Norton Premium Family Plug In - Stop disabling plugin under google chrome

Good Day

Having an issue, with the Norton plugin services for Google chrome, where they're being disabled by a friends son.

The son has their own user account which is running in a locked down account, cannot execute programs from within the local profile (gpedit), all non essential programs are blocked (Using a created Group called BLOCK, which the user is a part of, which  denies execute against  exes in folders under program files), and google chrome is the only browser accessible.

Norton Family has been enabled, and plugins have been installed in browser.

When the son disables the plugins, a lot of the family protection is bypassed.  It looks like HTTP and DNS/IP blocking is still working; but all SSL traffic is being allowed through.

I don't have the ability to stop the person using the computer, only ensure that the machine is locked down.

Any ideas on how to force the plugins to stay enabled? or lock google extensions down?

Note:  They're being block from using a google account

Paul

Re: Norton Premium Family Plug In - Stop disabling plugin under google chrome

Hi Paul,

When Norton Family program detects the extension is disabled, the program sends an alert to the parent.  When they see the alert, please check the browser that your child uses to see if the add-ons for Norton Family is enabled.  You can find it at

Tools ->  Manage Add-ons in IE if IE is being used.

Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions in Firefox if Firefox is being used.

Go to chrome://extensions then Extensions in Chrome if Chrome is being used.

The Norton Family program still logs Web activities and also blocks websites when the Norton Family extension is disabled.  The disabled functions are

*Social networking

*Safe searching

*Video monitoring (for Premier users)

*HTTPS web monitoring

Re: Norton Premium Family Plug In - Stop disabling plugin under google chrome

Hi KateQ

I figured out a solution using google's group policy add in for Windows Group Policy.

Was able to disable addition of new extensions, while blocking the Norton plugins from being removed.

Surprised that Norton hasn't implemented something similar during the install of Norton.

Policy item changed:

Configure the list of Force-Installed Apps and Extensions : enabled (Add items below)

Re: Norton Premium Family Plug In - Stop disabling plugin under google chrome

Hi KateQ

Alerting someone is kinda weak on securing a browser, especially when the parent gives in and lets the kid continue to use the PC afterwards the family protection has been disabled (kids will press weak parents and will run a muck when the opportunity presents its self :-)  The solution that I'm trying to put in takes away

Been digging around and I figured out a solution using google's group policy add in for Windows Group Policy.

Was able to disable addition of new extensions, while blocking the Norton plugins from being removed.

Surprised that Norton hasn't implemented something similar during the install of Norton.

Extensions: Configure extension Installation blacklist : enabled (Add single item below)
    *

ForceGoogleSafeSearch: Enabled
Hide the Webstore from the New Tab Page and App launcher: enabled
Restrict which users are allowed to sign in to google chrome:  ( 4 blank spaces)
Enable Safe Browsing: enabled

As long as the Unique ID's for the google extensions don't change, this should continue to work.

I should be able to monitor the web sites visited, and update the list of blocked websites as required (ie. had to manually block www.yahoo.ca which wasn't showing up as a search engine under Norton family search engine category.  I'm only allowing access to kedrex.org as a search engine)

Hi,

I'll forward your requirement to the management team.

Yahoo.ca is currently categorized as "Dynamic Site" and "Portal Site".  you can dispute the categories if you don't agree with it.

How to dispute a website category: https://family.norton.com/familysafety/help.fs?action=disputeSiteCategor...

Thank Katie

Will look to add  "Search Engine" to yahoo.ca  (Hoping to stop searches such as "How to disable Norton protection" :-)

Re: Norton Premium Family Plug In - Stop disabling plugin under google chrome

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the post.  There are some posts and videos on the internet about how to disable Norton Family shared by some kids. Our Norton Family team has addressed the issues and/or sent parents alerts about tamper actions.

Thanks

Paul, I sent you a message but if you or someone from Symantec/Norton could explain how to lock on the browser plugins so that they cannot be removed, that would be great.

Update:

Someone mentioned that the above link I referenced  was causing a 404 not found error.  Looks like there were some additional characters in the link.

This below link should hopefully be better

Hopefully Norton will make their plug-in stronger and not removable.

Re: Norton Premium Family Plug In - Stop disabling plugin under google chrome

Hi ConnorK,

Thanks for the feedback.  I'll forward you suggestion to the team.

Our engineering team confirmed when child kills norton family extension process from chrome task manager Norton Family will re-enable it in next session when browser launched again. As extensions are only for https blocking still http sites will be blocked based on the policy.

We can't hide or disable chrome task manager. It's given by chrome browser as a tool.

Thanks

Katie
