Norton Security Suite: The "Don't Miss Out" Popup

Hello all,

For the longest time I’ve periodically seen this annoying popup from Norton Security Suite that I can never seem to get rid of. It appears in the bottom right corner of my screen at random times but also may be set to appear when it detects the computer has been idle .The first thing I did was make sure the “Special Offer Notification” property in Administrative Settings was turned off. After that, I looked for any settings that may have caused this popup to appear but didn’t see any other related options. The popup doesn’t seem to be affected by the “Special Offer Notification” setting as it will return regardless.

The popup mentions “creating an account” but when I click next to do so it simply loads an empty frame from Norton with a loading circle. After it finishes, the frame closes and the popup doesn’t return until days or weeks later. If I simply close the popup with the [x] - located in the top right corner- it closes as expected and will return in days or weeks as well.

I’m using Norton Security Suite provided by my ISP (Comcast;Xfinity) version 22.11.2.7. Windows 10, Pro.

Re: Norton Security Suite: The "Don't Miss Out" Popup

This particular pop up is very strange as the Comcast version of the Norton product does not use a Norton Account. Comcast manages your subscriptions.

Maybe our Comcast guru @yank can comment more on this.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Security Suite: The "Don't Miss Out" Popup

Yes, I have seen that popup on occasion in the past (but not lately) on my Win 7 NSS installation and I even have Special Offer Notification enabled.

Selecting next will produce the circle like it is trying to connect to your Norton Account.  However NSS does not use a Norton Account - the license is controlled by Comcast, so it just disappears.  I am curious if you by chance have attempted to use the Stand Alone Identity Safe at any time?  It use to be offered when uninstalling NSS.  Are you by chance also running (or have in the past) Norton Mobile?

IMHO, it is just a glitch in the programming modification done to make NSS run only as a Local Vault since the Norton Account applies to a cloud vault.

Re: Norton Security Suite: The "Don't Miss Out" Popup

Hello yank,

Thank you for your analysis. I have read your reply and will attempt to respond to your questions with the best of my ability.

1. I have not attempted to use Stand Alone Identity Safe at any time.

2. I have never used Norton Mobile.

I agree with your assessment that this popup is being caused by a simple glitch. The code is most likely set to perform some kind of check such as:

If (isAccountAvail() == false) {

                displayAd("CreateAccPrompt");

}

I'm no expert, but I think where you're going with this is that since the ISP is managing the subscription/account - there isn’t a Norton Account to be created for this version. It must be inappropriately (for this version) checking that I don't have an account and then displaying the popup. Which is nonsense since this Norton Security Suite is using a Local Vault instead of a cloud vault (through a Norton Account).

Perhaps this bug could be forwarded to the Norton development team?

Thanks.

Re: Norton Security Suite: The "Don't Miss Out" Popup

There has been many situations with Norton users receiving popups they do not desire regarding different functional areas of Norton (Core, Identity Safe and more recently Life-Lock) - and some of them are generated by Norton Marketing.  Unfortunately the Norton tech side has no control over the popups - they seem to be generated by the other hand - you know the left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing.

There is a survey being conducted on the Norton Forums regarding popups in a effort to be able to convince marketing that the popup are actually driving users away, rather than having users purchase/use whatever the popup concerns.  Feel free to add your comments to the orange survey located in the upper right hand corner of this page.

Hello

That survey is what is behind the Orange thing I was mentioning in my post.
