Norton Site safety warnings on Firefox upgrade

Just thought I would let people know, on attempting to upgrade to the latest version of Firefox (I manually update) Norton Site safety reported the server was infected with malware. Obviously I did not install and tried again with a different server. It may have been a false report I don't know but I never expected to get a warning on upgrading Firefox via official Mozilla site.

Re: Norton Site safety warnings on Firefox upgrade

Hi reactivate,

I just updated to Firefox 3.6.9 about half an hour ago without problems; however, I updated via the Firefox menu by clicking on "Help" and then "Check for updates" (I've got the German version of Firefox, so I hope my translation is more or less correct). There was no problem.

In the meantime, you may want to submit this possible false alarm to Symantec via this form (you can submit websites, too):

Re: Norton Site safety warnings on Firefox upgrade

Hi reactivate,

I'm unable to reproduce the problem after several attempts on different computers. The update downloaded pretty smoothly and there are no such reports seen. Do you have the address/url of the server which you think SafeWeb reported as Malicious.

Thanks,

Venkat

Sorry Venkat, unfortunately I did not note down the URL. I have just tried several times again myself getting at least five different servers, but all showing o.k in Norton site safety. I just hope that the site safety report was false because I would hate to think that Firefox is being hosted on a malicious server used by Mozilla. If I get any further such reports from Norton Site safety in future I will make sure I get the URL and post it to the forum.

Hi Yaso, I usually update via http://en-gb.www.mozilla.com/en-GB/firefox/customize

Re: Norton Site safety warnings on Firefox upgrade

Hi reactivate,

Downloads of the full Firefox installer are done from mirror sites, so it is possible that Norton alerted to a site that may also have had suspicious downloads seen there in the past.  Since the download link at Mozilla goes directly to the Firefox installer there should be no danger of encountering anything else at the site.  I think Norton was simply alerting to the website address.  This has happened to me in the past with other software that use mirror sites, and I simply cancel the download and try again for a different site.  Upgrading from one version to the next is easiest using the onboard Firefox updater:  Help > Check for Updates...
