Norton Security won't load on Win10

Since installing Windows 10 Pro 64-bit final I've run into Norton Security not loading, showing a red X or orange ! When it has a red X or orange ! it won't open. When it doesn't load in the systray clicking the desktop shortcut does nothing.

To solve it, I restart my computer.

Windows 10 Pro 64-bit up to date / Norton Security latest version up to date.

Please don't reply with disable fast startup. I didn't have this problem on Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit with fast startup.

Hello

It sounds like maybe your NS might have become corrupted perhaps during the install of NS 22.5.2.15. Try this KB and see if it will help you.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

The link you posted is exactly what I did. After running live update there were no version updates. So I assume I downloaded the newest version to begin with.

Edit - the first time it acted up it said "auto protect" was disabled or off. The next time it didn't load in the systray. The last time it had a red X like as if the subscription was expired.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

From what I have read, I would try the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool first to see if I could get a clean install of NS.

If no joy, then I would do a Control Panel uninstall, run the Norton Removal Tool and a reinstall from http://norton.com/latestns

@SGFC  Since Mohan has requested logs please finish assisting him before trying what I suggested.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

I'll try to capture the logs. But if its like the last problem that needed logs. I wasn't able to reproduce it. I was told that running the log tool constantly would log unnecessary stuff. So it'll be hard to catch since it occurs when I first turn on my computer.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

I haven't run into these problems again. But I will not mark this solved either.

I believe the problem is caused by Windows 10. The problem with the Windows notification asking if you want Windows Defender or your security program of choice. Then asking you to trust the app.

Like I said if I did try and log this I'd have to run the log tool constantly until I could reproduce it. I clean installed Windows 10 from DVD and downloaded Norton Security from Norton Account.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

I had a problem again. Of course I couldn't log it because I didn't know it was going to happen.

I installed KB3081424 and restarted my computer as required. When I got to the desktop the Norton Security icon in the system tray had a red circle with an "X".

So I tried to run NRA and restarted my computer. Of course the red circle with an "X" turned into a green circle with a check mark.

I'm not sure how I'm going to log this issue if I don't keep NRA constantly running.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

Now it didn't load in the system tray. When I clicked the desktop shortcut nothing happened. I checked task manager and it had four instances of Norton Security UI open plus one Norton Security (32 bit).

Of course I couldn't log this either. Because SymNRA wasn't running and after the restart Norton Security loaded normally.

This is ridiculous, isn't there some other way to log whatever is needed.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

I wonder if its possible to run SymNRA from a USB drive? So I could run it every time I start my computer. To try and catch this issue and log it.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

Just now Norton Security didn't load in the system tray. Then I tried to click the desktop shortcut which didn't work. So I tried to restart from the Win+X menu and it wouldn't restart. It got stuck at "Restarting". I had to reset from my tower to restart. Of course Norton Security loaded fine that time.

This time I just started my computer and no NS icon in the systray. Clicking the desktop shortcut does nothing.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

The situation in the post above has happened several times now. I had shut down my computer for about 12 hours (overnight) and when I turn it on from the tower. There is no Norton Security systray icon once I reach my desktop. I have to restart my computer to get it to show.

I consider this resolved. It's been one week without this issue.

This is what worked

then I would do a Control Panel uninstall, run the Norton Removal Tool and a reinstall from http://norton.com/latestns

I think you're a bit premature as I have had this problem solved for 2 weeks only for it to come back again.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

I got so fed up with having to restart my computer in order to get Norton Internet Security to work that I went online and downloaded the premium version of Norton Security, only to discover that since Windows 10 has updated, my problems have come back!

I am getting quite sick and tired of this problem and I do think it's time that Norton was a bit more honest about what is going on!

Is Norton compatible with Windows 10? Having just paid twice I think I deserve a decent answer.

I have noticed when I click on Norton and go to properties, I only have my old Windows 7 and Windows 8 (I never had Windows 8). There is no Windows 10 in the properties section: compatibility. Is this a problem? My computer used to be Windows 7 and then I upgraded to Windows 10. Windows 10 should be recognised?

This thread was from 2 years ago, and at that time SGFC's issue was resolved.

To answer your question, yes, Norton is compatible with Windows 10.

You mention Win 10 updating. Are you referring to the Creators Update? And did your problems start up again after that update? Have you restarted a few times since this Windows update?

Where exactly are you seeing the Windows versions listed? Are you referring to the Norton Management web site? If so, you can change the names on the devices and remove the Windows 8 device.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

Hello,

Thank you for answering my 1st question.

Creators Update: I think that was last month. The updates that have thrown my Norton product out of sync are recent (10/05/2017 and includes Window Removal Software Tool.

I switch my computer off in the evening, but when I switch it back on again in the morning my Norton product has disappeared from the taskbar and I find the icon on the monitor to be unresponsive.

I am referring to the properties on the icon which is based on my desktop. On the compatibility it simply says, Windows 7 & 8. There is no mention of Windows 10.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

Just switching your computer off may not get a complete shutdown that is required by many programs, including Norton, so that running system files can be fully updated. If you have the Windows Fast Startup enabled you do not get a full shutdown. If you use Windows 8/8.1 or 10, there can be an issue with the Fast Start feature.. See more information here.

Please note that if you had already disabled Fast Startup, the Creators Update would have turned it back on.

The Compatibility tab for the icon on your desktop does not indicate what OS a program is compatible with. It shows options to run an older program that may not be compatible with Win 10 in a mode that makes the program think it is running on Win 7 or 8.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

Hello,

I have disabled the Fast Startup. Hopefully that will help solve the problem.

I will now switch off my computer and take a break and check back on it in a couple of hours.

I will let you know if your suggestion has fixed the problem.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

You might want to run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available. Then do a couple of more restarts to make sure everything has been fully updated.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

Thank you. I believe that my problem has now been solved.

I think it is fair to say that this is a Windows 10 problem.

Thanks again for your help.

Re: Norton Security won't load on Win10

I hope your issue is solved.

The Fast Startup feature sounds great, but it is not widely understood what issues it can cause. And it is not just Norton that is affected, but any program that needs to update running system files.
