Norton Security and Utilities - A Deluxe Jekyll and Hyde

Around the time New Year's ran its course, Utilities and my PC seemed to file for a divorce.  Reinstallation remedied minor issues initially, but after a period of success, Smart Update began to fail.  A couple of months forward brings me to now, with Utilities now unable to perform, accompanied with the "Core Product files modified..." message.  Yet, Smart Update still has its hands tied with the previous unknown issue, perhaps within my own computers, posting an "Error...." message.  I've had remote assistance do reinstallation a few times and I ran the Uninstall/Removal -to- Install/Activate process on the Solutions Help page.  Still, Utilities has packed its bags, meanwhile, Norton Security works Great ! Zero issues !  I have Deluxe with both.

Factory restores/resets, reinstalling Windows, multiple Norton reinstalls already...  And again, the problem may very well rest on my end. Rest assured I am not a professional in these matters by no means.  However, I wager a post here may bear more than not.  --  Thank you for reading.

Beside the Core Product files modified message, what issues/messages are you seeing with the SmartUpdate? If you are using NU16, there have really been no updates, other than for the Core product issues, since Windows 10 was first released.

What version of NU are you using?

Rose Gulf,

I don't believe my particular product is 360 and I have yet to use a cloud.

Peterweb,

NU 16.0.3.44, however it currently will not run/install.  My re-installation attempt first, brings the UAC prompt that states the Publisher is Unknown, etc etc... Proceeding on anyway results in the following... "The install file cannot be properly validated" with instructions to return to the technical support website.  Unsure if I am able to upload .jpeg files, but I could show the Notices.

About the updates, the smart update in Utilities would indeed run initially. (A couple times I'm sure)  After a re-installation, remote support would always mention doing so.

You do have the older NU product.

You can post jpeg files but by following the instructions here.

Peterweb,

The older product ?  I just purchased it, but it was at the end of the year. It should still install and such...   Anyhow...  I switched to a new browser and rid the devices the best I could of Norton. (A lone folder remains, yet I cannot delete)  So a clear path for a fresh try.  Thank You for the instructions on photos, I will definitely take it to practice and show you what happens after this unfolds.

Yes. The NU16 was an older version of the product with a one time purchase price. The latest, and hopefully finally updated for Win 10, is version 17.x.x.x. This newer version is a subscription based product with an annual fee that would have to be renewed to continue using the product. But yes, the NU product should still install.

It seems your second post with the second image is in moderation. We will have to wait for that to see what error is showing.

BTW, you can post multiple images in the same post.

When I get a little time I'll see if I can try installing the older product on my test system, after I uninstall the new version.

Where did you get the installer from?

Here's a direct link to the latest version of NU16  -  http://www.norton.com/nu16

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Playing catch-up... I have re-installed Security and will soon download Utilities using the link provided by Krusty13.

Re: Norton Security and Utilities - A Deluxe Jekyll and Hyde

This is what Utilities does right from the start.   No longer asking for my Product Key number either.

Re: Norton Security and Utilities - A Deluxe Jekyll and Hyde

That image is not a Norton message. It is the Windows User Account Control prompt. Did you click on Yes to allow the installer to continue?

PS

Your images from previous posts are disappearing. Are you deleting them from the IMCE forum function when you upload a new image? Doing that removes the images from older posts.

Re: Norton Security and Utilities - A Deluxe Jekyll and Hyde

No I did not allow the installer to continue.  The folder where all of this lands, has Utilities scrambled into multiple partials, after 6 or 7 attempts I finally had one land as a full .exe file.  Only a 'right-click/run as admin' method (New) kicked off the installation.  Which brought up the UAC. That is where I am on Utilities...

On NS, a good start. First, the 16 updates. Check.  <Restart PC>  Return for the Patch update, it isn't there.  Instead an attempt/failure on a SONAR update twice.  Another Restart gave me Success on Sonar.  And then the Google Browser completely goes out (Gmail/Norton/Everything) with every single window reporting "Your Connection is not Private...  Err_Cert_Invalid…"  I was working on snapping photos sending to the Desktop, to show here.  This become a slightly tougher process with one or two little things extra each time. Such as SONAR and struggling to even begin NU's installation...

On the photos stored here, I did not know and will replace them ASAP.

Here is the message on that patch that always comes directly after the initial 16 updates on NS...

Re: Norton Security and Utilities - A Deluxe Jekyll and Hyde

After NS seemed to pull through I ran a quick scan, and tried to bring up the Norton website and this photo appeared.  With the 3 other windows that were open prior, turning into error warnings like dominoes...

Re: Norton Security and Utilities - A Deluxe Jekyll and Hyde

If you are having issues with Norton Security, please post in the Norton Security forum board.  Things get too muddled if you try to get issues with 2 different products in the same thread. The LiveUpdates from Norton Security do not affect NU in any way. They are totally separate programs.

Why did you not allow the installer to continue? The partial files sounds like the downloads were being interupted. Whether you right click on the file and run as admin, or just double click on the file, the UAC prompt will come up. Just allow the installer to run and see what happens.

Re: Norton Security and Utilities - A Deluxe Jekyll and Hyde

One other thought I should have brought up before. If you use Windows 8/8.1 or 10, there can be an issue with the Windows Fast Startup feature.. See more information here. Disabling Fast Startup may help fully update both NS and NU and my resolve some of what you have been seeing.

Re: Norton Security and Utilities - A Deluxe Jekyll and Hyde

I see, I have began to merge them haven't I...  A busy morning.  Anyhow.. NU.   This morning I downloaded the NU file, but it would not run.  After a few attempts, I checked the folder and had 26 files, 24 being modified partial files, and only 1 being the nu16.0.3.44-SMUI file. (New occurrence)  A right-click/Run as Admin on that lone NU file and that brought the UAC message.  I did not proceed because after the installation completes, NU will indeed come up, notify me that SmartUpdate will not work. And the rest will function.  Yet once I close NU... after 1 hour or 1 day, once it closes... it is done.  Attempt to open NU again will notify that the product files have been modified and NU is done. This process has repeated ever since the UAC began the warning prompt (the photo).

Windows 10 Home -- 1809 across the board.

Re: Norton Security and Utilities - A Deluxe Jekyll and Hyde

That yellow UAC alert worries me.  It would suggest Norton isn't signed, which it should be.

I know this may sound unrelated, but can you make sure your machine's time, time zone and date are set correctly and accurately?

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Re: Norton Security and Utilities - A Deluxe Jekyll and Hyde

Thanks Krusty, those settings seem to be okay.  NU is out of fuel for this month I'm afraid.  A photo above shows the alert I hit earlier, "the install cannot be validated/ See Tech website"   The bad news is continuously dwindling down in the same precise manner repeatedly, that you always know what the next step must be, as you have done it many times and watched it sink.  Haha Windows reinstallation #4 of 2019

Re: Norton Security and Utilities - A Deluxe Jekyll and Hyde

I just tried re downloading and running the installer from Krusty13's link above. I did not get the yellow UAC warning. Just the standard UAC prompt.

You mention many partial files listed in your download folder. Try clearing all Norton files, complete and partial. Restart your computer. Then create a new folder in which to download NU. Then, download from the link above, and when the download is complete, try installing from that downloader. Let us know if the UAC prompt is still yellow. If not, allow any UAC prompts.

Re: Norton Security and Utilities - A Deluxe Jekyll and Hyde

So are you good to go with NU?

EDIT

And were you installing NS and NU at the same time??? If so, that is not a good idea. You should only be installing one software package at a time. Having multiple installers can cause confusion and conflicts.

Re: Norton Security and Utilities - A Deluxe Jekyll and Hyde

The Notebook-PC is smaller and faster to do, so I will perform the same shortly and see where it stands.

I notice it did  v.1803...  maybe that will be a good thing !

And yet maybe a steak dinner coupon via email says troubles begin in a week and I will be doing #5 around Cinco de Mayo.  I was wondering, are there log files that read out everything done from install to each task/scan ?   If so, I was thinking of monitoring the programs somewhat, at least.  To maybe gain a new perspective on what's causing this rotating wheel of disaster. Yesterday I saw a log file that described a handful of failed tasks and that the patch never successfully happened. But aside from that, I see no fix to this.
