Norton Internet Security can't be removed even with NRnR.exe

I can't remove the Norton Internet Security(NIS) even with Norton tool removal in windows 7.

1. If I run inststub.exe for uninstall in "C:\Program Files (x86)\NortonInstaller\...\18.7.2.3"  nothing happen in admin CMD prompt.

2. If I run the NRnR.exe, then it fail with message window which says that "Norton Removal and Reinstall" copy of exe was corrupted. And that's not true because if I run the same binary exe in another windows it works normally.

How can I remove the NIS?

Thank you in advance.

Hi nemesisklee:

Just be warned that if you were running an older version of NIS and have recently encountered problems you might be one of the users who recently received a forced upgrade to a newer Norton v22.19.x or v22.20.x product.  See Norton employee Gayathri-R's 08-Mar-2020 announcement Active customers in legacy versions are being upgraded for more information.  Let us know if you plan on reinstalling NIS (or want to switch now to a newer product line like Norton Security Deluxe or the "new" Norton 360) after you have removed your current Norton installation and we can provide further assistance.

Here's the method I follow when I want to wipe Norton off my Vista SP2 machine.  Please note the warning in Step 3 about removal of other Norton products.

  1. Download a fresh copy of the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool (NRnR.exe) from https://www.norton.com/nrnr and save to your desktop.
  2. Uninstall Norton from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features and choose the option to "remove all user data" (see the image below taken from bjm_'s 13-Feb-2020 post <here>).   Note that choosing this option will remove additional static data files (e.g., .txt, .dat, .log, etc.) like your security history logs and personalized configuration settings.  If you see a check box stating "Get layered protection by allowing Norton Security Scan to be activated and periodically scan your computer for viruses, spyware, malware and other threats..." ensure this option is disabled to prevent installation of this unwanted utility.
  3. Run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool in advanced "Remove Only" mode (Advanced Options | Remove Only | Remove) as instructed at https://www.norton.com/nrnr in the section titled "I Need Help Removing Norton" to wipe additional orphaned files and registry entries left behind during the Control Panel uninstall.  [Warning: The advanced "Remove Only" mode of the NRnR tool will also remove other Norton products like Norton Utilities, Norton Family, Norton Ghost,etc.].
  4. After your system is restarted you should see a pop-up with instructions on how to reinstall Norton. Close this pop-up if you do not want to reinstall Norton.

If Norton Internet Security (NIS) is no longer listed as an installed program at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features, skip Step 2 and proceed to Step 3 by running the Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool in advanced "Remove Only" Mode.

Re: Norton Internet Security can't be removed even with NRnR.exe

1. I have tried to uninstall in the step 2("install Norton from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features") but failed. And I think step 2 would use the "inststub.exe" which I already have run for uninstall manually but failed with empty respose in the command line utility. 2. "Norton Remove & Reinstall" itself has bug because when I run it, it says that itself has been corrupted!

Hi nemesisklee:

According to my notes NIS v18.7.2.3 was released in June 2012. Unless you haven't updated your Norton product for almost a decade, the uninstaller you found might just be a remnant from an old installation that no longer exists on your computer.

Try downloading a fresh copy of the Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool from https://www.norton.com/nrnr and save it to your Windows desktop, but this time right click on the NRnR.exe file and choose "Run as Administrator" from the pop-up menu;  then run the tool in advanced "Remove Only" mode (Advanced Options | Remove Only | Remove) as instructed <above>.  If  the NRnR tool still throws an error please post a screenshot of that error message in your next reply (see andmike's How to Post an Image in the Forums).

Like I said, NRnR give the message window that says NRnR file itself is corrupted but that's not true.

Oh, I missed your message for older version of NRnR. And it works fine.

Thank you for help.
