Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

i just had firefox tell me there is an update for the toolbar/identity safe,3 parts of the update mentions sending information to retail.onlinesbi.

i looked them up and it is the state bank of india which sounds extremely suspicious to me so i cancelled the update.

i've done a quick search and couldn't find anything, any information about what is going on here please ?

EDIT: image added.and looking at it again it might be it that it reads my data if i use that bank online ???

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

I have exactly the same message in Firefox. A Norton Identity Safe update is requesting approval because there are 3 x "Access your data on retail.onlinesbi.com" and 1 x "Access your data on 12 other sites" as is shown in the image step attached. I assume this is correct for this update, but when it comes to the security of my passwords I'm not going to take anything for granted. Would be nice for someone who knows how the plugin works to confirm...i.e someone from Norton.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

thanks for the reply,

that is very weird, you linked to the identity safe add on,it was happening specifically with the toolbar add on.so i went to the identity safe add on and forced it to look for an update,i got the exact same permission request as the picture in my first post.

i also checked when they last updated, security toolbar = 6 july 2017 / identity safe = 2 june 2017.so they aren't that out of date.

perhaps i should report this up to support just to be sure,i expect i'll have to remove and reinstall but i'll leave it as is in case there is a serious issue that they need to look into.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

I have the exact same issue and I have not given permission to update the add-on until I see something here from Norton, never heard of onlinesbi.com. Also I noticed that when I run live update it now always fails only loading 2 of 5 updates.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

anybody from Norton gonna comment on this, this seems very serious to me, that the Identity "Safe" ? program is asking for permission to access State Bank of India and 12 other sites in order to allow the update???

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

i spoke to support on chat earlier to report it,at first he couldn't see the issue since sbi is a safe site until i pointed out that it differs from the official permissions as shown by Krusty13 above,i just said i would do a full system scan and left it at that.

after the scan i had 23 cookies and it claimed to find 2 viruses but they were an old GTA III no-cd crack and a very old firefox downloader so they couldn't be involved.

i decided to go straight to the page for the latest version linked above by Krusty13 and clicked on the install button, this time it did show the correct permissions so i let it install.

now the issue is i don't know if it automatically accepted the other permissions since i have no more updates,i did try installing random add-ons just to see what came up but they were all okay.plus there is no way that i can find to look over previous permissions, the issue is certainly not solved but it looks like i can't do anything else for now.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

Step:

I was thinking of doing just that as well but I can't decide if I should uninstall the old one first, I think I should since it seems to somehow try for the sbi permissions but I wonder if I will lose everything I've already got saved in my vault if I do and I have the same concerns as you not knowing if the new install (or the old) will or has given out permissions to sbi ? Still waiting before I act.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

@freebirdwil

i can understand that but just one thing, you will not lose the things in your vault because they are held in a cloud with firefox, after i did the update i had to sign into my norton account and then use my vault password to sync it back up.so if you do update it make sure you have your norton account password at hand.

again,i don't blame you if you don't until we hear something more official.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

@step Same issue here. I live in germany, not india and don't know if I should install this update or not. As long, as I'm concerned here about this, I'm not gonna to do this update.

I hope very much that we'll gonna see an offical statement, from a norton employee about this here, soon.

LONG POST INCOMING

i've been researching this thing for hours to try and work out what's going on and i think i might have it.

i found a couple of blog posts by a person who makes add ons/extensions:

https://palant.de/2016/07/02/why-mozilla-shouldn-t-copy-chrome-s-permission-prompt-for-extensions

The permission prompt shown above says: “Read and change all your data on the websites you visit.” Can a regular user tell whether that’s a bad thing? In fact, lots of confused users asked why Adblock Plus needed this permission and whether it was spying on them. And we explained that the process of blocking ads is in fact what Chrome describes as changing data on all websites. Also, Adblock Plus could also read data as a side-effect, but it doesn’t do anything like that of course. The latter isn’t because the permission system stops Adblock Plus from doing it, but simply because we are good people.

which leads onto another that looks very familiar to what is happening here:

https://palant.de/2017/08/05/revisiting-permission-prompt-for-firefox-extensions

Two days ago I released a new version of my Google search link fix extension. I finally got to turning that “run on all websites” permission into a list of specific domains, with all of 193 Google domains. And the backlash came immediately, in form of this review (translated from Russian):

please read through to see the images and see the similarity,so here's what i think is happening:

1 - everyone who updates is accepting the permissions for retail.onlinesbi

2 - a lot of people will have the notifications turned off so will not even know.

3 - those who do have it on might not see the same permissions prompt as others.

4 - and finally, the sbi thing is supposed to be there and is safe but we are probably not meant to see it in case something like me starting this topic happens

DISCLAIMER : this is what i THINK is happening, not what i know is happening.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

I have asked if someone from Symantec can comment.  I wouldn't expect to hear anything until after the weekend.

FYI, although I have the ID Safe extension installed I have it disabled and did not see the prompt posted by @step when it updated.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

I got the same alert as the OP when Firefox asked for the same permissions when upgrading.

I deleted the Norton add-on and reinstall from Firefox site. I got a different alert this time.

This new version also is causing problems with some sites with not filling in the Login/password.

These sites were working fine with previous version and they work fine with Edge.

A big step backwards.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

same concerns here. not just that, but also "Input data to the clipboard"? is Norton using the clipboard route to insert saved passwords? and is the indian bank accessing the same clipboard info?

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

In that extension there is an option to copy login/password so you can copy/past that information. It uses the clipboard.

My advice is to delete the updated extension and go to Firefox and download the new extension from there and you will get a different permission notice as per my previous post.

New version 3.0.0.298 is not working very good. People are complaining about not filling in Login information. Had the same problem.

I fixed my system, I deleted the new version 3.0.0.298 and install the older 2.1.0.24 and it is working great.

Would like to know about this as well.  I've blocked the update as I don't see any reason to allow such access.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

late last night i noticed another issue with the update, the safe page icon no longer shows anything except the grey ? with the "this page is untested" next to it,also google searches through firefox no longer gives me the safe search ticks or crosses,i can't click on the three dots on the toolbar to open the options (i mean i can click on it but nothing happens).

i know it is the identity safe add on because last night i deleted it and reinstalled, everything started working again but today it is back to being off.

i only noticed last night so i honestly can't say if it was always like this since the update.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

Kudos to Mohan_G for waking up "the team", meanwhile 2 days later no progress and it looks like everyone is either avoiding the update, or switching back to the old one.  Too bad Mozilla has put such pressure on all the add-on/extension designers before the dreaded annihilation in 57.0 hits and I'm impressed that Norton actually got an update in before it hit but what a shame that we can't get answers on why we must grant permissions to The State Bank of India and even if we do we get an extension that works worse than the one it replaces. Kudos to @STEP for his intense research which is likely a correct deduction but until Norton makes things official and gets it working I guess we all continue on with outdated extensions from the world's greatest software security company.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

Hi everyone,

You may have seen a confusing popup from Firefox mentioning unfamiliar websites during a recent update of our Norton Identity Safe extension.  This popup is normal and expected and your security has not been compromised or degraded.

We’re sorry this update has caused so much confusion.

Here’s what’s going on:

We recently updated our Norton Identity Safe extension for Firefox with improvements for handling logins on several specific sites, including State Bank of India (onlinesbi.com)

When Firefox updates an extension, it looks to see if the update declares any new permissions, and then shows a confirmation message summarizing the changed permissions.

Our recent update triggered this Firefox feature, which listed out the first three website improvements (different pages on onlinesbi.com), then summarized the rest as "12 other sites".

It did this despite the extension already having permission to "access your data for all websites", which was shown when first installing Norton Identity Safe.

We understand the confusion this Firefox feature may have caused by listing unfamiliar websites and want to reassure you that:

  • We do not transmit any of your data to these websites, nor are these websites able to access any password manager data or code.
  • The permission to "access your data" for these sites is all necessary to provide password manager abilities on these pages.

We will look at ways to avoid having to declare specific site permissions as well as work with Firefox to not display these warnings when an extension has already declared permission to "access your data for all websites".

- The Norton Identity Safe Team.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

thanks for the reply and clearing everything up,i'm glad it was as i thought part way through this thread.

also,i don't know if there was a hot fix or it somehow fixed itself but my "green tick" issue i mentioned a few posts up has been working correctly the past couple of days,so hopefully all is well now.

Re: Norton toolbar update today/retail.onlinesbi

What about the Login's that were working with the older version and no longer work with this new version? What is the fix for that? See this thread.

Kudos to Mohan_G for a clear explanation of what our friend, Contributor STEP had previously shared from his research, well done to both of you, still wondering if now is the best time to update as I have not, but everyone I have heard that has says it's worse.???
