Norton is protecting us

Hi everyone,

I want you to know that anyone that is paranoid about someone trying hack into  your pc, or etc.. that NIS 2009 does the job it is suppose to do.

Being  curious, I checked out this web site: Home of Gibson Research; http://www.grc.com/intro.htm .

Since I like to learn, I find out several enlighting things. I found that my computer is in stealth mode basically.  It's like my computer doesn't exist!!   Many others and myself here are hiding in plain site! Hows that? There are many that do feel paranoid, so you can check your computer on this web site above. You can google, Sheilds Up!!. and find the site,if you don't want to click on the link above.

I just wanted to say that I do like NIS 2009, or Norton period. Have used for many years and yes I recently had some problems, got them straightened out and everything good.

I don't know if this will be bumped but I wanted everyone to know that this is a good product.

Enjoy!

Re: Norton is protecting us

Well, I do considered myself a semi-paranoid person when I do banking or internet purchased.  Especially, having gone thru 3 attacks in a span of 1 year.

However I sometime feel that just having an internet security does not really do the job (although, it is better than not having security at all)....More important, is educating oneself and keep your softwares patched up & be smart.....look before clicking.

I am not a tech savvy persons, so I learn somewhat from bad experiences.  Several years back, I used ZONE ALARM FIREWALL and NOD in my PC and boy it was one of the worst period of my life!!!

Having ZA as a firewall was a pain.  95% of the time I could not understand whether to deny or allow programs to access the internet.  I just click ALLOW, ALLOW without understanding the consequence.

I got my credit card number stolen and rootkit (i think) invaded my PC like there is no tomorrow.  NOD did kill some rookit, but it was too late.  I lost few hundred bucks and had to "distroy" my PC cause I was not able to get rid of the pest.

After that experience, I told myself I will never ever use Noisy FIREWALL, since I do not understand most of its features.

I search and readup, saw the NIS has a "different" kind of FW...I was very eager to try out.  And till today, I have never regret using NIS, mainly because NIS FW is configured automatically and users do not need to "understand" what to DENY and ALLOW....this is definiteky a reason why I stick to NIS.

I also believe, on top of having a software FW, having a NAT router is important.  Which is why I now have a router connected to the internet.

Ever since using NIS & router, I had not have any virus or intrusion. Of course,  I know that no amount of security can prevent intrusion, but at least I have some arsenal to protect myself from those yukky pest...

Thank you

Sorry to hear of the problems of the past. Noone  wants to go thru what you have been thru. So it sounds like you are happy with NIS?

Though you mentioned til today. I'm sure you posted a question. I just haven't read it.

Did you check the web site I mentioned in my first post? I think the info you recieve could give you some comfort. You recieve the info fairly fast. I was rather surprised. I have dial up because of where I live, so the fast results were surprising. Though that may not have had anything to do with it.

I just thought it was an interesting site and thought I'd share.

Everyone have a great day!

The above shows that NOD has medicore removal rates. And detection. And ZoneAlarms does not have a mind of its own.

Re: Norton is protecting us

Actually, I was glad that I had learnt the "HARDWAY".  Otherwise, I would have never get to use NIS, or learn more about prevention.

I do not blame ZA or NOD, but myself for not being CLEVER enough.  On the other hand, I have now gain some knowledge of security and do not have to worry about configuration FW.

Thank you SYMANTEC for giving me a silent FW.  And you all from this forum.

God Bless and Love you all.

Actually, NOD is good....(not as good as Norton..hehehe).

But ZA is really horrible.
