Norton Utilities Corrupts my PC

I'm a long-time user of Norton products (currently Norton 360) and until just recently I could not have faulted them. But then I was offered a product called Norton Utilities, and I'm thinking "yeah, why not?", so I purchased it. It corrupted my computer, so I contacted Norton Support. It was like I was living in some alternate reality. I said to the guy, I download your new Norton Utilities and it corrupted my computer. He said "it can't do that". Told me to remove it - I did. Computer works fine.  Asked me to reload it - I did.  Computer corrupted again.  So, I uninstalled it - computer works fine again. So, what do you think his response was?  He said "Norton Utilities can't do that".  So I said, you've got to be kidding, you've just seen it for yourself (he had online access to my computer so was watching all this as it happened).  He said, "it can't do that, so I’ll close this session as problem resolved".  I mean, what the... ?!!!

Re: Norton Utilities Corrupts my PC

Hello Perth User. By say "corrupted your computer" specifically what are you referencing? Most likely a corrupted file system would put the computer into a non-bootable state or could cause a BSOD which would give you an error code to follow-up on. With the product installed have you also taken a look at your power settings and disabled "fast startup", here is the procedure to change that setting. Having fast startup enable can cause software installs to not completely install since it will hold data resident in system memory to boost the reboot process. Let us know if this setting has been turned off and the system rebooted. And whether it makes any difference with your issue.

Cheers

Re: Norton Utilities Corrupts my PC

Sorry, I will be more specific - every time it runs, whether done manually or it pops up on my screen (daily) and does its auto-run thingy, it removes the folders I have pinned to 'Quick access' in my File Explorer (that's annoying), and secondly, it cleans out my Google Chrome so that when I load a web page, all the formatting is gone and it just displays the basic page structure (not sure of the technical term here) and then I have to refresh the page to get it to format/look as it is supposed to look. So for every single web page I have to load it twice. Then the next day when Utilities runs again, every page needs reloading twice again.

Re: Norton Utilities Corrupts my PC

Is this the new subscription based Norton Utilites, NU? If so, have you gone through all the settings and disabled those that could be affecting your observations?

Just accepting the default settings may be too aggressive for your needs.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.
