Norton toolbar will NOT install (Chrome)

Got a new laptop in the mail yesterday and installed Norton Security & Chrome.  I then installed the Norton toolbar & identity safe.  Everything worked fine.  Wonderful.  I then uninstalled McAfee which somehow removed the Norton toolbar!  When I tried to reinstall the toolbar from identitysafe.norton.com it would not install.  I uninstalled & reinstalled Chrome but the problem remained.  Now I'm thinking I need to uninstall Norton Security.

Has anyone heard of this? Is there another solution?  I can't figure out how uninstalling McAfee caused so much havoc.

Re: Norton toolbar will NOT install (Chrome)

Something does not seem right here. You bought a new laptop which came preinstalled with McAfee. You then installed Norton Security without uninstalling McAfee first? Am I correct? That is a huge mistake. Google Chrome extensions are available in the Chrome store and are entirely separate from Norton Security itself. The havoc was caused cause you did not remove McAfee first. You could have left McAfee on your pc till the 90 day trial ran out also. Be sure to run the McAfee Uninstall tool. Here are links for the Norton Security Chrome extensions. Also if you open up Norton Security and click on the Identity tab you will see your browser add ons. You can turn them on and off. Also under Chrome settings/ extensions you can enable and disable any extension. Not sure how you even got Norton Security installed with McAfee still installed. You did not recieve any wanrings?

Re: Norton toolbar will NOT install (Chrome)

I assumed Norton would prompt me to uninstall McAfee but it never did.    I have tried to configure/add the Norton toolbar from Norton Security but it continually fails to install.   I have about 50 logins (not sure if that's considered a lot) so this is getting frustrating.

I will try those links (I'm on another pc now) but  don't hold out much hope.

I tried all the links and still no luck .  I get a notice that says "Attempted to downgrade extension" when I try to install the toolbar.

Re: Norton toolbar will NOT install (Chrome)

Did you check Norton Security Identity tab? Did you check your Google Chrome extensions list? What 50 logins? Logins from where? You need to complete uninstall McAfee using the uninstall tool I posted. When all else fails then uninstall and reinstall Norton. Please post a screen shot of your currently installed Chrome extensions.

Re: Norton toolbar will NOT install (Chrome)

I did use the McAfee uninstall tool.

Here's what I see when I try to install the Norton toolbar:

Let me restate- I added the Norton toolbar after I had originally installed Norton Security and everything was fine.    When I then went to uninstall McAfee the Norton toolbar was removed from chrome somehow.

I guess I will have to uninstall and reinstall Norton as that seems to be my only option.

Re: Norton toolbar will NOT install (Chrome)

Please post a screen shot of your installed Google Chrome extensions. You can find them under settings/ more tools/ extensions. Click on the 3 dots in the right upper hand corner of Chrome. Also please try installing it from the Google store. Your screen shot is telling me that you already have the toolbar installed. There is a difference between the Norton toolbar and the Norton Security extension. There are the only 2 extensions you will need. Unless you want safe search. I think there is some confusion about the Norton Toolbar and the Norton Security Toolbar. Did you try "resetting" Chrome?

Re: Norton toolbar will NOT install (Chrome)

Hello

If this is a Windows 10 computer, please disable Fast Startup. When you do the various things mentioned,  please restart your computer after each thing you do.

Norton Removal Tool

www.norton.com/nrt

Norton Security link

www.norton.com/latestns for deluxe

www.norton.com/latestnsbu  for premium

Run Live Update until there are  no more updates., restart with no Fast Startup enabled

Run Live Update until there are no more updates again and restart again. Make sure patches are downloaded and installed.

Thanks.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.18.0.213 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

Re: Norton toolbar will NOT install (Chrome)

Everything working fine again after reinstall of Norton Security and Chrome.  It appears that Norton Security automatically installed the two chrome extensions (Norton toolbar & Identity safe) and all that's left to do is enable them in Chrome.   Thanks again.

Re: Norton toolbar will NOT install (Chrome)

I mentioned to your previously about enabling and disabling the extensions. Do you mean Norton Security Toolbar? Not just Norton Toolbar? You most likely had a previous version installed in Chrome. That would explain the "downgrade" extension alert. Glad it is all fixed. Any reason why you installed Norton Security when your new pc came with McAfee? Both have great protection. But you most likely had a 90 day trial you could have used up then uninstalled it and installed Norton Security.

Re: Norton toolbar will NOT install (Chrome)

When I previously checked my extensions I found no Norton products listed.  As mentioned earlier, it appears Norton Security now automatically installs those extensions in Chrome  but they still have to be enabled.  As to McAfee vs Norton- I am already paying for Norton Security so why not use it.  Has McAfee's reputation been boosted by it putting out an improved product?

Re: Norton toolbar will NOT install (Chrome)

Norton Security always did install those extensions. I have installed it on several pc's. McAfee's detection rate is about on par with all other antiviruses. So what you mean is that you had a paid subscription already from your previous pc and transferred that to your new pc. Correct? Once Norton Security is installed and you open up your browser of choice you will be presented with a page from Norton asking you to add the extensions. Uninstall McAfee and replacing it with Norton is a good choice. Just be careful next time and be sure you remove your existing antivirus first before installing a new one.

Yes, I have  had a Norton subscription for years.  Thanks for the advice on pre-installed antivirus software.
