Norton SafeCam -stop annoying popups

With google chrome I have it set to not allow access to my laptop webcam, also on Norton Safecam it is set to block access to google chrome. Whenever I close chrome I get a popup message that google chrome is trying to access my camera, also when I am browsing it keeps popping up from time to time with the same message. How do you stop these annoying popups, thanks

Re: Norton SafeCam -stop annoying popups

Have a look at your Windows settings for your camera. These are my personal settings that do not allow camera access on any browser nor through any other apps.

Re: Norton SafeCam -stop annoying popups

Thanks for your guidance SA, have discovered that the only way I can stop the popup from showing is by also switching off the radio button "Allow desktop apps to access your camera." The problem with this though is that it also stops the Skype camera from working. If I switch on the button "Allow apps to access your camera" with everything turned off except Skype it unfortunately allows the annoying popup to re-appear again.

In SafeCam settings set SKYPE as trusted. See if that pop-up reappears.

Re: Norton SafeCam -stop annoying popups

Yes this stops it thanks, however I prefer not to allow chrome to have access to my camera. In google chrome under security and privacy settings I have blocked sites form having access to camera so I'm unsure why it still keeps asking for access to the laptop camera meaning it gets blocked by Norton. Have done a thorough search using anti malware plus used autoruns and process explorer and there are no hidden malevolent programs requiring access to the camera, everything is clean. Perhaps this is actually a google chrome issue ?

Re: Norton SafeCam -stop annoying popups

Use a different browser as a test, if you get different results then yes Chrome is the issue. Conversely read this article for possible help.

Re: Norton SafeCam -stop annoying popups

I too am having the same problem with the annoying popup.  This happens with Chrome and Opera browsers. Is it not enough that I have set the SafeCam to block these browsers from using the webcam?  Every time I launch these browsers I get the annoying Norton "Attention Required"  popup telling me that webcam access has been denied to Chrome or Opera and that "Attention is required".  So ya, that's what I wanted, I wanted the webcam blocked. I purposefully set that in Norton. I don't want the webcam to be active in anyone of my browsers. But for some reason Norton insists that this is something that needs my attention every time I launch the browser. Do you know if they are going to fix this issue?

FWIW!! I also use Opera GX, I do not see the safecam issues you are seeing.

Re: Norton SafeCam -stop annoying popups

I'm not sure what is different between your setup and mine. Yes I read https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v126148153  before posting here and yes I followed the recommended settings for blocking WebCam access.

This was all working just fine (no popups) until about a month ago after a Norton 360 update and then I started to get those annoying SafeCam popups every time I open Chrome and Opera.  I also tested MS Edge and I also get the popup with that browser.

Here are my settings and other information

My Access Settings:

Here is the SafeCam history from Norton:

And each time SafeCam blocks access for Chrome I get this:

Each time SafeCam blocks access for Opera I get this:

And the same for Edge.

This means every time I launch a browser I have to deal with this annoying popup.

So how is this fixed since it started about a month ago?  Is Norton going to issue a fix to this bug?

Re: Norton SafeCam -stop annoying popups

Does disabling allow good apps produce different results? I have my camera and mic disabled at the device manager level. I imagine that is the reason I don't get the annoyances on my side. I just re-enable them when needed and leave disabled otherwise. My browsers don't hound me in that scenario. This may not be of use to others based on their needs, aka working from home, etc.

Re: Norton SafeCam -stop annoying popups

Sorry for the delay to test my side. I have N360 on my Windows 11 machine and have my settings for SafeCam as shown below. Opening Edge I am not prompted in any manner to allow or deny SafeCam access. Windows 10 is also set parallel to this even though the feature isn't available in Norton Security Ultra in stalled on my other devices. Again, I do not get popups for SafeCam on either OS nor Edge or my default Opera GX browsers.

In Windows 11 settings my settings are as shown below.

Re: Norton SafeCam -stop annoying popups

Hey Soul, you say "Opening Edge I am not prompted in any manner to allow or deny SafeCam access". Well that's because you have not set up Edge in 360 SafeCam and set it to Block.  Also I use Opera not OperaGX so I don't know why that would make any difference.  Also I am running Win10 and you are running Win11.

But hey look, Norton changed the annoying popup making it even more evident that this is either some kind of a bug or just an annoyance, after all nothing is more annoying than "hey here is a great feature. We can allow you to control your camera so it cannot be accessed on a program by program basis but if you use it we are going to make you deal with this annoying popup every time you use that program."

So here is the new and improved annoying popup:

Nothing is more annoying than using the SafeCam feature and then being told you used the SafeCam feature and that it needs your attention to View Details and change your settings every time you launch your browser.

Re: Norton SafeCam -stop annoying popups

The comparison I've made is, on BOTH Windows 11 machines and Windows 10 there isn't any difference. The popups do not appear on Windows 10 as I have Norton Security Ultra installed which doesn't have the SafeCam feature in that version of Norton. Conversely, in Windows 10 you must tell the browser and Windows what apps you want to have access to your webcam. Edge has never prompted on Windows 10 for access with or without the SafeCam feature. That is because, the OS will make the first preference, based on what is allowed in its settings, then via the web browser or other apps that were allowed there. Match those settings in Windows 11 and you should have a solution. I do. Opera and Opera GX are basically the same other than gaming features which can be disabled at will. I use it for its built in security features regular Opera doesn't offer.

FWIW!! I will never allow a browser access to camera nor mic for security reasons. Its served me well for many years. Unfortunately there are users working from home who must allow apps. I have a family member working from home still, I manage her setup outside of her employers must have settings. Video conferencing via a single APP, not a web browser is allowed. There are never any notifications otherwise due to the OS settings matching Norton settings.

I block Camera access by apps in Windows Settings. I have never seen a SafeCam popup on my system.  Windows Settings > Privacy > Camera.
