norton internet security version 4 errors

When I click on the top bar of my mac 10.6.5 and click the quick menu --> preferences, then nothing happens. The system log shows this message:

06-12-10 18:41:49    SymUIAgent[967]    LSOpenFromURLSpec() returned -43 for application /Applications/System Preferences.app path /Library/PreferencePanes/SymantecQuickMenu.prefPane.

Your filewall is completely useless, tried it, and my kernel crashed.

Re: norton internet security version 4 errors

It sounds like there may have been a problem with your installation.  You may want to try uninstalling and then re-installing.  Also, did you run LiveUpdate to get the latest updates?

If the kernel panic re-occurs, can you send a panic log?

Re: norton internet security version 4 errors

Yes, I did run the update and then I scanned. During the scan the kernel tried to scan the ports, a dialog box popped up asking if that was okay, but it would not respond to my clicks. It just continued scanning. After the screen went blank, I had to unplug the iMac and restart. The console would not respond to anything. Then when it return to duty, I tried to add "/mach_kernel" to the application the need to be allowed to run without interference, but even though I enabled seeing hidden files in "finder", your app did not add the view to any hidden files. It seems to me you should add "/mach_kernel" as a given to not interfere to as a given for any Mac OS X. I am fairly sure that the war between the kernel and which ever part of your software tried to block the kernel of scanning port caused a tight loop. attached is the system log. I tried to uninstall AVG but it seem to live on. Perhaps you can tell me how to get ride of it or do I need to rebuild from the installation disk. I have done this twice already so I do know how to start with a virgin system.

Re: norton internet security version 4 errors

I need some clarification about a couple things:

1. What kind of scan are you doing?  A Norton Antivirus scan does not do any scanning of ports, so I'm confused about the alert you were seeing.

2. Where are you trying to "allow" /mach_kernel?  In the file navigation dialog, you should be able to add hidden files via <command><shift>G, which will let you enter a path such as /mach_kernel.

AVG is not our product, I would try their website or support. Do they have a Mac product?  If so, it could be conflicting with NIS.

Also, I did not get your attachment.   You may need to rename it to a .txt file, the forum is picky about what it will allow you to attach.

Re: norton internet security version 4 errors

Regarding the first part of your message, it sounds like you tried to portscan your computer. I can't really say what happened here, but I can say with absolute certainty that we have blocked port scans in the past successfully. Perhaps you need to tell us how the firewall is configured. Which settings did you choose when you setup Norton Internet Security (Home or Office)? You can also post a screenshot of the window that came up during your scan. That would help explain things.

It could also be a problem with AVG and Norton Firewall. We have not tested what happens when you install competitor products on top of NIS, or vice versa. I'd try looking here:

Re: norton internet security version 4 errors

command + shift G does not allow items to be added,it is to go to a folder, you should have a way to add hidden apps, really. I have converted the .rtf log to a .txt file via notepad on a windows guest. I just bought my mac 6 months ago so I am hardly a mac expert, but I believe AVG may have gotten in the way too. How ever the scan I was running was a anti-virus scan as I had just installed your product and and then when I tried to respond to a dialogbox from your monitoring programs, It would not let me. Perhaps after the update was done, and I did anything else, I should have rebooted. No lock ups since...

Re: norton internet security version 4 errors

an other lock up after I tried to reenable norton filewall. the only log message was:

09-12-10 13:01:39    [0x0-0x2e02e].com.apple.systempreferences[908]    Couldn't find any matches.

I have no idea what that means...

but, I did disable the filewall completely,

Re: norton internet security version 4 errors

Here is is a piece of the firewall at the time of the locking of the iMac:

09-12-10 12:57:55    Firewall[90]    Stealth Mode connection attempt to UDP 192.168.1.2:61260 from 192.168.1.254:53
09-12-10 12:57:55    Firewall[90]    Stealth Mode connection attempt to UDP 192.168.1.2:55380 from 192.168.1.254:53
09-12-10 12:59:51    loginwindow[44]    in pam_sm_authenticate(): Failed to determine Kerberos principal name.
09-12-10 13:01:39    [0x0-0x2e02e].com.apple.systempreferences[908]    Couldn't find any matches.

Just so you know, 192.168.1.254 is my router., 192.168.1.2 is the Mac.

Re: norton internet security version 4 errors

Apologies about the cmd-shift-G red herring, I was a little uncertain if it was applicable.  Perhaps Ryan knows a way to add invisible files, though I don't think there's a way to block port scan reporting without disabling it completely.  In any case, I don't see any reason this alert would affect a NAV scan (so that may have been a coincidence).

If you didn't try it, there was an AVG uninstaller where Ryan referred to:  http://free.avg.com/ww-en/faq.num-2933

You may still want to reinstall NIS after removing AVG.  Also, there wasn't much of note in the system log, except that AVG is loading a kernel extension which may potentially conflict with one of ours.  If there is a panic log (in Console under /Library/Logs/Panic Reporter), that may give us more clues about where the conflict is.

Can you please tell me where you found these entries:

Our firewall does not print out messages like this. It sounds like you have Apple's firewall enabled. Can you confirm if that is the case? Our firewall does try to shut down the Apple Firewall when you first install, but perhaps that failed for some reason.

To check on the status of Apple's firewall, open the System Preferences application and then select "Security". Then select the Firewall tab. If it says the firewall is enabled, try disabling it.

It also might be that AVG enabled the Apple firewall when you installed it.

Re: norton internet security version 4 errors

AVG  was removed from the machine before this last freeze up up. I just turned off apple's own filewall off and tomorrow will turn on your firewall and see what happens. The messages were from a "show all messages" in the syslog display.
