Norton seems to control the windows security center, stopping the firewall and malware protection!!!

Help! Norton needed a liveupdate because the liveupdate was out of date so i had to run liveupdate, but it turned off the windows security center firewall and malware protection! And windows security center is telling me i am unsafe but when i click on turning it on/off setting, it says that have more than 1 firewall running can conflict with eachother, and with the malware protection, it says Norton reports that it is up to date and virus scanning is on. Although both malware protection and firewall are turned off.

And everytime i go on this laptop, this windows secutiry center pops a message saying i am not safe because some things are turned off.

Do i listen to Norton or windows security center? Am i safe or not? I am so confused! Before it used to be Norton is on and so is windows security center!

Thanks for all your help!

Re: Norton seems to control the windows security center, stopping the firewall and malware protection!!!

On my computer Norton interfaces with the Windows Security Center so that WSC knows that Norton is protecting my computer. Sounds like yours isn't working that way.

What Norton Product are you running and what version is it?

What version of Windows?

Re: Norton seems to control the windows security center, stopping the firewall and malware protection!!!

Security centre is correct in advising you not to run two firewalls simultaneously.

You don't say what product or version of 'Norton' you have (NAV, NIS, Norton 360?). Nor for that matter have you told us what version of Windows (Windows XP, service pack 2 or 3, Vista, Windows 7?)

If you have NAV, the Norton intrusion protection is seen by security centre as a firewall (which it is, sort of). If you want to use another firewall, either the Windows one or (better) a third party two way firewall (e.g. I use Zone Alarm Pro), turn off intrusion protection in NAV.

If you have NIS then (to the best of my knowledge) that includes a two way firewall, so turn off the Windows firewall.

It's not quite the same thing, but you might find the following thread of mine useful:

As long as the Windows Security Centre is telling you that Norton is up to date and virus scanning is on then you are OK. You are running Norton 360 so the Windows Firewall should be turned off as it could create issues because Norton 360 has its own firewall protecting you and you should not have both turned on.
