free malware removal sites. Please stick with one of them until they declare your computer is clean. You may have more malware than what malwarebytes found.

Please see this link for an up to date description of these sites plus the addition of a newly listed site formed by one of our successful malware remover users. The new site is listed first in this link.

Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.

Re: Norton Inability to detect some threats

PUP is a term used to describe unwanted programs such as Trojans, spyware and adware, along with other malware which may compromise your privacy.
The term PUP was first used by persons at McAfee's Avert research lab to avoid any legal issues that may arise from calling these types of applications "spyware".
Grayware is a form of malware that doesn’t really do any physical damage to your data as other malware can, and it presents itself in a more annoying matter, such as adware and spyware to learn more about your computing habits or gain access to more of your files.   Norton Grayware criteria may not satisfy.

Try running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware along with Norton. That's what I've been doing for years with no problems so far (knock on wood). It catches PUP's that Norton doesn't say anything about. You have to use the paid version too get the best protection, it does live auto scans. The free version is lazy, you have to manually kick off scans with it.

Hello assaadj

Please go to 1 of the sites I listed in the link above. They can help you to find the hidden malware and get your computer clean.  You will work with 1 malware removal expert who will tell you what scans and programs to run. You post back the results of each test in the order of your instructions. It's basically following instructions from the tech that is helping you. They do not remote into your computer.  You can ask questions of them and they will give you the answers and will tell you how to prevent this from happening in the future. Thanks.

Hello

Please go to 1 of the forums in the link above. Also please don't try to clean up malware on your own other than running a scan with your Norton product. Trying to clean up malware on your own only makes it harder for the experts. Thanks.

Re: Norton Inability to detect some threats

This is why I switched to NOD32 which detects PUPs by default! Even if they're not classified as a virus, the damage they can go can be equal to or greater than a virus! I have no respect for a company that lets PUPs slip by! At the end of the day, we are paying an arm and a leg for protection not to let some stuff pass by!

Re: Norton Inability to detect some threats

No one security program can protect you 100% of the time from 100% of the thousands of malware released every day.

While PUPs are annoying, they do not cause damage to your system. Some people actually want the 'Features' offered by these programs. They are usually downloaded alongside a legitimate download when you do not uncheck the option for the additional download.

Norton products concentrate on malware that can damage your system, that is why some PUPs are not detected.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Inability to detect some threats

Norton detects PUP's as PUA's once they cross a line deemed by Norton.
Norton detects PUA's above their line.  Why can't Norton alert/inform below their line.

Norton criteria presumably knows above and below line.  Otherwise how would Norton detect for only above their predetermined line.  Norton has to know what's below line to determine what's classified above line.   $.02
