Norton Toolbar did not update for Firefox 18

Hello,

I am running NIS 2013 version 20.2.0.19. However, the toolbar did not update from version 2013.2.2.2 (which apparently does not support Firefox 18).

Is there a simple way to update the plugin to 2013.2.3.1? I'd like to avoid a reinstall if possible.

Firefox 18 on Win7 Ultimate 64 bit

Thanks.

Me too. I've tried running Live Update and nothing new yet. Will try again tomorrow morning...

However, I'm using the one from Comcast, is that a different update?

Sorry, can't edit my previous post now... but I'm using Windows XP.

Until a fix is done, I've reverted back to FF 17.0.1.

Disregard my posts. I rebooted my computer applied the update again and now it's working.

Can't be much help to the OP but I also updated my laptop which is running Windows 7 and that went fine. Did you run the update before applying the Firefox one?

Hi JPV789,

Glad you got it sorted and  the blue text above is the key to succesfully updating to the latest FF version.

BTW, if go to the folowing link you wil find the post I made on the Comcast forum in regards to the update to FF 18 and there are other posts in that same thread in reagrds to other corrective actions associated with Norton Security Suite.  That is a good place to seek info.

Re: Norton Toolbar did not update for Firefox 18

Hi y3tk,

Did  ou install the firefox 18 update prior to applying the Norton PATCH?  If so, that could be the casue.

Let me back up - did you run LiveUpdate until you received a PATCH and applied it?  The PATCH contains the new Firefox add-on for the Norton Toolbar.

If you have already applied the PATCH and updated to FF 18 prior to receiving it, you can try to uninsatll and reinstall FF.

Please let us know how you get on.

I did check that I was on the correct version prior to upgrading Firefox. I've also tried removing Firefox and reinstalling with no luck.

Yes, I did check if the extension is enabled.

It shows:

Norton Toolbar is incompatible with Firefox 18.0.

As I mentioned previously, I have the correct NIS version, but the plugin was not updated.

The version number did not change when the Norton Toolbar add-on for FF 18 was installed.  So if you do not remembe receiving a request for the PATCH to  APPLY NOW or APPLY LATER, you have not update the add-ons.

You can also go to History > LiveUpdate (on the drop down menu) and go thru your LiveUpdates to see if you can locate the following entry.  You'll neeed to click on More Details to expand it.   If you do not have it, then run LiveUpdate (rebooting if requested) unitl the specific words "no update found" are displayed by LU and then reboot and see if you have the correct add-on.

Please keep us posted.

Re: Norton Toolbar did not update for Firefox 18

I do not see a "Norton Toolbar Add-on for Firefox" in any of the updates from yesterday. However, I ran LiveUpdate several times yesterday and today to bring it current. I still have not received the update.

Just to give you an idea, LiveUpdate has run 9 times today. I just ran it for a 10th time and received a few updates, but no toolbar. I've also tried rebooting and running LiveUpdate, but that didn't resolve the issue either.

As of right now, NIS LiveUpdate shows "No updates found."

Thanks for the responses.

Re: Norton Toolbar did not update for Firefox 18

Hi y3tk,

Any chance it could have come down via an automatic LiveUpdate during the late evening of the 7th.  Just curious - do you leave your system on 24/7?  I got mine yesterday AM because I shut down every night.

Am I correct in understanding that since you do not have the PATCH  as yet, that you did upgrade to FF 18 already - I understand you thought you had received it by checking the version number.

Kudos0

Re: Norton Toolbar did not update for Firefox 18

Yes, my system is on 24/7. I looked through the updates on 1/7 and don't see it there either. It just seems that my system is not pulling it down at all.

As for checking the patch before the upgrade, I verified that I had the correct NIS version after checking the forums here. I just assumed that I would have the correct toolbar version as well (since it showed my system as up to date). Unfortunately, that isn't the case and I can't find a way to get the correct toolbar version through LiveUpdate.

Re: Norton Toolbar did not update for Firefox 18

OK, you probably will not like what I am going to suggest - most folks do not like it - but it works.

This is a situation I have come across before in NIS, N360 and NSS with previous FF upgrades. Following the exact procedure that follows has produced the desired results of the NTB appearing in FF. Do not add any addtional steps such as running the Norton Removal Tool, as that may cause you to lose your ID Safe, customised settings and will also remove any other Norton programs you may happen to have installed.

It is highly recommended you export your ID Safe data prior to starting this procedure.  You should not lose it during the procedure - but please export it as a precautionary measure.

Please do the following in the order I list:

Totally uninstall Firefox

Download a fresh copy of Firefox 18.0. from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/new/

Install the fresh copy of firefox.

Download a fresh copy of your Norton product from here:

NIS - www.norton.com/nis20

NAV - www.norton.com/nav20

N360 Standard - www.norton.com/n360s_20

N360 Premier - www.norton.com/n360p_20

Remove   your Norton product using Programs and Features (Add/Remove Programs if you are using XP) - do not run the NRT as you'll want to keep your Identitiy Safe and other settings.

Install the fresh copy of your Norton product. Run LiveUpdate (rebooting as requested by LiveUpdate) as many times as necessary for it to respond with the specific words  "no updates found".  Please note that you will receive a PATCH APPLY NOW or APPLY LATER request along with the download of the NTB Add-on for FF.  Please click on APPLY NOW, let it
run.  If it finishes and you receive aa Explore button click on it.  If it goes back to your Norton product, continue to run LiveUpdate (rebooting if requested) until it responds with the specifc words "no updates found".  If your Norton product does not open after the Explore button is clicked, please reboot your system and then continue with running LiveUpdate

Once all that is done in the order I am asking for you to do it, please check Firefox 18.0 and also look at "Add-on's" and see if Norton Toolbar 2013.2.3.1 and Norton Vulnerability Protection 11.1.1.5-2 are listed and shown as enabled. Please also check on the Firefox Menu Bar > View > Toolbars - Norton Toolbar is checked.

Do you now have the Norton Toolbar in FF 18.0.?

Please let us know how this goes.

Re: Norton Toolbar did not update for Firefox 18

A reinstall resolved the issue. However, it was way too much effort for what amounts to replacing a single file. Perhaps Norton should look into better options for correcting these types of issues in the future.

You are quite welcome.  Usually this can be avoided by not upgrading to the newest FF version until after you have received the new Norton Toolbar add-on for FF.

Many folks are not aware that FF has an auto update feature which gives you the latest FF version.  In order to wait until such time as Norton updates the NTB, you can go into Firefox via the Menu Bar > Tools > Options > Advanced > Update Tab and select Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them.  Go ahead and change that option now so you'll be able to avoid this with the next update of FF.

Will this issue of no Norton toolbar in Firefox 18 resolve itself if I wait?   Norton toolbar is there in IE.

If you tried everything suggested in this thread then you are at the same point that y3tk was at and the only way I have found to resolve the issue is to follow the solution I posted.  It will not resolve itself by waiting.

Re: Norton Toolbar did not update for Firefox 18

Thanks .

It did resolve itself.

I installed some Windows updates as outlined in Susan Bradley's Patch Watch of Jan 9. Those required a re-boot of Windows. This was the SECOND reboot since the upgrade to FireFox 18, not the first.  That put the toolbar in Firefox. I did not have to do the uninstalls that were listed in this thread.

Thanks.

IMHO, you lucked out - it's amazing what a reboot can do.

If I saw the same Patch Watch you did, I can't see any corelation between security certificates and FF 18 working after a second reboot, or perhpas the restart of FF itself?

Hi jazzss23:

I also noticed that the correct version of the Norton Toolbar was not displayed in Firefox until after a re-boot triggered by a Windows Update.

I ran a NIS LiveUpdate prior to upgrading to FF18, and my update history showed that the new Norton Toolbar had installed successfully.  However, NIS did not prompt me to re-boot after the LiveUpdate and the Add-on Manager in FF17 indicated that I still had the old v. 2013.2.2.3 toolbar.  Closing and re-launching FF17 had no effect.

It was only after Windows Update installed the Patch Tuesday updates and re-booted my computer that the correct v. 2013.2.3.1 Norton Toolbar appeared in the FF17 Add-on Manager.  Once I was sure I had the correct Norton Toolbar I went ahead with the upgrade to FF18.  I just recently upgraded to NIS 2013 so I'm not sure if this is typical behavior, but I'm assuming that at least one re-boot was necessary after the NIS LiveUpdate to refresh my Windows registry and get all the version numbers in synch.

Since neither of you mentioned it and it doesn't appear in the screenshot Imacri provided, did either of you receive a PATCH APPLY NOW or APPLY LATER in conjunction with the LiveUpdate that downloaded the NTB Add-on for FF?

Re: Norton Toolbar did not update for Firefox 18

What happened to me was the following: I was careful to first run LiveUpdate and let NIS 2012 install the compatibility patch; then, as requested, I restarted the computer, and proceeded to update Firefox 17 to 18. Before updating to 18, I checked the version number of the Norton toolbar in Firefox 17's add-on list. It was still displaying the number of the previous version, so I restarted Firefox, and the number switched to the correct one (2012.5.10.1). I then went ahead with updating Firefox to 18. On opening Firefox afterwards, I saw that the Norton toolbar had vanished and was no longer listed among the toolbar displaying options in Firefox; the version number of the Norton toolbar was still displayed correctly in Firefox's add-on list (2012.5.10.1). I had not yet installed the Tuesday Windows updates (for my Vista computer), and having read in this thread that the installation of these patches had solved the issue for one poster, I proceeded to install them. No change after the reboot. I was already thinking I would have to reinstall NIS 2012 and Firefox; but what solved the problem for me was the following: I went to the Firefox add-ons list and simply deactivated only the Norton toolbar (leaving Norton Vulnerability Protection on). I restarted Firefox, then went back to the add-ons list, reactivated the Norton toolbar, and restarted Firefox yet again...and the Norton toolbar was back! :-) So if the version number of the toolbar is displayed correctly in Firefox, try to deactivate and reactivate the Norton toolbar in Firefox's add-on list, restarting Firefox after each step. Maybe it will work for you.

Re: Norton Toolbar did not update for Firefox 18

Thanks for the feedback Yaso.  Did you see my version of updating NIS 2012 in my inital post in this thread?  I had still a different situation - one which to my way of thinking was how it should be.  Download the NTB FF Add-on via LU, Restart Norton (as is normal for NIS 2012), update FireFox vi Help > About > Check for updates, allow install, reboot FF and everything workde as advertised.  This was before the Windows Updates came down, on Vista.

This is really crazy as it appears everyone is having something different.  It is going to be tough for anyone to duplicate.

Hi Yank:

I didn't get a prompt to Re-boot Now / Later with the LiveUpdate, but the details for the LiveUpdate also show that Reboot Required was deliberately set to No by Symantec. My NIS 2011 always used to prompt me to re-boot after the NIS Toolbar update for Firefox was delivered, but I just upgraded to NIS 2013 a few weeks ago so I have no idea if this is normal for NIS 2013 toolbar updates.

The 2013 products do not always ask you to reboot as past products did.  It also appears it is dependent on your operating system as to if the Apply updates only on reboot option is available.

Here is the info from the NIS version 20  Help section of "Turning on or Turning off Apply updates only on reboot"

https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?actstat=activated&buildname=Retail&conntype=100000000&coreservice=Startup+Type%3Aauto+State%3ARunning&cpu=AMD64+Family+16+Model+5+Stepping+2&ct=us&curdefs=20130111.003&datetime=01-12-2013+0%3A49%3A27+AM+GMT&defbrowser=Internet+Explorer&dsfree=385.89&dstotal=496.75&endpointid=%7Bbdc8f220-a8ba-11de-9fd4-90e6ba31ad0c%7D&entsrc=help&env=prod&hbguid=bdc8f220-a8ba-11de-9fd4-90e6ba31ad0c&hcmode=false&heartbeatID=bdc8f220-a8ba-11de-9fd4-90e6ba31ad0c&helpid=nav_lu_reboot_update_vnt&ieversion=9.0.8112.16421&layout=Retail&layouttype=ESD&lg=en&lic_attr=21124114&lic_type=16&memload=24&memtotal=6748&os=windows&oslang=iso%3AENG&oslocale=iso%3AUSA&osvers=6.1&osversion=6.1+7601.17944.amd64fre.win7sp1_gdr.120830-0333&partnerid=&partnername=Retail&plang=sym%3AEN&plgid=2&plid=2&product=Norton+Internet+Security&psn=3X6VHMKDPH8J&pvid=f-home&remdays=329&skuf=21228659&skum=21234721&skup=21234720&spversion=1.0&sublength=338&subremaining=329&substatus=current&symskucurrent=21234720&symskumedia=21234721&utm_medium=product&utm_source=symc&vendorid=&version=20.2.0.19&docid=v73307035_NIS_Retail_2013_en_us

The Apply updates only on reboot option is available only on Windows 7 and Windows 8.

It appears to me from this info that if you turn ON the Apply updates only on reboot - that you receive a Restart Now or Restart Later,  but if you turn OFF the Apply updates only on reboot - you receive the Apply Now option.

When you click Restart Now, your computer is restarted and the program updates are applied. When you click Restart Later, the program updates are applied when you restart your computer.

When you click Apply Now, the program updates that do not require system restart are applied instantly. However, the program updates that require system restart are automatically applied the next time you restart your computer.

I'm not sure that answers anything or not, but at least with Imacri being on Vista it certainly explains why they did not see Apply.

Thanks for posting that information - I'd never heard of the Apply Updates only on Reboot option.  As you suggested, it doesn't look like that option is available to me since I have NIS 2013 and a 32-bit Vista OS.  I can't imagine why Symantec has stopped prompting XP and Vista users of NIS 2013 to Restart Now / Restart Later after pushing a product update like the Norton Toolbar. While I am waiting for your image to be approved, this is what my Settings looks like on Win 7 (64 bit):

I did go back to my LU History and when I received my NTB add-on for FF, it also showed NO for Reboot Required. which would explain why I got an APPLY.  It does appear to me that in XP/Vista since the APPLY is not availabel that it shold require a reboot - as it did on my NIS 2012 installed on a Vista laptop.

Hi yank:

Just a bump to let you know that my screenshot has finally been approved and posted in message 28.  As you can see, there is no setting to allow me to turn Apply Updates only on Reboot ON or OFF in NIS 2013 on my 32-bit Vista machine.

Based on the information JohnDissident posted in message 30, it sounds like my Vista machine is behaving in a similar fashion to a Win 7 or Win 8 machine that has Apply Updates only on Reboot turned ON.  It appears that if a product update is pushed to my Vista machine, I will not receive a Patch Apply Now / Apply Later or Restart Now / Restart Later message, and the update will be silently applied the next time I re-boot my computer.

If Symantec wants users to delay upgrading their Firefox browser until after the NortonToolbar add-on for Firefox is updated, it would be helpful if NIS 2013 users with a XP or Vista OS received some sort of pop-up message alerting them that a product update had been delivered and a re-boot was required.

When I originally downloaded the FF 18 update, it did not delete my Norton toolbar, but crashed everytime i closed a page. As annoying as that is, I was willing to deal with the stupid crash and crash report just to keep the toolbar. Naturally, I did not like what you suggested, but I did it all just like you said to, I found the Norton Toolbar under my FF Extentions and enabled it. Now, I am back to the exact place I started, with FF crashes and crash reports. Are you sure there is no other way??? I am running Windows 7 - 64. I might have to revert to a previous version of FF if it will let me.

Thanks anyway.

How do I get the NVP back? I had it when I first installed FF 18, but it is gone  since I deleted it and reinstalled it.

Please disregard my above post. I finally got both the toolbar and NVP.

I just followed the directions and did several live updates and reboots. Both appeared in my extensions as disabled. After enabling them and a FF reboot; everything works.

Thanks a bunch for this fix. What will we have to do when FF 19 comes around, I wonder.

Hi Imacri,

That might be a good one for the suggestion board, however no one knows what version 21 or beyond may hold for us in reagards to the way that reboots and other updates are handled by Norton.

Hi Left_C,

Glad you got it sorted and in answer to your highlighted question, see my post earlier in this thread, it has helped avoid the situation with the missing NTB in the past.

Hi jakapn,

I have no idea about a fix being available - all I can think of would be to revert to the version of Firefox you were using prior to upgrading to FF18 and if that works, do not upgrade to FF18.  B esure to change the auto update feature in  Tools > Options > Advanced Tab > Updates to Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them.

Did they say anything about downgrading to 2012 instead?  FWIW 2012's NTB for FF is working fine for me with FF 18...

Today, I upgraded to Firefox 18, and my Norton toolbar etc. disappeared. If I am reading the updates correctly, there seems to be no patch available for 2011. Is there a fix available?

Hi jakapn:

The last Norton Toolbar update that Symantec released for NIS 2011 users was for Firefox 16 (see SendOfJive's post here in my thread NIS 2011 Norton Toolbar Not Compatible with Firefox 17).

Symantec originally planned to discontinue support for Firefox 18 for NIS 2012 users as well (see forum administrator Tony Weiss'  post here titled Firefox 17 Support for Norton Toolbar) but that decision was reversed in late December.  A far as I know, Symantec will continue to support future releases of Firefox until further notice, but only for NIS 2012 and 2013 users.

Re: Norton Toolbar did not update for Firefox 18

I just ran live update until no more updates were available. I then downloaded Mozilla Firefox 18.0.2 and installed. My identity safe is working fine.
