norton security crashed explorer.exe

Hello -- I have NS installed on my vista OS --  I got a message to reboot,  from NS --  after the restart, explorer.exe kept  crashing  on start up -- I  this happened about  month ago --

Is anyone having this issue?

Also,  I came across a  *.dmp file in one of the  symantec/norton folders bit don't recall which one -- the name seemed to indicate  indicate that  it was the explorer.exe dump file

does anyone know were that could be saved?

lastly, i removed NS and  vista is working OK now

thanks

Hello fpefpe

What was your security program before NS? How was it removed? Was it installed on a clean computer? What version did you have installed? Have you tried to reinstall NS? Did you restart your computer after you got all the Live Updates that were available? Do you have  SP1 on your Vista machine?

Thanks.

Re: norton security crashed explorer.exe

Hello --  Thanks for the reply

I don't  recall  exactly when but before NS  was NIS (Norton Internet security)  when I got NS, I used the NS installer to

uninstall NIS and install NS --  this worked fine for months then there was a NS update, and NS told me to reboot -- I did then explorer.exe kept crashing and restarting

I then used the Norton removal tool to take NS off vista and  rebooted and all is fine --- I now installed Kaspersky with

no issues with explorer.exe

my guess is that on startup explorer.exe is load a NS dll which is causing the problem

I can't recall exactly but NIS was on the OS for a year or so

Thanks

Re: norton security crashed explorer.exe

Hello

When you had an issue with NS after getting a new version update and you had an issue, you should have used the remove  and reinstall Tool and get a fresh install of the program. You should have come to the Forum before you installed  Kaspersky and we could help you to get a working NS most likely. You could have just had a corrupted install of the new Update at the time. After using the removal tool and rebooting, You should have tried installing the new version again which is 22.7.0.76  You can still try it again and see if you still have issues with it.

All you would have to do is to remove Kaspersky with their removal Tool and then try installing NS using this link and then running Live Update until no more Updates and then restarting at the end when you have all the updates.

www.norton.com/latestns     Remember to run Live Update. If you have any issues still, please let us know. We are here to try and help the Norton customers.

Thanks.

Re: norton security crashed explorer.exe

Hello –

Thanks for your help –

Here is what I found out –

I was able to stop the explorer crash. I followed your directions and removed Kaspersky (KIS) using their removal tool.   Once removed, I did a reboot. Then I ran NS-ESD-Def-22.7.0.76-EN.exe.

When the installed finished, I add the license string and rebooted.

When the system stated, some items appeared on the screen, explorer.exe crashed.

This time I picked the debug options and it started visual studio. I as able to find out were explorer.exe crashed and noticed that the last dll loaded was from another software product, powerdesk (vcom.com)

I then uninstall powerdesk and rebooted and everything started OK.

Its’ not clear what the issue is here, why powerdesk is causing explorer.exe to crash or what added protection that the new version of NS added to make powerdesk  explorer.exe to crash

I had an older version of powerdesk and reported the problem. I was sent the current version

I installed the current version of powerdesk and rebooted and explorer crashed again.  I removed the (new) version of powerdesk and now will look for a powerdesk alternative
