Norton keeps blocking router's IP address and file sharing

I got a new desktop PC along with Norton Security. After installing Norton I cannot access the IP address of my TP-Link router nor can I access file sharing via my old Notebook laptop.

Whenever I access the IP address (192.168.0.1), I get a message saying "Your Internet access is blocked. Firewall or antivirus software may have blocked the connection." Curiously, normal websites continue to work perfectly fine.

No matter how I try to find the solution whether it's momentarily disabling Smart Firewall or changing the Device Trust setting to Full Trust, I cannot access the router's IP address but I can on other devices.

I also cannot share files via Network from my Notebook to my desktop. Using the troubleshooter tells me that the firewall is blocking it.

The closest I ever came to solving this problem is that when I tried to uninstall Norton for a short time, I was able to access both the router and file sharing. Reinstalling it caused the problem to come back.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

EDIT

After re reading the post I see you had already done what I was going to suggest.

Was there any other trial of a security program included with your new computer? If so, it needs to be fully removed with the removal utility for that software.

As far as I know, the only security program that was on before I installed Norton was Windows Defender.

On a side note, I tried the IP address via Microsoft Edge instead of the usual Google Chrome and somehow it works on there. I'm now thinking this might be a Chrome issue but there's still the thing about not sharing access to other computers via network.

What is the make and model of the new PC, and where did you purchase it? We may be able to verify what software was included.

If it is just Chrome causing the issue, try uninstalling Chrome, restart the computer and then re install. Restart again and test.

Tried both. Neither worked.

After trying other options, I somehow managed to block access to the internet entirely. It was only when I clicked 'Get Support' where Norton fixes what I believe were DNS issues. That got me back on the internet but I'm still back to where I started. I.E. Accessing the router is blocked via Google Chrome and I can't file share via the network.

EDIT:

The PC is a Lenovo Y710 Cube. I bought it along with Norton Security from the local Harvey Norman store.

If disabling the firewall doesn't help then the problem either isn't the Norton firewall or your Norton install is messed up (or maybe some other firewall was installed and has traces still active).

Try a different browser. If you do not have the problems, then it is likely something with Chrome or an extension you are using.

In the Network and Sharing Center in Control panel, is your network type Private or Public. A Public network is more tightly controlled and may be blocking the file sharing. Set it to Private and test.

You might also try right clicking on the network icon in your system tray and click on Troubleshoot Problems.

It was indeed set to public. Changed it to private. Nothing changed.

I tried the troubleshooter. Checking both problems of accessing the router and file sharing gave me the following:

"Security or firewall settings might be blocking the connection."

So have you tried it with Norton disabled?

Re: Norton keeps blocking router's IP address and file sharing

Try disabling all extensions in Chrome. Then see if your issue goes away. If it does, enable one extension at a time and test. When you find the issue happening, that would suggest that there is a problem with that extension, or the settings for that extension.

Re: Norton keeps blocking router's IP address and file sharing

Tried the extension suggestion. Nada.

I don't know if this means anything but when I go into the detailed information of the troubleshooter, I get this:

Details about network security diagnosis:

Settings that might be blocking the connection:
Provider name: -
Provider description: -
Filter name: FBNetmon ALE Classify

Are you using any network monitoring app? If so, try disabling that and testing.

Re: Network monitoring app. I don't think so.

I tried uninstalling Norton again and I was able to access both router and file sharing. Reinstalling it locks me away again.

This is really getting frustrating.

The issue here is that the user cannot access their router setup page with Norton installed. This should have nothing to do with DNS settings. They would cause the problem with or without Norton installed.

Hello Tore B Eriksson

You and the other customer with the blockage both have Lenovo computers with the same problems. Does Lenovo have any free maintenance or tune up programs.? Have you contacted Lenovo about this? Remember they had some issues in the past.

Thanks.

Re: Norton keeps blocking router's IP address and file sharing

Hello,

Have you found a solution yet? I just got a Lenovo Y710 and I have the similar issue.  Whenever I install the Norton Security, my network traffic is blocked.  I can see both ethernet and wireless can get ip/gateway/dns from the router DHCP but I can't connect to anything, local network or internet.  The second NS is uninstalled, even without restart, I can connect to everything.  I tried Bitdefender and it didn't have this problem.
