Norton Security Suite reports CCleaner 5.49 as malware

Attempted to install the latest version of CCleaner, 5.49.6856, downloaded from ccleaner.com, into a Windows 7 64-bit installation. NSS reported it as WS.Reputation.1 malware and removed the downloaded setup file ccsetup549.exe. Have not had this happen before with many CCleaner updates. NSS Report says very few users. Could that be the reason?

Re: Norton Security Suite reports CCleaner 5.49 as malware

Hello sqang1. I just downloaded the same from here, looked all clear on my end. Windows 10 Pro ver. 1809 / NSBU 22.16.2.22. Download insight shows a GOOD rating although a very new file. Try running live updates on your Norton install and reboot. Retry your download. Please see screenshot for reference.

Cheers

Re: Norton Security Suite reports CCleaner 5.49 as malware

Hello SoulAsylum, Thank you for your reply. About 2 hours later, I ran Norton LiveUpdates, rebooted, and retried download from https://www.ccleaner.com/. This time it allowed the download but warned that it was unproven. (See file ccleaner549fileinsight.jpg.) Installing it warned of not having a valid signature (See file ccleaner549fileinsight2.jpg.) I selected Allow, the install completed, and subsequent execution preceded normally. So it appears I just caught the CCleaner update a little too soon the first time. Again, thank you for your prompt reply and help.

Re: Norton Security Suite reports CCleaner 5.49 as malware

Hi sqaeng1:

If you download a newly released installer from a trusted source (e.g., the original manufacturer's download site) and the file has a poor reputation (trust rating), it sometimes helps to go Settings | Administrative Settings | Background Tasks | Configure and manually run the Norton Insight task by clicking the yellow Run button next to the task. The Norton Insight task runs automatically during system idles like other background tasks listed in that window, but this task can also be run manually if you want to ensure you have downloaded the latest available reputation details (e.g., trust level, community usage, etc.) and trust ratings for the files on your computer.  The image below shows that the Norton Insight file trust ratings were last updated on my computer on 11-Nov-2018.

See the support articles Background Tasks and Norton Insight for more information.
