Hello Steve. Do you have fast startup enabled on the system? Did support change that setting for you during their session?

Steve disable fast startup and reboot your system. The setting being enabled does at times present issues with software not completing installs and/or update because data remains in memory and not totally released. Lets see if that helps things for you.

Re: Norton Internet Security disappears after each pc reboot WIN 10

Hi STEVE GRAHAM:

What is your Win 10 version and build (see the How-to Geek article How to Find Out Which Build and Version of Windows 10 You Have), and do you have the latest NIS v22.16.4.15 (check at Help | General Information | About)?

When you say that NIS "disappears", do you mean that your Norton icon disappears from your system tray or that you have problems opening the main user interface, or do you mean that you have confirmed that there is no executable file for Norton (e.g., nortonsecurity.exe) running on your computer after a re-boot when you view the Processes tab of your Windows Task Manager?

Are you a new Norton user (e.g., have you been using another antivirus program like Kaspersky, McAfee, etc. in the past on this machine) or has Norton been running normally on your computer until now?  Is there any other security software installed on your computer that loads a boot-up and runs in real-time protection mode?

Re: Norton Internet Security disappears after each pc reboot WIN 10

Hi..thanks for your reply...Win 10 pro 1607..NIS 22.5.4.24  Norton is not running after reboot...I am a long term Norton user on this pc..and only had this issue after rolling back a Win 10 update ( the `new` version dropped my internet download speed to almost 2mbps and despite trying a lot of things to resolve that..including giving Microsoft remote access to my pc ..even they gave up) I was forced to revert to my earlier version of Win 10...and my download speed is back where it should be...no other security software loading @ boot.

Re: Norton Internet Security disappears after each pc reboot WIN 10

Did you reinstall your Norton after the Windows rollback? That kind of change in the OS, major upgrades, downgrades, even a System Restore can wreak havoc with your Norton installation.

I would suggest getting a fresh install by downloading and running the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool from   www.norton.com/nrnr   Be sure you run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Internet Security disappears after each pc reboot WIN 10

Hello again Steve. Windows 10 version 1607 is now out of support cycle per this article from Microsoft. I believe that to be the issue since Norton requires at least the creators update to be compatible.  There were instances with upgrades causing degraded connectivity and driver deletion if I remember correctly. The easiest way to get your install to the latest version, 1809, is using the "media creation tool" for that version. I have 1809 Pro installed on all my systems without any issues. Click "download tool now", save  the file to your desktop. Run from there and follow prompts. You should select "upgrade this PC now" when offered. Save your file and other data by selecting "what to keep".

I had an AMD based machine which got the original release of 1809 and evidently was in the middle of it when Microsoft pulled the update. It left my machine a total mess, not bootable. After several days of tinkering I got the system to boot and used the method I am giving you to correct the issue. The machine had ZERO data loss and programs remained in place.

Once you have a good install of Windows download your Norton product by signing into your Norton account and downloading from there. Run live update until none are present. Reboot. Run live updates a second time, until none are present. You will then be on the latest for Windows 10 and your Norton product as well.

Cheers

Re: Norton Internet Security disappears after each pc reboot WIN 10

Thanks for your reply..I have tried the Win 10 update you suggested..however it gets around 30% and simply fails...no error codes just a message saying installation has failed..I also tried upgrading from usb..but this also fails..so I would say other than a clean win 10 install..I will just have to persevere...

Re: Norton Internet Security disappears after each pc reboot WIN 10

The no error installation fail scenario is most times caused by poor internet connectivity. One solution for you could be placing the computer in a friends home having better internet service for the installation to complete using the media creation tool. During the install your system will be reliant on the ability to download other resources and updates to properly complete. Once its done you should be good going forward. Some other things you can test are listed here, and are at different experience levels.

Re: Norton Internet Security disappears after each pc reboot WIN 10

Many thanks for your reply...I don`t think it`s an internet connectivity issue..I have pretty fast stable internet here and only had the issue when I had to roll back from a Win 10 update because afterwards my download speed was drastically lowered..to around 2mbps..I usually get around 70mbps..I will have a read at the link you sent..thanks

Hi STEVE GRAHAM:

Just further to comments by SoulAsylum and peterweb, I agree that your first priority should be upgrading your unsupported Win 10 Pro Version 1603 to Version 1809. NIS v22.5.4.24 was released 28-Sep-2015, and even if you tried to update to the current v22.16.4.15 (released 12-Feb-2019) it's unlikely it will run correctly until your Win 10 OS is upgraded.

It might be possible to install Win 10 version 1809 once your outdated NIS v22.5.4.24 is removed from your system.  For future reference, please note that Norton recommends that users always disable Norton Product Tamper Protection before attempting a system restore to avoid incomplete system restores - see the warning in the support article Fix System Restore Problems with Norton Installed.  As peterweb noted, NIS features like your Norton Smart Firewall might have been corrupted by an incomplete system restore and could be contributing to your internet connection issues.  Temporarily uninstalling non-Microsoft antivirus software is also one of the Level 100 (Basic) Quick Fixes suggested by Microsoft for resolving Win 10 upgrade errors in the support article that SoulAsylum referenced.

To wipe Norton off your system:

  1. Uninstall Norton from the Control Panel (for Win 10, you can also go to Start | Settings | Apps & Features) and choose the option to "Please remove all user data". [Warning: This option will remove the old-style Norton Identity Safe local vault (a .dat file stored on the local hard drive and last offered with Norton v19.x) as well as additional static data files (e.g., .txt, .dat, .log, etc.) like your security history logs and personalized configuration settings].
  2. Save the Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool (https://www.norton.com/nrnr) to your desktop and run in advanced "Remove Only" mode (Advanced Options | Remove Only | Remove) to wipe most of the orphaned files and registry entries left behind during the program uninstall.  [Warning: The advanced "Remove Only" mode of the NRnR tool will also remove other Norton products like Norton Utilities, Norton Family, Norton Ghost,etc.].  After your computer has re-booted just ignore and close the on-screen instructions for re-installing Norton.

Once NIS v22.5.4.24 is removed from your system your built-in Windows Firewall and Windows Defender antivirus should provide adequate protection while you're trying to update your Win 10 OS.
