norton security w backup red x

System tray icon shows red x but program, when opened, indicates nothing wrong. XP. System shut down nightly. Red x appears on random days after start up. Usually turns red after initially coming up green, stays red until evening shutdown, usually stays green after start next day. Backup, optimization, anti-spam, performance monitoring, related junk turned off and will stay off. Annoying - no such anomaly in previous Norton Internet Security.

Have you tried right-clicking the Norton tray icon & selecting "Get support"?

Hello rcs@ravenwood-pa.com

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

Thank you for reporting this issue.

Please tell us version number of your NSBU.

Please tell us the service pack number of  your XP.

Please tell us the type of CPU.

Is Backup and the others listed turned off by choice?

Does a restart fix the issue when it happens?

Thanks.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.17.3.50 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

It scans the installation and says nothing is wrong.

Re: norton security w backup red x

Thanks for the reply. - Norton version 22.5.2.15 - SP3 - I7 2.66 [x86 Family 6 Model 26 Stepping 5 Intel] - Short answer: YES [see below] - As noted, when starting the next day it is normally returns to green. I never have to reboot this system for any reason. I tried one reboot today while the red x was present and, as expected per previous experience, it came up green and remained normal. Long answer to item 4: I retired a few years ago after 25+ years in IT management . Whatever is turned off is turned off because I have better ways of doing it. I want Norton to provide AV, nothing else. The system in question runs better than ANY of my 7 and 8 systems and is my primary system. I never have a problem with it. This issue is not the end of the world. It is an annoyance I would just as soon be rid of. I have no intention of regularly rebooting to clear an erroneous red x. I simply don't want to see it unless something is legitimately wrong. I previously used NIS or Endpoint depending on the nature of the system. I junked the latter for several reasons, cost being prominent among them. I was highly satisfied with NIS and would still be using it if it weren't being phased out. Incidentally, I purchased the 10 user backup package because I needed that many licenses and the per user cost was radically lower than the alternatives. I purchased it having no intention of utilizing the extraneous services, backup included.

Re: norton security w backup red x

I had a similar issue on Windows 10. What I did was this: https://community.norton.com/en/comment/6543941#comment-6543941

I followed the second suggestion in that link. So far no restarts to fix my missing Norton system tray icon or red "X" or orange "!".
