Norton Security liveupdate will not run automatically

I'm running Norton Security, latest version, on Windows 10, 64-bit computer.  Updates refuse to run automatically.  I've worked with help desk online to totally uninstall product and reinstall.  I have no other security software running on the computer.  I have set the parameters for automatic to ON and I have set the early startup protection to ON and to OFF, at one time or another, to no avail.  Is this a known issue or is there an additional hidden setting?  My NIS icon shows update issue almost everyday and the "Fix It" process does, indeed, fix it, but for all the years I've used NIS, this has never happened before.

I have two W10 systems with the same problem since I updated to 22.12.0.104.

Manual LiveUpdate works fine.

Thank you for reporting this issue.

Could you all please confirm if the Automatic LiveUpdate option was Turned ON or Turned OFF before you updated the product to 22.12?

Also I'll send you a private message requesting logs.

On my two systems that have the problem, both had Automatic LiveUpdate turned OFF when I updated to 22.12.0.104. I turned it off to avoid that crap 22.12.0.103 update.

On my 3rd system that does work I had it off but not sure if it was off or on during the update.

Out of town so can't get logs at this time.

Of course is Turned ON. But I found that it only fix the FIX Now problem.... as I click live updates it still unable to download update..... The main point is the live updates not working!

Hello xafu If you haven't done so already ensure you are logging into the machine in question as an admin. Also, if you are on Windows 10 disable "fast boot" in your power settings. https://community.norton.com/en/forums/windows-881-or-10-and-fast-start-feature-0

These two things are highly important. If all else fails remove and reinstall your product following these instructions:

Re: Norton Security liveupdate will not run automatically

Two days ago, I ran the manual "intelligent" update successfully.  As of now, no Live Updates have been processed, NIS still says everything is OK.  How often do the auto-updates happen, on average?  Is there a way to determine if there's one out there without my running it manually?  I.e, running manually would not allow me to prove the "intelligent" update fixed the issue.

Re: Norton Security liveupdate will not run automatically

nodnyl1 Open your Norton dashboard and check your "History". The selection bar on the top left will allow you to scroll down and select "Live Updates". Open that and check for a live update with today's date. If todays date appears on an update your live updates are functioning correctly. Sometimes there are 1 file other 5-6 or more. It just depends on what is being sent at the time the update was ran. Let us know what you find.

Each update history will show Automatic or Interactive (if it was manual) in Type of Update field.

Automatic Live Updates should run hourly but history will only show if it found an update.

OK, checked in history.  No sign of a live update.  I will wait another day or so, maybe I got the lot using the manual update before.

I checked my history just now, no live updates now for 3 days.  I clicked on live update in the settings screen and, lo and behold, the 11 updates mentioned above all came down successfully.

All this time, I have not gotten any notification that I was at risk due to updates needed - BUT the icon has stayed happy!

I guess I'll turn on logging and see if the info you are looking for comes through.

What else should I try?

As there are multiple layers of protection in your Norton product, missing a few updates would not compromise your system, unless you visit shady sites or constantly download files.

By default, Norton will allow 5 - 7 days with no LiveUpdates until it will put a red X in your icon in the system tray.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

I submitted 2 private messages with my log information.  Today, this afternoon, my NIS icon has again changed to the red X and is telling me there are automatic updates that I'm not getting and I must "fix" the situation.

So, I'm waiting to see what the experts find in my data that causes this to happen.  I will report anything I hear, but right now, I have not manually "fixed" the issue, waiting for instructions from Norton experts.

It could be the hotfix that was announce by Sunil_GA this morning 15-Feb-2018 | 9:57AM at: https://community.norton.com/en/forums/recent-update-disabled-firewall#comments

Hi Everyone,

We have released a hot fix via LiveUpdate for "Windows Firewall shows Norton Antivirus turned off after Norton 22.12.0.104 update". Please run LiveUpdate and let us know if you still see this issue.  Thanks

The red check doesn't do "Caller ID" it's just the ringing -- Click me NOW! -- and LU, interactive, indicates how much data is being delivered, it's a PBW (plain brown wrapper) sometime with a mystery wpB  white powder Build that acts like a PUPpy that isn't house trained or FIXED.

Re: Norton Security liveupdate will not run automatically

Well, when I booted up this morning, the red x was still there.  I've heard nothing from my data submissions.

Then, just now, the red x changed to the green check-mark, nothing I did.  Perhaps something was done internally which was loaded when I booted up.  I'll wait a while and see if it happens again, guessing experts are working behind the scenes, and mark this issue resolved.  BUT, I would like to hear formally that the change isn't a fluke for the moment.

BTW, I checked history just now, and there is no record of a Live Update being done.  I checked the Live Update section of the logs and the general section, as well.

Thanks to everyone!

This thread is about Norton Security and the Hot-Fix is for Norton Anti-virus and a different problem.

I run NSBU on all my system and there has been no Hot-Fix patch from LU.

Lets stay on the correct subject here.

Re: Norton Security liveupdate will not run automatically

Almost 4 hours running idle yesterday afternoon, 2018 02 16, key board untouched, Mus electraphotomecha on its back: during the first half hour there was a message by the clock that Norton was DOING (?) while my system was idle. History lacks any record of anything done. I checked every History category. The last LU, interactive had been 2018 02 15 11:54aMST.

This morning after over 2 hours running idle 2018 02 17 -- History shows that A-LU did run and install protection updates, just under 270k total traffic. I must have blinked and not seen the notice by the clock.

This is the desktop Win 7 Pro, Norton Partner CenturyLink Norton Antivirus Online, the product is in name only because the executable are no longer NAV, they have all changed to NortonSecurity.

PhoneMan, I cross referenced the hot fix here in case the two issues A-LU off and Windows Firewall control disabled, that happened with the 22.12.0.104 phased random distribution, could both be remedied by the hot fix.

I suspect that the LU server controlled by Norton IT has some setting/switches changed while  phased random, hot fix, or some other data (marketing sales announcements?) are being distributed through interactive LU.

The Win 8.1 laptop, wall powered not battery,  is running a full sys-scan. I'll leave it idle for some time after that completes and then check if history records an A-LU.  I may see the notice while I do my data chores on the desktop. We'll see.

Norton almost lost a customer today. I decided to try again and I ran NRnR again but went to advance and did a Remove Only which I believe cleaned out my settings. After a system restart I then went to my Norton account and  did the Download and Install on This Computer option.  It looked OK but then I got a notice that my Trial had expired and when trying to activate it said there was a server error. I was about to give up and go back to Windows Defender which was working just fine. I gave Norton one more chance before dumping it for good. I ran NRnR again but let it do the re-install. This time Norton hung during the startup process. Crap! I had to restart my system again to clear it. I am a gluten for punishment so one more shot. I ran NRnR AGAIN and let it re-install and this time it finally worked. And now Automatic LiveUpdate is finally working. It did use a new seat on my License but I cleared that up after a few choice words for Norton. Now I have one more system to fixed but that is for another day as I need a drink.

Re: Norton Security liveupdate will not run automatically

After almost 6 hours idle, I checked history on the Win 8.1 laptop: it did an A-LU at about 3 hours idle requiring a re-start. It got SW to ver. 22.10.0.85 and protection updates. It's re-starting now 2018 02 17 a little after 7:00pMST.

The Win 7 Pro desktop got 3 A-LU: 2 when I was making coffee and when I was fixing a snack, about 10 minutes and 20 minutes respectively. The last while I had made a trip to the store, about an hour.

Conclusion A-LU on the server end is selective for unexplained/unannounced/undocumented, unacceptable to subscribers.

Hello

Automatic Live Updates get checked about once every hour. There are not updates every hour and even less updates on the weekends. Monday is also a Holiday for some, so that might contribute to having updates even less often. If using Windows 10, please disable Fast Startup.

The NortonSecurity.exe engine installed in my NAV folder of the Norton Partner provided product by ISP CenturyLink is getting Automatic-LIveUpdate of protection files in a robust, con brio and verve, manner on both my Windows 7 Pro desktop and my Windows 8.1 laptop, which I turned on just to check.

By the time the laptop had booted and been idle while I was making fresh coffee, it had run A-LU.

It was not the sluggish way I posted about, the third frame up from this one.

A-LU ran 9 times on the desktop since this morning -- all during incidental idle instances, phone calls, nature calls - K-9 and human. A-LU  #7 and #8 were cancelled and interrupted/incomplete by key/mouse activity respectively.

The "Single Layout" product unification is working for my combinations of product and Windows Systems.

Having the same issue here with LiveUpdate.  I'm running Norton Security version 22.12.1.15 on Windows 7 64-bit and while LiveUpdate is set to check automatically, it is not actually checking at all.  I had a hard drive failure a couple of weeks ago and have a new hard drive installed.  I initially downloaded a new copy of Norton Security from my account.  I do not recall what version it was but I know that shortly after I had a large update and after that I was on version 22.12.1.15.  I only just noticed yesterday (while perusing my Norton logs) that all updates that have installed since I installed the new copy of NS on March 1st have been updates that I checked for manually.  I have checked to make sure everything is set correctly and it is and yet updates are not taking place on their own.  I also had automatic LiveUpdate turned on when the version upgrade took place.

Re: Norton Security liveupdate will not run automatically

I have done everything I can do, but this issue persists.  I have totally uninstalled, using the uninstall/clean program provided online; I have reverted to original settings; I have sent in multiple sets of data to Norton Support; and, I have left things alone hoping a patch would come to fix it.  Still doesn't work automatically.

I have one additional clue:  My wife's computer is protected by latest version of NS and is a duplicate of my computer installation.  Her's works all the time, no problem.

Re: Norton Security liveupdate will not run automatically

Either: Find a Windows recovery point that has Norton product Version 22 Release 11.# build ##. If there are Windows updates since Windows recovery, get them again after that recovery.

Or use installer for product purchased or Norton Partner (ISP) provided installer, save it if offered the option. Use of either kind of installer will attempt to un-install and save setting otherwise use the Norton Remove And Reinstall tool, it won't reinstall an ISP Norton product.

SET a Manual Windows Restore Point.

If the product is an earlier release, NOT version 22 release 11, it's ok to use FOREGROUND Interactive LiveUpdate.

Once the product is at Release 11.#

Set Network Cost Awareness to Economy.  Adjust the idle and delay time to suit work habits. Adjust habits to turn on/set BACKGROUND Automatic LiveUpdate to ON after booting up or after setting a Manual Windows Restore point and while: Using the system, Hibernate or Sleep. Turn off/set BACKGROUND Automatic LiveUpdate to OFF before setting a Manual Windows Restore PointRESTART or SHUTDOWN. Adjust habits to check history for any BACKGROUND Automatic LiveUpdate instances, to see if there is an instruction to restart.

Run BACKGROUND LiveUpdate

Norton GUI -> Settings -> Administrative Setting -> Background Tasks click on settings. Click on the button to the left of Automatic LiveUpdate to run the update in the background, click yes to Network Cost Awareness, when it finishes, open or refresh History to see if a restart is necessary, if so turn off Automatic LiveUpdate before shut down and start later or Windows restart button. When the ready music plays log on and see what the Norton Product Version and Release.# + build ##. Repeat (optional set a Manual Windows Recovery Point before repeat) until there are no move restarts, then set MWRP.

Practice for Extra Credit: if any Statistical, Sample, Community Watch or Error Reporting categories in History are Pending click the button to the left of  Norton Community Watch (click yes to the NCA pop-up). Refresh History, the work of sending telemetry about the product function if completed.

The (Norton 22.12.1 Product Update Prototype available now)  PROTOTYPE is available RANDOMLY any time Interactive (FOREGROUND) LiveUpdate is run. Be sure to set a MWRP before volunteering to try it. Afterwards send the telemetry that was practiced for extra credit before running Windows Recovery.

This will not fix the prototype. It's how to use the Pre-prototype functioning product most easily.
