Norton Security for Mac Won't Open Correctly

With the most recent update of Norton Security for Mac (v7.1.0), I'm having issues properly opening up the application. I have the most recent update for my OS (v10.11.15 OS X El Capitan).

In the upper right-hand corner of my operating system's menu bar, the Norton icon (circle with a check in it) now has an "X" in the lower right corner of it, indicating something is wrong with the application. When I click the icon, the drop down menu provides a menu item called "Fix Now" (see attachment, "Fix now.pdf"). I click this, but nothing seems to happen. My cursor simply changes to that colorful spinning "beach ball" icon.

Also, when I click the "Norton Security" menu item in the upper-left hand corner, it has the word "(null)" next to the menu items "About," "Hide," and "Uninstall" (see attachment, "Null.pdf").

Clicking "Uninstall" didn't do anything, so I tried to reinstall the software by downloading the command line program that clears out all Norton software files as well as the application itself: RemoveSymantecMacFiles.zip.

That didn't seem to help as I get the same issues when I downloaded and re-installed Norton Security after the command line tool cleaned all my Norton files out.

This is an issue with the morst recent version of Norton Security, so I imagine that this should be a high-priority bug and I expect to get a resolution (or at least get immediate feedback) shortly.

I'm paying a subscription for this applciation and my computer is at risk since the application isn't running properly. So, it's pointless to keep paying for this if it doesn't work.

Thank you,

Belden

Re: Norton Security for Mac Won't Open Correctly

I've had the same problems (except the icon bit I don't even get that) there have been other threads for this same problem, I've been asked by Symantec for various information collections and screen shots etc. I've forwarded all the info. they have requested onto them.

I have also followed their instructions, all of which haven't resolved this issue, Symantec are aware of the problem.

This morning I uninstalled Norton security, then re-installed my OS X by doing the old "Command" + "R" on switch on then downloading and installed a new version of OS X 10.11.5 without losing my data or programs after I had already uninstalled Norton, then downloaded a new version of the Norton installation from Symantec and re-installed it (taken over 4 hours all in) short still doesn't work.

If you click on the "Uninstall (null)" on the menu eventually it does come up with the uninstall dialog box, it takes sometime but it does get there, On my Mac it takes about a minute or so (Got Mac Mini, i7 CPU, 16GB RAM) and it's still slow in responding at the moment to Norton software.

Don't know what they've done but hopefully a solution can be issued soon.

pskin76, actually, my issue was exactly like yours. I originally wasn't even getting the Norton icon in Mac's menu bar. It only reappeared (but with the "x" inside of it) after I ran the file clean-up command file they provide on their website to download.

Today I just started up my computer though and now Norton started running smoothly when the app launched at OS startup. So it appears they have resolved the issue!

Re: Norton Security for Mac Won't Open Correctly

Strange. My Norton Security is now reverted back to its old behavior where I am missing the icon again on the Mac menu bar and I see "null" next to Norton Security's menu items "About," "Hide," and "Uninstall."

I'm resetting this ticket back to unresolved.

I have the same issue and I quit the application on the task bar and then restart but the icon on the menu is not visible. I then have to hide the Norton Security to keep it running.

Re: Norton Security for Mac Won't Open Correctly

I've had the same problem today on both a Mac Pro and a Mac mini but I finally (somehow) got the Mac Pro to reinstall NS for Mac and now 7.1 is working properly (at least for the time being). I was not receiving any verifiable updates since May 26, 2016 according to the NS logs for both machines. The Mac mini is still a problem as I'm on the 2nd install attempt of that machine right now and am still seeing the (null) settings in both the Mac's Norton Main Menu as well as the Norton Quick Menu. I'll wait a while to see if it's just a really slow process from the server side to activate the software. It did take a bit of time even on the quad-core, 32GB, SSD 480GB Mac Pro but at least I got a progress screen for the activation of that one. This may have something to do with the SIP on El Capitan and the latest update (10.11.5)  is a problem for the latest NS product revision. If so, Symantec needs to get their act together ASAP and fix this problem. I've already lost a large portion of this day alone (not to mention portions of previous days trying to track the problem down) so it would be nice to see this resolved soon.

In our company we're 5 users with Macs, all have encountered this issue at some point, we found no solution and tried reinstalling both Norton Security and OS X.

OK, let me see if I have this correct.....

You guys just released an update for those of us who can't get Norton Internet Security to run that requires Live Update to install. And to run Live Update, I have to run Norton Internet Security.

Congratulations. Norton just won the award for the genius move of the year.

Hi @mrsaxde,

Sorry about that, the fix to address "Norton app cannot launch" issue is included in the current 7.1.1 update. If you have Norton app installed on you machine, the patch will be applied in background automatically. I have also sent you an instructions via forums to confirm patch is applied. Please try the steps and let us know if you still encounter the issue post the update. Thanks.

Re: Norton Security for Mac Won't Open Correctly

I'm done. I AM JUST DONE with Norton and Symantec! After finding out that I needed to use the command line to apply the patch, I did that. It worked mostly ok, but there was still no icon in the menu bar. Still, the app launched and I could actually do scans and such, and it appeared to be working like it was supposed to, for the most part.

Then came this.....

I opened VLC to stream a movie from my iMac to my Apple TV using AirPlay. No sound. I quit and restarted VLC. Still no sound. I opened system preferences and played with the sound settings. Still no sound. I rebooted the computer. Still no sound. I shut it down and rebooted from power off. Still no sound. I uninstalled NIS, rebooted, now I have sound. To be clear, while NIS was installed, I had no sound through AirPlay, and no sound when AirPlay was disconnected. The only sound my computer made was the startup chime.

I'm done messing with this. I just finished a trial of Bitdefender Anti-Virus, and it worked flawlessly. Tomorrow, I become a Bitdefender customer. Bye, Symantec!

Re: Norton Security for Mac Won't Open Correctly

Yeah i got to comment here,Its always a relief to find others are having issues with norton on their macs while of course commiserating and feeling your frustration. .Thought i was doing the right thing for my parents after using norton on windows successfully for many years i installed it on their mac with el capitan. After it locking up and force quitting it,the icon bouncing around and the programme also wouldnt open-up.I uninstalled and reinstalled which worked for a while, now its playing up again.Tells me the updates are out of date and to "fix know"I do this and nothing happens. The ! icon stays on,the computer is running crapt and the boot-up sequence is all messed up. End of story,i am about to cancel subscription and move over to bitdefender for macs. Not even going to be bothered to see if its 7.1.1 or that fixes it as the live update process is unusable. Thanks and GoodBye and Goodluck.

Re: Norton Security for Mac Won't Open Correctly

The "null" problem occurred on this machine following 2 machine boots this a.m.  Running Norton 7.1.1 Build 94 on OS X Yosemite 10.10.5.  This machine belongs to my 90-year-old parents, who will not deal well with the "About" workaround (which seemed to work this morning), & I'm leaving the premises shortly.  I hope the problem won't recur.  I know eventually I'll have to upgrade to El Capitan, but this seems a ridiculous reason to do so, and I don't have time to do it before I leave.  I will at least check right now to see whether there are any further Norton builds available -
