Norton Utilities 16 Defrag: Remove Windows Restore Points? Also Disk clean issue!

Just installed NU16 this morning via Norton offer.  Have AMD Phenom II X6 Core 1055T 2.80GHz Gateway DX 4350 System with 8.00 GB RAM runnning Windows 7 64-bit with Norton Internet Security 20.2.0.19 with Norton Utilities 15 (previously).

While optimizing, ran across message in either Quick or Deep Defrag that Windows Restore points will be removed which may impact other Windows programs. Is there any way to avoid NU16's removing restore points?  Have tried different settings, but to no avail.  Now even fear reinstating automatic Smart Defrag in case I return to find all Windows restore points gone.  Would rather not have NU16 remove restore points than attempting to restore them from backups! Any suggestions for a fix or appropriate settings?

Also, while in NU16 Dashboard, am advised to continue optimizing, first bleaching disk space.  Any attempt, regardless of which drive of four is selected and which selections are checked, only C: main drive is "bleached" only to return to original Dashboard disregard for any bleaching having occurred.

Thanks for any help and I hope y'all aren't having same issues with NU16 installations.

Re: Norton Utilities 16 Defrag: Remove Windows Restore Points? Also Disk clean issue!

Guess I am an ignorant NEWBIE, though I do miss Paul Mace Gold Utilities.

Came back late this evening to continue tweaking my PC with NU16. Finally have managed to Bleach Disks, when I discerned, though NU16 recommended the task be done, the actual utility's default has bleaching off.  Once I slid the slider to green, bleaching proceeded through all disks, abeit it somewhat slowly and with some rebooting. Done, the "Fair" status of my System Health according to NU16 Dashboard switched to "Good" with the gas gauge needle all the way down in the green at the far right, and "No actions recommended at this time.

Thank God for even such minor victories; but a default that is "off" when it is a recommended task?  Sigh ... ignorance is NOT bliss!

As for the NU16 Defrag problem, every effort still notes that Windows restore points will be removed any which way I approached the task, any that I could think of.  Moved out of NU16 to Win7 via Windows Explorer --> Properties --> Tools --> Defragmentation exploration of my C:\ main drive.  The last regularly scheduled drive defragmentation had completed after 9:00 am this morning (before the NU16 installation) and the C:\ drive was currently 1% fragmented (the same C:\ drive NU16 previously recommended for defragmentation.  All other drives (three others) were 0% fragmented per Windows Explorer.

Re-defragmented C:\ Drive in Windows Tools Defragmentation.  After several passes [like the MULTI-Pass of The Fifth Element] fragmentation of the drive was now at 0%, down from the previous 1%.  For now, I will hold off defragging with NU16, so long as it intends to remove Windows Restore Points as it defrags.  Currently, per Win7 Control Panel, all Restore Points are still intact through the last one I had noted earlier this afternoon -- a Critical Update Restore Point back in June -- even after this last Windows defrag late this evening.

Earlier this afternoon, I tried to download an NU16 Product Manual, for more specific details than those rudimentary ones in the Help installation with NU16, but it does not exist, at least not one I could find. Lord willing, the solution/fix will become avaiable for and from the Norton Community.  Currently, I do not plan to worry about it if the system is "Optimized" and I can continue to defrag on a regular schedule via Win7 without removing or potentially losing restore points..

Thanks, good night, and God bless!

Re: Norton Utilities 16 Defrag: Remove Windows Restore Points? Also Disk clean issue!

Had hoped there might be a solution posted already either here on in the couple of other posts regarding this same problem, but have not found a solution yet.  Had already turned off smart defrag, assuring no other defrags are scheduled in Norton Utilities 16.

Guess I will have to try Chat or phone support again, but that was my FIRST response when I could find no solution for  the problem last week. Chatted with a Norton Support rep, who asked me to hold online while I was transferred to the appropriate Norton support tech. About an hour later, the Chat window still indicated I should hold while I was transferred.  When I queried if anyone was there, the Chat message changed to something like: "You are not currently in an online chat with anyone."  Could not hold any longer, so I closed the window, although I was clearly aware that Norton was experiencing longer than usual response times from support techs.

Maybe this time I will be able to reach out to a Norton Support tech who can resolve the problem; I surely would much rather not have Norton Utilities 16 remove my Windows 7 restore points while defragmenting drives.  More later, Lord willing.

Re: Norton Utilities 16 Defrag: Remove Windows Restore Points? Also Disk clean issue!

Hey Tecchas,

Sorry for the late reply regarding your queries. Firstly, what I will say is that there is no fix for NU16 or any third party utility software removing windows restore points. This is by design and it is due to how restore points are stored on the hard drive. The best workaround I suggest is to use Windows Defragment or create a backup of your PC and then perform the Defragment using NU.

As for bleaching was turned off by default because it takes a long time to complete. Bleaching prevents files from being recovered for privacy reasons by writing into the blank space then removing what was written. The more free space you have on your hard drive the longer it will take. The reason why we had this turned off by default was because we had several customers complaining that 1 click optmization or a privacy scan was taking way too long. I recommend that you perform a bleach once a month or less. The other privacy scans such as Clean browser, Clean windows, Clean third party apps doesn't take too long to complete so by default they are swithced on.

Hope this helps answer your queries.

Re: Norton Utilities 16 Defrag: Remove Windows Restore Points? Also Disk clean issue!

Thanks Skreddy.  And yes your response helps, though I had hoped I just had not found the appropriate switch to disallow removing Restore Points.

Will likely use your suggested workaround, though I fear I may likely forget to back up my files - particularly Restore Points - before utilizing NU16 Defrag in the future. Lord willing, this will not happen.

Have used bleaching and 1-Click Optimization on my four drives already, with preferences adjusted for my needs.  Fortunately bleaching or 1-Click Optimization does not take much longer than about 30 minutes.  My main terabyte drive is currently at about 20% capacity. I suspect bleaching will likely take longer once the drive(s) approach full capacity.

Still remember running utility capabilities - some incidents of error-checking and defrag - overnight to minimize my actual wait time on the desktop. Thanks again for your response.

Cordially,

Tecchas

hey Tecchas,

Just a reminder, the bigger the free space on the disk, the longer bleaching will take. When you perform an bleach you need to make sure it is actually turned on with the switch set to 'I' and green via the bleaching page under Privacy.

Cheers,

Re: Norton Utilities 16 Defrag: Remove Windows Restore Points? Also Disk clean issue!

Thanks Skreddy,

Just reviewed my selection under the bleaching page you referenced.  Had just my 120Gig HD selected (with ~60% free space).  As this and two other drives are rarely used now, I opted to deselect & reselect Drive C:, my main terabyte HD.  Next time I bleach will just have to pay attention to how long the process takes - which had been taking a little over half an hour.

Will also continue to regularly bleach my disks, but likely still one at a time unless I opt to go back to doing them all overnight after trying the process at least once during a lazy day when I can watch for any anomalies that may require user intervention.

Thanks again for the advice, had I not checked, I would likely have been perfectly happy thinking all is well with my main drive too!

Merry Christmas!  Hope you and your loved one are enjoying a festive holiday season and are headed for a most prosperous, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Immanuel,

Tecchas

Re: Norton Utilities 16 Defrag: Remove Windows Restore Points? Also Disk clean issue!

Skreddy, Norton utilities 15 never needed to remove the windows restore points in order to perform a disk defragmentation.  You also are not correct about other third party software.  I have used other software to do the defrag and have not had a problem.  How does one turn off Norton being the manager of my disk defragmentation and turn on windows defragmentor?

Also, what happened to the custom deletion of files?  In NU15, under the privacy cleaning options, there was an option to have the tool empty out other folders.

Re: Norton Utilities 16 Defrag: Remove Windows Restore Points? Also Disk clean issue!

Hello Bob,

NU 16 does not necessarily manage your disk defragmentation. It is a component of the product that you can choose not to run. It will however, advise that you will need to run a disk defrag. At that time I would suggest running a Windows Defrag.

To run a windows defrag, you simply right click on the hard drive you wish to run it on > Properties > Tools tab > Select Defragment and follow the prompts.

As for Custom Deletion file could you please elaborate which section you are referrring to? Could you please provide a screenshot if possible?

Skreddy
