Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

I have been having a LOT of problems getting the toolbar and vault to show up in Chrome on Win 10.  Just got them both working with help from the forum here, but now have a different problem.  On my Laptop, the Norton Toolbar is now about 1/8" wide, unreadable.  It was fine before (when showing at all). I have searched for the past hour for a solution, can find nothing.  How do I change the toolbar size?

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

How to post an image in the forums.  Norton Toolbar is not user sizable afaik.

I think Chrome54 address bar is a tad taller than pre-54 and by comparison Toolbar feels shorter.   I think header space is set by browser.  I think Chrome54 uses the zoom level of the OS now.

I just wanted to say "Thank You" Google Chrome Team for making the Chrome interface bigger on High-DPI screens. It looks great now, I hope you guys don't change it.

and re Chrome53

If things look different it's because they seem to have made material design the default option for the top chrome of the UI. Just enter chrome://flags & scroll down to Material Design in the browser's top Chrome & you should be able to change it back to non material design. Personally I like the material design look in it.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

The toolbar is fine, same size as always on my desktop, but now too small to read on my laptop, both the same up to date Chrome version (54.0.2840.71 m), same Norton Security (cannot find a version number, but it is up to date on both computers.

Same versions of the Norton Security Toolbar (2015.7.1.12), and Norton Identity safe (1.0.5)

I cannot find a reason for the toolbar to appear so totally different on the two. It was fine on the laptop previous to the update to the latest Chrome version, which is the same version as on the desktop.

So, Chrome Omnibox (address bar) is exactly the same, while Norton Toolbar is unreadable on laptop.

Have you tried any fixes... e.g., remove and reinstall Norton extensions.

I am having this exact same problem. I just got a new laptop (Acer Predator with UHD screen), installed Chrome and my Norton toolbar is unreadable. It's there but is waaaay too small. I'm wondering if this is a function of the 4K resolution?

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

OK, I did find a difference.  On the desktop, it is Norton Security with Backup, on the laptop it is just Norton Security.  Both have the same serial number and version, 22.8.0.50. Do not know why they are different, I installed on the laptop by clicking on the licensed product in my Norton user account and installing from there.

Other than that, everything I can check is the same.  I did not try removing the extensions, just disabling and re-enabling them.  Tomorrow I will try removing and re-installing them.

I will try to get pictures of both posted tomorrow night after I get home.

I do not think it is a resolution problem, it worked just fine on my laptop until the toolbar stopped showing up period.  Just got it back, but now it is a very thin, almost unreadable bar.

I have Chrome 54 64bit and Norton Security 22.8. I choose to have the toolbar hidden since I do not need it. So now have it shown. It is the same size as Chrome's onmibar. I have a 15.6" laptop with screen resolution 1600x900.

Here are pics of my Laptop and Desktop toolbars.

Both WIN 10, Chrome browser (up to date)

Notice much narrower toolbar on the laptop relative to the desktop. The laptop is a 13" screen, so the toolbar is about 1/8" wide.  It used to be the same size as the address bar.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

Looks to me like a graphic resolution problem. Did you try resetting Chrome? Go to settings/ show advanced settings/ reset settings. Also what do you have your screen resolution set to? Does different resolutions change it? If you turn hardware acceleration off does it fix it?

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

How could it be a graphics resolution problem, when everything else on the screen is the same as it always was.  Remember, I said the Norton Toolbar WAS the same size as the address bar previously on the laptop, until Iost it entirely.  When finally getting the toolbar back on both my desktop and laptop, the one on the laptop is just about unusable. Nothing changed on the laptop, same graphics driver, resolution, etc. as always.

When I get home this evening I may activate IE on the laptop, just to see if it is a Chrome problem, but I am running Chrome on both systems, so if it is a Chrome issue would I not see it on the desktop also?

Also, when the toolbars disappeared on both systems, it also disappeared in IE on the desktop, so still leading me to a Norton issue.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

Every computer is different. You cannot compare your desktop to your laptop. Try resetting Chrome and then try turning off hardware acceleration. Chrome recently was updated. On IE did you look in add ons? Also in Google Chrome the Norton toolbar does not have to be visible to protect you. After I install Norton I click on the "x" on the left of the Norton toolbar. That hides it.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

Is this related

If the resolution of the display on that PC is high enough, and the physical size of that display is small enough, then you’ve got what’s called a high DPI display. And you will need to scale the UI in order to make commonly-used interfaces—icons, buttons, text, whatever—readable and usable.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

The displays are both the same as they have been for at least a year, nothing has changed, except that on the laptop the Norton Toolbar is now MUCH smaller than it was previously.  It is NOT a display setting, it is a CHANGE in the way ONLY the Norton Toolbar is now displaying. Everything else in the display is the same.  All the icons, taskbar, address bar, etc. is just fine and the same as they were.  The Norton Toolbar was just fine up to the time the toolbar disappeared on both computers, now that they are back, it is different on the laptop, but nothing else on the laptop screen changed. I sure won't change the display setting making everything else larger just so I can see the Norton Toolbar.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

I know Norton protection does not depend on the toolbar being visible, but I use Vault, that does have to be visible to open the logon screen.  I also use Norton Safe Search, that too is on the Toolbar.  Chrome is up to date, I checked that earlier.  Hardware acceleration was already off, I did the Chrome reset, re-enabled just  the Norton apps,  toolbar is still tiny.

Looks like no one has a clue what is causing this.  I reiterate: The Toolbar was fine before, now it has changed! It had the same relative size relative to the other screen items as the desktop, now it does not.   It is the ONLY thing that has changed from before.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

Back to your original post. Nothing has changed in the Norton toolbar. It is something specific to your laptop. I have Norton Security 22.8 running on 7 different computers. All using Chrome 54 with no tiny Norton toolbar. Did you try removing the toolbar from Chrome then closing out Chrome? Then re adding the Norton toolbar extension? Did you try completely uninstalling Chrome? Norton toolbar extension for Chrome is version 2015.7.1.12. What extensions are you running? For the Norton toolbar to suddenly "disappear" on 2 computers is very odd. Both are using Chrome 54? Both have the same extensions? The toolbar is separate from the actual product so you do not have to uninstall Norton. Just remove the toolbar. Maybe you have an extension that is interfering with the Norton toolbar. Current Chrome is Version 54.0.2840.71 m (64-bit).The last update to the toolbar was September 15,2016.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

You can see in my second post here that I am running the new versions, same as what you just posted.  Everything was updated at the beginning, when I was having problems with the toolbar disappearing (a far too common problem for years according to hundreds of posts by people wanting a fix. Google surprised me with the MANY posts on many forums).  I have tried everything posted here, except for completely removing Chrome and starting over. Guess that will be tomorrows project.  8>(

I had tried removing the toolbar and re-installing it once, I will try that one more time before removing and re-installing Chrome.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

Uninstalling Chrome is not a project. It takes a minute. Be sure to remove the entries in User/ App data for Chrome. Toolbars are not part of the program itself. They are browser add ons. Anyone can add them to their browser even if they are using a different antivirus.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

I just started Internet Explorer on the laptop, and the Norton Toolbar is actually LARGER than the address bar!  So, it is a Chrome issue.

Guess I will be using IE again, until this issue with Chrome can be resolved. I have not tried adding a different toolbar to see if it is only Chrome, or a Norton/Chrome combo.  At least my wife can use IE now and have the Norton toolbar usable.

It is a fantastic laptop (or super book) Dell XPS 13 with touchscreen.  We love it.

I use Lastpass myself. If you right click on it you may get other options. Norton has not updated since 2014 also. I know in Firefox you do not need the toolbar. From what I heard. Lastpass is the #1 password manager.

I am having the same problem with Norton Toolbar and Chrome 54.  However, I am also experiencing the same tiny font and tiny window size with ScreenshotCaptor app.  I have brand new Lenovo 510S.  I think this may be a Windows 10 issue.

Hello nancy1

Since you have brand new computer, did you thoroughly remove any trial version of a security program using the removal tool? Also, please disable Fast Startup.

Thanks.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

It is not a Windows 10 issue, but something between  Win 10, Norton, Chrome, and different computers.

I have the same setups on both my Desktop and Dell laptop, both running Win 10.  The desktop displays the Norton Security Toolbar the same as it always was, the same size as the address bar.  The laptop used to show the same way, but now the toolbar is a very thin, unreadable bar. If I open IE on the laptop, the Norton Security Toolbar is actually WIDER than the address bar.

It is only on that laptop that the NS Toolbar is bad.  So, it is some combination of issues between Norton, Chrome, and the Dell video drivers.  I recently remembered that the Dell had automatically updated some things, probably a video driver problem now.

I have to use IE on the laptop for this reason, but I do not like it nearly as well as Chrome.

I may try to see if I can reload an earlier video driver for the laptop to see if that is an issue.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

Thanks for the advice.  The Lenovo came with trial version of McAfee, but I uninstalled it since I am using Norton.  The two did conflict, I was having freeze up issues until I realized my mistake.  I also did disable fast start-up.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

I may have found a solution albeit not the best one. Another poster made reference to it as a DPI.  My laptop had the same tiny toolbar issue that has been described here. My Laptop also was set up to do the highest res availble and in my case, that was 3840x2160. I reduced that to the more standard 1920x1080 and the toolbar is now visible and useable. I would imagine if you keep reducing the res on your screen, you will arrive at a res that you'll find good for Norton Toolbar.

Hope this helps!

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

As an experiment, I lowered my screen res to 1366x720 and the Norton Toolbar got even larger and easier to read. Kinda sad that we have to compromise between our screen res and using the NTB but it is what it is.. Seems like 1280x720 is the sweet spot on my laptop. (HP Spectre).

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

The problem I have is NOT a DPI issue at all.  It is something between NTB and Dell causing ONLY the NTB to be tiny and unreadable.  If I change the DPI to get the NTB readable, everything else is HUGE, taking up a major part of the screen, and that is unusable.

The problem on my computers is that on two other computers the NTB is similar in width to the address bar, but on the laptop in question the NTB is TINY in comparison.  The RELATIVE size of the NTB on the screen is FAR smaller than on two other computers.  That is absolutely NOT a DPI issue.

I am wondering if anyone here understands RELATIVE size?

Kudos0

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

Understood. Just reporting the results of my experiment. I did note the make of my Laptop in case someone else has a similar laptop. It also provides a baseline for folks to try and get to their own "sweet spot".

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

It solved my issue as my NTB is now both readable and useable.  I did have to go into the settings and reduce the size of the text in Win10. You can take this suggestion or not. Makes no difference to me one way or the other.

Re: Norton Toolbar too small in Google Chrome 54

I have had this same problem with my Lenovo Yoga / Win 10 laptop. Thanks to bjm_ for the clue.  I right clicked on the Chrome icon on the desktop then Properties / Compatibility then checking the "Override high DPI scaling behavior" box then selecting "System" in the drop down box.  On my next restart of Chrome, the Norton Toolbar size was relative to the browser.  Kudos to bjm_. This fixed my problem.
