Norton Power Eraser

When trying to run NPE I keep getting a message saying that NPE has “Norton Power Eraser has successfully restored internet connection.Hosts file and NPE proxy settings may have been modified".

I know you should only run NPE as a last resort but sometimes I like to run just to double check.

This problem is happening on two laptops in my house.

Re: Norton Power Eraser

FWIW, I have some more information.

It happens on System Scan (advanced settings) and always stops when it says 'Processing data'

It worked once then stopped again. When it worked, the scan said no risks found.

Both computers still having the problem

Re: Norton Power Eraser

Plus I'm running it via Norton 360 V.21.3.0.12

NPE version is 4.3.0.13

Re: Norton Power Eraser

I have also just remembered that when saying restored Internet connection, it also said something about Symantec connection (something along those lines anyway)

Re: Norton Power Eraser

I'm still having the problem. The same message appears, however, now when I press continue the scan runs without any problems. The problems returns when I turn my computer on and run a scan though

Re: Norton Power Eraser

What problem were you trying to solve by running NPE?

Did you run a full system scan with 360 before trying NPE?

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Power Eraser

I have run a full system scan. I don't suspect any malware on my laptop. I just like to occasionally run NPE to double check

Re: Norton Power Eraser

I just like to know that it's working. The problem is continuing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Is this some sort of server connection issue?

Re: Norton Power Eraser

I've reinstalled Norton using Norton removal tool. The problem  continues to happen

Re: Norton Power Eraser

It seems there is a new beta of NPE. Maybe that will solve your problems.

See this post   http://community.norton.com/t5/Other-Norton-Products/NPE-ran-once-will-not-run-now-Windows-7-INS-Get-quot-Non/m-p/1144726#U1144726

Re: Norton Power Eraser

Think it's definitely a server issue of somebody. I now cannot connect to Norton insight server. Both computers having that issue. The other computer's NPE was working fine and now it isn't working either

Re: Norton Power Eraser

Have you restarted your router and modem lately?

Your error message from the original post mentions the hosts file. I know of it, but know nothing about how it works other than it can affect your access to internet sites. Have you modified the hosts file, or used some utility to do it? If so, try to revert to a basic hosts file and test internet access.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Power Eraser

As of this minute, NPE is able to run and complete the scan (I will check it again tomorrow). The problem now is that NPE is getting stuck on 'Checking for new version' screen. This doesn't happen everytime. Based on a quick search on here it seems like it could be server connection issues

Re: Norton Power Eraser

But what about my question about your hosts file? If NPE is having trouble checking for a newer version, it could be an entry in your hosts file that is interfering with internet access to the servers.

Re: Norton Power Eraser

I couldn't tell you what host files are so it's unlikely that I modified them.

Re: Norton Power Eraser

Everything is back to normal at the minute. Hopefully, I have no more problems

Re: Norton Power Eraser

If it is back to normal on both computers, let's hope it was just temporary internet server issues.

Re: Norton Power Eraser

It's still occasionally getting stuck at checking for updates screen. Not that often now though. I shouldn't need to run NPE often anyway so it won't be that noticeable

Re: Norton Power Eraser

NPE back to the restored Internet connection screen. Cannot connect to Insight server too. Assuming a problem on Norton's end?
