Norton scan is constantly running

For the last two days, every time my PC is idle the Norton scan starts running.  It is causing the hard drive to run so loudly that it attracts my attention as I am working on another PC.  when I reach over and shake the mouse I get a message that the Norton scan finished.  When I check the scan history it only shows full scan from earlier in the day but this thing is running EVERY 10 minutes so obviously the history is not being updated.  I am so frustrated that I am either going to turn off Norton completely or replace it with a different software if I cannot get this to stop.  Can anyone help?

Re: Norton scan is constantly running

Hello CharletonHamby

When you first install your Norton product, it  has to perform a full system scan. It does this when your computer is idle. It will keep doing this until the scan finishes. It also has other background jobs to do. Once all the jobs are done, it will be quiet again. Norton products use very low resources normally. I would recommend that you change the idle time out to 1 minute so that the idle jobs can get done.

You can run Norton Insight, that will help to make the scans take less times.

Thanks.

Re: Norton scan is constantly running

Thank you for your response!  This wasn't an initial installation and in fact Norton has been installed on this PC for about 5 years.  However, I recently applied Norton software updates and I think it needed to complete a Full Scan since those were applied.  As you indicated, once a Full Scan starts it will continue to try running at every opportunity of inactivity until it completes.  Now that this has happened, the performance issues have stopped and things are back to normal.  Thanks for your reply, I appreciate your feedback!

Hello CharletonHamby

Glad to hear you got your issue solved. It will probably do that every time you have a full system scan running. I schedule mine weekly at night while I am sleeping. That way it can run until complete. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks.

Re: Norton scan is constantly running

I, too, have had problems with Norton Utilities running constantly in the background.  But NOT when it's doing a scan.  Task Manager showed the disk usage spiking up to 100% with nothing else running.  This was causing compute-intensive graphic programs that needed the disk to fail.  I tried to just disable Norton to see if that was the problem but couldn't figure out how to do it.  So I uninstalled Norton.  Now my disk usage is less than 10%, only spiking to about 7%.  I've installed a different security suite and no longer have the problem.  This was the only way I could find to let Norton know of the problem.
