Norton Safeweb Toolbar vanishes

I use a Win 7 computer with IE9 and NIS 2012 .  My IE 9 home page is Google .  I recently upgraded to IE 10 which caused a problem with one or two programs so I uninstalled IE 10 and reverted to IE 9.  All websites EXCEPT the Google homepage website show the Norton Toolbar and the relevant add-ons per "Manage Add-ons".  I tried altering the home page thinking we were back to the previous problems with Google but any page I choose as home page and open with IE does not show Norton Toolbar or relevant add-ons and consequently no little green Safeweb icons against the search results.  However if I paste the Google URL into Run ( which I have custom installed) the Google page will come up fine plus Norton Toolbar and add-ons.  I believe it may be a problem with NIS 2012 and the new reversion to IE 9. I am therefore  considering removing and restoring NIS 2012 with the Norton RnR tool but I wish to keep NIS 2012.  Will the RnR tool restore NIS 2012 and not upgrade to 2013?

I shall be grateful for any assistance.

Re: Norton Safeweb Toolbar vanishes

The NRNR will install the latest version of your product, ie it will upgrade you to the 2013 version. What you want is the Norton Removal Tool (NRT)

Download NIS 2012 from  www.norton.com/nis12

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here   www.norton.com/nrt
If you use Identity Safe, backup/export your data. Use the CSV format for compatibility.
Uninstall your Norton product with Windows control panel.
Reboot.
Run the Norton Removal Tool.
Reboot.
Run the NIS installer you downloaded
Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.
Try to log into your Identity Safe. If you can, you are done. If not, Import your Identity Safe data.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Safeweb Toolbar vanishes

Thanks, peterweb.

I've done that and updated -lots of restarts but still the same problem.   Going through IE  home page (Google search) and using search result links brings up pages with no Safeweb toolbar either I've just noticed.  However linking to any website otherwise is fine.

Re: Norton Safeweb Toolbar vanishes

Further to the above - I have a workaround for this.  I dragged a shortcut of the IE symbol from the Start  Menu and put it on the desktop and the home page now  opens up complete with the Norton Toolbar and subsequent search item links are fine  also.  The computer is a Dell Inspiron which has a series of icons in a "dock" along the top.  This has two IE icons among them which also work fine.  The one that doesn't is at the bottom on the extreme left of the taskbar.   So I can probably live with this.

Re: Norton Safeweb Toolbar vanishes

Is it possible that the icon that does not open with the Norton Toolbar is opening the 64 bit version of IE? There is no support for 64 bit browsers at this time.

Re: Norton Safeweb Toolbar vanishes

I think you are right, peterweb.    I think something messed up with switching back from IE 10 to IE 9.  The icon on the taskbar is the wrong one.  My only option seems to be to unpin it from the taskbar and I have no idea where it goes. As for pinning the right one my only option on right - click seems to be "Pin to the Start Menu" which I don't think is the Taskbar.

Win 7    IE9   NIS 2012

Re: Norton Safeweb Toolbar vanishes

After experimenting I seem to have solved this.  It is not 62-bit problem.  I have two internet explorer programs - one in Programs and one in Programs (86). It is the one in Program. (86) that works properly in the taskbar. I unpinned the IE icon there which just disappeared and dragged and dropped the correct one directly from the All Programs list into the taskbar.  Previously I had tried this drag and drop which didn't work but I realise I was probably using short-cut links instead of the substantive program icon  All seems OK now. Fingers crossed.

Final comment after further investigation -

You were absolutely right, peterweb, the defective IE launch icon was opening the 64-bit browser which won't take the Norton toolbar.  "Help -> About internet explorer" for  the IE in Programs (as mentioned in my last posting) shows it to be 64-bit whereas the IE in Programs (86) which works is shown not to be.  Apologies for thinking it wasn't relevant in my reply to your post but it is all a learning curve for me.

Thanks again,peterweb.

You are welcome.

When you find a program in Program Files (86), those are 32 bit programs. Program Files will have 64 bit programs on a 64 bit Windows installation.
